Hidden transitions

Q. I've got a friend with a Nokia 5800 and his device has all manner of whizzy screen transitions whereas my 5800 doesn't. I can't find a setting for this anywhere, however much I delve into the 5800's menus. Does it depend on where we got our 5800s from?

A. No, although the default setting for transitions might be different for different network operator-supplied devices, of course. The problem is that Nokia has a) called transitions 'Theme effects' and b) hidden them so effectively that you'd never find them if we weren't here to tell you where to look!

Go to 'Settings > Personal > Themes > General'. So far so good, and you've probably already been into this dialog. But tap on 'Options' now and you'll see a whole new setting: 'Theme effects' and you'll be able to turn these 'On'. Back out of Settings and enjoy the new transitions. And no, I've absolutely no idea whatsoever why this vital setting has been obfuscated in this way. Go figure!
