How to connect laptop to internet using gprs?

12 replies · 13,104 views · Started 14 April 2003

yes, using Nokia's modem software. (on the CD which came with the phone, or downloadable from nokia.com)

Or, use a web browser like Doris or Webviewer, if you dont need to see internet on your laptop, this is a good option, since both programs reduce the data traffic (hence cost)

Was just going to ask that! 😃
thx paul, so this works also on IR i suppose?
one more thing, how fast is the 7650's modem?

Thx again...

It depends on your opperator.
It can go up to 42kbps I think

Is internet over gprs access affordable in your country?Internet access produces much greater data traffic than wap access, and my network at least, has a higher charge per kb for internet access. So be careful, unless cost is not a matter for you.

Be Careful. If you don't have free GPRS access this is not a good option. Rather get a modem for your laptop, much cheaper.

Thx MemphisX...

@gs, well since there are only two operators in my country, it's kind of pricy, they currently have 3 packages:

30MB for 20$ per month and 1$ for any extra MB
65MB for 40$ per month and 1.2$ for eny extra MB
100MB for 60$ per month and 1.3$ for any extra MB...

Deathmonger u r right, that would be a subject for another thread, but people should be warned about it so they can decide what is in their best interest.Doc,i totally agree with u.Web surfing via gprs is not a very good option, for heavy users at least.Better get a modem.Jamps,i would say that gprs in your country is a lot cheaper than in mine. Here, vodafone(greece) offers two options.Vodafone live, with internet over gprs at 5 euros per Mb.And vodafone live plus where you pay 15euros a month and you get 10 Mb free and 1,5 euros for every extra Mb.If they want urers to consider gprs as an alternative way as an alternative way to surf the net,a generous price reduction is needed.

Then there's T-Mobile in the UK, 2p / Kb = 20 / Mb for pay as you go
or
Pay 20 for a 10Mb bundle (2 / Mb) then 2p / Kb after that 11Mb = 40!!!

That is over 12,000 for 600 Mb of data!

Shocking

Bob

sign of the times...

the operators cannot rely on growth via new subscribers, since the market is approaching saturation, so their (each and every one of them) strategy is now to increase average revenue per user (ARPU). That means MMS instead of SMS, video, online gaming etc etc. The common thread to all of this is data.

They know very well what they are doing! If you want to browse or view emails with the phone, the only affordable way is to buy blocks of data. It's surprising just how stable usage can be.

Over 4 months, my consumption has been between 16-18MB/month. Over here (Spain) Movistar sells at 30 for 20MB. Happy about it? No, but what's the alternative :-?

Paul

None,i'm afraid. But how are they going to increase data traffic and subsequently ARPU with charges that high?I'm afraid 3G is doomed to failure, unless networks prepare their customers for future services. And the only way they can do that is through price reduction so everyone will become familiar with services like gprs,MMS etc.And i'm talking about the avg. mobile phone user, not just professionals or technophiles.
