How can I get round 'insufficient memory' on my 9210i?

Q. I’m forever having problems with ‘Insufficient memory’ on my old Nokia 9210i Communicator. Short of selling it and buying something else, isn’t there anything that can be done to help the situation?

A. It’s true that the 9210i is RAM-challenged. After loading the Symbian operating system, most users see only about 3MB free, enough for only Messaging and the normal PIM applications. Trying to run a demanding game or route planning application as well is, as you’ve found out, a frustrating experience. However, there are a few things you can do. Firstly, make sure you’re not running any unnecessary background applications (Active Desk is a particular culprit here). Secondly, load up DevMan, a background utility that will help more than it hinders, in that you can set it to ‘auto-compress’ your RAM every hour, or when the case is opened. Finally, if you do run up any memory-hungry games or applications, try to remember to close them as soon as you’re finished with them.
