Easier contact bar feeds
Applications S60 5th EditionQ. Having bought the Nokia 5800, partly for its innovative contact-centric homescreen, I can't believe how hard the contact feeds are to set up. It seems as thought the set-up wizard wants me to look up and type in each feed for each contact by hand, using the on-screen keyboard. Surely there's got to be a better way?
A. Indeed there is. What Nokia has done is tie the 'Contacts bar' homescreen theme into the Web browser, recognising that this is the place you'll discover the right RSS feed addresses for people and sites in the first place. Let's say you want to show a friend's Twitter feed.
- Head to www.twitter.com/{theirname} as usual. If you're shown the 'mobile' view then (temporarily) tap on 'Standard' view, so that the full Twitter layout is shown.
- On the right of the page you can see a link with the person's Twitter RSS feed, but you don't need to tap on it - instead, use 'Options | Subscribe to web feeds' and pick one of the feeds offered (the 'RSS' one is a good start).
- You'll then be shown a list of your 'web feeds', think of this as a list of favourite feeds from around the Internet. Most importantly for the job in hand, this same list will appear in the 'Contacts bar'.
- Back out of Web and switch back to your home screen.
- Tap on the appropriate contact and then on the menu icon (three horizontal lines).
- Tap 'Edit web feeds' and then 'Select feed from a list' - you'll see the same list that you saw just now in Web.
- Pick the one you want (e.g. the Twitter RSS feed just subscribed to) and then tap on 'Done'.
That's it! Tap the refresh icon when you want your 5800 to go online and grab the latest feed entries.
