PC Suite doesn't recognise my Nokia Communicator
Troubleshooting, Communications Series 60, Series 80, Series 90Q. I've been unable to connect up my Nokia 9500 for the last two months. I've powered everything down and restarted, I've tried reinstalling the latest PC Suite, I've used both cable and Bluetooth and nothing seems to work. The Windows hardware wizard pops up and asks me for the driver and, despite a broadband Internet connection and the original Nokia CD in the drive, nothing gets found. Why's this happening and what can I do to solve the problem?
A. It sounds as though the vital hardware drivers for the smartphone have somehow been lost in your Windows installation. This isn't unknown, as hard disks lose data occasionally (which is why we do backups) and Windows itself isn't 100% stable. Curiously, the main PC Suite download doesn't include these vital drivers and Nokia's web site doesn't seem to have them either. The solution is to go back to the CD that came with your 9500 and look in the 'Materials\Software\PC Suite' folder. Run the file 'Connectivity_Cable_Driver_EA.exe' and, after acknowledging a few 'OK's, you should be back in business, with your 9500 (and any other compatible devices) solidly connected again.
The morals of all this are a) computers aren't infallible(!) and b) always keep the original CD that comes with each device; you can't always find everything on the Web.
