Remarkably Resilient Nokia Messaging

Q. I have purchased a Nokia Eseries phone and am generally very happy with it. However, its headline feature, Nokia Messaging built-in, is proving a real pain since it continually pops up messages asking for an access point, and insists on checking for email, EVEN WHEN I'VE EXPLICITLY EXITED MESSAGING! Please save me from Nokia Messaging hell!

A. Nokia Messaging is integrated quite closely into S60 on the latest Eseries phones, as you've found, and presumably also on future devices, with the result that it's never really 'off'. However, it's really easy to stop it trying to pick up email all the time (the default setting!). Go into 'Email>Settings>[mailbox name]>Account settings>When to synchronize'. You can then turn off timed synchronization or otherwise severely restrict the sync hours.

We agree the default here is a bit silly and now you know how to customise Nokia Messaging's email addiction for yourself!
