Why is searching so slow in Contacts?

Q. My Nokia 9500 has become almost unusable since I synchronised in my 700 or so contacts from Outlook. When I search for a name in Contacts, matches take over six seconds to appear!

A. By default, the 9500 Contacts store is indexed by Last name, First name, Company name and Email address. Which means that, out of the box, it will look for search clues in just these fields but it will bring up matches very quickly (around a second), even with many hundreds of contacts. What's happened is that you've altered something in 'Contacts' 'Tools' 'Settings' 'Advanced search'. By default these are all set to 'No', changing any of them to 'Yes' means that Contacts can't use its nice, fast index and has to search through every entry in full. If you need to search in one of these extra fields (e.g. 'Note'), then by all means set as many as you want to 'Yes'. But you will incur the six second wait each time, so it might be better to leave all fields as 'No' and just turn them to 'Yes' when actually needed.
