Why has my P900 stopped talking to my Windows PC?

Q. My Sony Ericsson P900 has stopped talking to my Windows XP PC, the system tray icon remains resolutely flat and ‘Link Properties’ just says that USB is ‘Not Connected’. What can I do to track down the problem?

A. Here’s what to do, in approximate likelihood of solving the problem:

  1. Remove and reseat the P900 in its cradle.
  2. In ‘Link Properties’, try unchecking the USB box, waiting ten seconds and then re-enabling it. Wait up to a minute and see if the link comes back to life.
  3. Power the P900 off and power it back on again, to clear any miscreant processes that might have been blocking the link. Try the P900 in the cradle again.
  4. Along similar lines, power your PC off and on again, to clear any temporary confusion.
  5. As a last resort, try re-installing PC Suite, as some other program on your PC may have interfered with a critical file.
