How can I get rid of a 'virus' on my smartphone?

Q. I know, I know, I've been silly and I've accepted what I thought was a game from a friend and now my smartphone is infected with a virus - it keeps trying to go online and send messages out. How can I get rid of it?

A. If it's a piece of 'malware' (malicious software) that's well known, there's a chance that one of the various anti-virus software companies have already produced a removal tool. But don't worry if you can't find anything suitable, as it's quite easy to rebuild your smartphone, without the virus. And in the process you'll gain a unit that's faster and free from rubbish.
