I don't know why, but recently I'm getting a flashing yellow exclamation mark telling me to switch the phone off.
Well, it doesn't want to switch off, so I end up having to take the battery out the back - which sucks!
The weird thing is - it only happens when I've been travelling on the tube and get off. I take it out of my pocket and mr yellow sign greets me!!
Anyone else having this problem?
I don't know about p800 but i remember on a friends t68i that it had many problems (mostly hang ups) when there was no signal. So maybe the same goes for p800. It doesn't like low/no signal!
Well.... so I guess the phone will crash when I put it on flight mode as well?
I'll be really cheesed-off if that is the reason!!!
I just always figured that I had accidentally pressed some buttons while the phone was in the carry case on my belt. The lack of signal does make some sense.
I am having the same issues.. Coincidently they do happen when I'm at low or no signal.. I think a firmware update maybe necessary to fix this problem. I am sending my phone out for upgrades on Monday and plan on notifiying the tech of this issue.
When there is on signal the phone uses to much battery to to ping the network, so the excess usage of battery (and maybe cpu) makes it have problems. But when it is in flight mode this does not occur because it stops being a phone and have any communication with any network...

What the cute little animation is trying to tell you is to hold down the power button for 10 seconds, no need to remove the battery.
Anyway, this happens when the system crashes. This may be caused by some bad software you have installed, if you give the P800 to many tasks at the same time for it to handle, to many programs running in the background, or a corrupt file(s) etc etc...
I think it is very important to think of the P800 as a small PC, and treat it there after. So to prevent the system from crashing it is a good idea to close applications you are not using, be careful with what software you install(use the mem stick) and don't try to force it in any way.
It's not to big of a deal if it crashes, you won't loose any data(Symbian is excellent that way), a reboot should make everything normal again. But if the System crashes frequently you might have a corrupt file in your system, and this will be fixed by doing a format.
It's also a good idea to do frequently backups, so if something bad should happen and a format is needed, you'll always have a updated backup at hand.
I didn't use to have it ...
... since two days I paired a HBH-60 with it and had it 5 times!
I also had some incompatibilities between HandyDay and QuickLaunch that made me uninstall QuickLaunch and left HandyDay without automatic startup, so it could be a general f***up.
I don't care too much as I'm planning to upgrade to R2D in the next few days (as soon as I find time to confirm that it's available at my service station here in Switzerland).
😮
Thanks guys, it does makes sense.
I'm sure SE will be able to fix this with a firmware upgrade... followed by a software upgrade for the crappy 1.3.1 pc suite!

push and hold the power button for 10 seconds, it should go off 😊
I used to encounter the same problem when i purchased my fone several months back. After i upgraded it to R1D, the problem seems to have lessened. Now I only experience it once every two weeks or less. With the new R2D upgrade out, I believe it just might solve the problem completely. 😊

No it won't. It might increase the performance and thereby reduse the chanses of system crashes, but no OS is perfect and the system can always crash/hang up.
You need to understand that this error screen poping up, is actually more of a feature, allowing you to do a soft reset preventing any harm to affect the system. I only wish the P800 also had some sort of a hard reset, allowing it to be formated without having to turn it on, so if something were to go very wrong and it wouldn't reboot, one would still be able to do a format.
It is infact a small computer we are dealing with here people, not just a simple cell phone.
i have been having this exclamation marks problem from day 1 till now,and after upgrading to R1D, the problem still exists, strange though as it happens to me in the middle of me texting a message and it suddenly crash  ...any SE developers out there that can fix this bug? :x

Too true.
At least the P800 actually handles most crashes in an elegant way, rather than PalmOS which tended to write crap over the screen and flicker at you... or maybe the P800 will do that if you crash it in the "right" way?
well as usual Raven lands on the key solution to many problems with the p800..."treat it like a small PC". So far my experience has been that my p800 behaves/misbehaves much more similar to my IPAQ or my PSION from years gone by. With both of theses, as well as all the PC's I have owned it is important to keep track of what you have installed, make sure you do consistent back-ups and reboot whenever you get a chance. With the file manager utility it is very easy to make sure there are not too many processes running at once on your p800....use it frequently. Before I took the "hey this is just a small pc" approach I used to get the exclaimation screen quite often....now I never get it and I am still running on R1B (not that easy to get flash update in Canada yet).
:P
Raven, I think I get your point that 'the p800 is a small pc''... Did I mention that you can make phone calls with it as well?
I'd rather treat my p800 as the Rolls-Royce of mobiles and a poor man's PDA! Never had a phone with such good reception and voice clarity!!
*By the way, what are you folks drinking and smoking over there in Norway?
The new firmware certainly doesn't stop the crashes completely
I got a crash within about 10 mins of booting my phone up after getting it back with the upgrade - of course, it was behaving slow and laggy at the time whilst it got itself sorted. It's been fine since, and I've been heavily using it trying to find all the stuff S.E. changed.
The PC analogy is definately right in my view - don't forget Handy Day has a pretty good task manager as well as File Manager and I find it easier to get to.

Eh? Uhm, having a beer right now...
😃
Had a bbq and a few beers myself yesterday, lovely weather in London!
Unfortunately the weather is crap today...
Had my first 'yellow triangle' moment yesterday, having had the phone for a fortnight. Thing is, I can't figure out why :-? I've been careful to shut down unnecessary programs, and all I'd done with it was take a photo and attach it to an entry in contacts.
Annoyingly it crashed when I was just about to demonstrate it to someone - not as impressive as I could've hoped for!
To save your phone from crashing and to save your battery always "exit" all non-SE programs when you are done from them...
12planet 1.01 caused 5 crashes that I know of on my phone.
i just installed 1.5 and I'll check if it's more stable.
I had only a couple of crashes (flashing exclamation mark) in the first 2 months of owership, then a couple of weeks ago, I started to get a crash every day, sometimes more than one a day... I thought, either my P800 doesn't like April (I know the feeling!) or something has changed.
I hadn't installed any new software, and was puzzled until I did my weekly backup. The backup reported a file as being corrupt and un-readable. I skipped it as part of the backup, did a master reset and restored the backup. One of my e-mail accounts was missing but other than that everything was fine. I re-entered the details of the e-mail account (couldn't be bothered to get it from an earlier backup, if wasn't that important) and it has been crash free ever since (2 weeks and counting) with heavy use every day.
Moral of the story, if you start to get increasing numbers of crashes, do a backup and check for corrupt files. My problem was excerbated becuase I had that email account set up to send/receive on an hourly schedule, so every hour it was probably coming across the corrupt file!
😮
You would think if someone release a product nowadays, it would be properly tested and working without any problems, but sad to say, I can't remember the last product that worked 'right out of the box'.
I mean, with all the tools and technology available, you would thought it would just be perfect?
Really, you would? 😮
The P800 has gone through extensive testing for more than a year before it was released. The UIQ platform is brand new, Symbian 7 is brand new. No other device on the market has this much features in such a small package. Do you think this kind of technology is easy?
How many years have computers existed? -They should be perfect by now, right? -Are they? -No.
What about PDA's, is Win Ce perfect? What about Palm OS 5, perfect? -No.
I think SE has done a hell of a good job with the P800! And I'm not one of those people who was impressed with their T68i mobile phone...
Nothing in this world is perfect, certainly not technology, but it's getting better.. And I believe Symbian is the way to go as far as smartphones and phone-PDA hybrids are concerned! 😃
Raven, I totally agree. For a first attempt at a smartphone the P800 is excellent, and then some.
A minor quibble I have is this; when the phone crashes, is would be nice if you could see some kind of message to indicate why it crashed. Most owners could ignore this message if they weren't interested, but it might help us identify the file/app, etc. that caused the crash.
Other than that, I am very happy with my P800. And I speak as a gadget lover of many years.
From memory, I am not sure that the ARM chipset actually has that many exceptions -- the memory architecture and instruction set are nowehere near as elegant [read: complicated] as PCs or Macs.
Based on this, there is probably little useful information about what actually went wrong, although you could possibly do some useful coding to guess at which application was running based on the stack contents.
The simplest and most useful change to the Pling of Peril* would be to add a message indicating "Your phone neets restarting".
Of, course this would require having a language lookup...
* ["Pling" being the old Unix term for Exclamation Mark]
With the file manager utility it is very easy to make sure there are not too many processes running at once on your p800...
Are you talking about an external application or the actual Storage Manager that comes with the smartphone? Because I can't really seem to understand what is running in the background... It seems to me they all close when you go somewhere else...

I have to disagree. I am on this page today because I did a search after I got my first yellow exclamation mark (3 days after buying this phone) today, while the phone was in flight mode. I got it three times within 5 minutes of playing the car game that came with the phone's CD. After that I gave up on that game, but since it is an Ericsson game I thought it was pretty fucked up that the phone would crash with THAT application.
