Why does my P910i keep changing its IMEI code?

Q. I've been using a P910i for the last three months, but I'm having trouble registering applications. For starters, the IMEI reported by most (but not all) applications (starting with "14") is different from that printed on the phone itself (starting with "35"). Then, when I try and sort the problem out by resetting the unit, the reported IMEI changes and I have to request new registration codes for all my third party programs. What's going on?

A. You've hit a known problem with P910i units with early firmware, in which any reset or firmware upgrade advanced a special software IMEI. Unfortunately, many application developers look at this number and not the one reported by the official 'Mobinfo' API , which leads to problems. The only known solution is to use a tool such as PC File Manager, restarting the phone while attached and using the utility to delete the file 'C:\System\plpvar.ini' before you enter your SIM card PIN. This rigmarole is needed because you can't delete this file once Symbian OS is up and running, by the way, because it's always kept 'locked'.
