I also heard a report that studies into using mobiles at petrol stations failed to show any evidense that mobiles could cause explosions. Maybe one day we will be able to use them in flight and while filling up.
On another note, YMCA in Australia (Vic) have just banned the use of mobile phones in the change rooms of all their swimming pools/gyms for fear someone will take nudy pictures of people getting changed! They didn't ban cameras (or even devices with camera attached) but mobile phones!
Presumably if anyone tried taking photographs with a camera in a changing room they would get a slapping PDQ.
The drawback to modern phones is that most people don't know which ones have a built-in camera. There are a lot of photos up Japanese girls skirts on the net (or so I am told), you can bet these weren't taken with a large Hasselblad studio camera.
I have read that SAS Scandinavian Airlines are happy to allow you to use the phone in Flight Mode. Perhaps Ericsson have met with them, also being a Scandianavian company?
From memory, there was an incident on a British Airways flight that meant the pilot lost control of the plane due to a cell phone being used on-board. Plane controls, as I understand it, in modern planes are based on radio transmissions rather than the old-fashioned bits of string connecting the cockpit to the tail-fin etc. That's why airlines don't like cell phones.
Some airlines go to extremes and ban all machines with lasers in them (eg CD players) but as far as I am aware, that is an unnecessary precaution.
As to the 'flight only' issue: I use my P800 with the flip off and have flown a number of times without any problems. More important thing to remember is to ensure you have a head set plugged in before playing MP3s, games etc otherwise you annoy the other passengers and alert flight attendants that you have a box of tricks in your hand 😉

Graeme - bit of a fly by wire-less you are talking about ther then :P Hmmm?
As you say, flip off and off you go - that was mu conclusinon too.
D
If you use a phone on a flight (and dont get thrown off) you would have to wonder how many cell sites you would register to at the same time, what with the plane being so high off the ground, hopefully! (Unless its Easyjet, as they all seem to be permanently grounded and crap (can i say crap on here???) 😮ops:
I've recently had a couple of good experiences with my P800 & flight mode:
One on EasyJet I decided to let the cabin attendant know in advance, what I was up to, only to find out that the P800 is all the rage with (at least that flight crew) He was more interested to see if I had any goodies on my phone that in my telling him I was going to be using flight mode.
My second experiance (With My Travel), I decided to be a bit more subversive. I use the Expansys Leather Chairmans Case & took the flap off. This 'disguised' the phone sufficiently so that even my neighbour on the flight assumed it was JUST a PDA. (The Cabin Staff on that flight looked so dim that explaining 'flight mode' to them would have been a painful experiance to probably be refused becuase I lost them 1/2 way though)
Ben
I think flight attendants nowadays are becoming more and more aware that our P800 have flight mode. I recently took two commercial flights, one domestic and one international. On both instances, the crew simply asked me if i had my fone on flight mode, which i answered in the affirmative. Then they left me be. Its quite a relief. Unlike few months back whrein i have to inform flight crews each time i meet one about the flight mode on my fone. And then back then some of them would still allow me to use my fone even in flight mode
On the flight back from Jersey (Channel Is) on Saturday, there were three of us with P800's and 2 with XDAs.
The other 12 or so were old people and therefore didn't have phones. 😮
During the hour long flight, the P800'ers mainly tried to figure out how to get BT working whilst staying in Flight mode, so we could play games!
During the same period the XDA's found they ran out of battery 😃

The Flight Mode prevents ALL radio transmissions ie GSM, IR and Bluetooth from working. It even says so when you press the power button with the flip open (if you have the 'ask for Flight Mode' option turned on)!
Agreed. We all knew this, but actually couldn't figure out if there was a sane reason why... BT works on a totally different set of frequencies that, as far as we can figure out, shouldn't interfere with other kit -- mainly because it doesn't bundle everything into packets as GSM does.
The conclusion was that BT got turned off simply because of a general fear of any radio transmission. Anyone know different?

Nope, that's my understanding of it. They work on "Guilty until proven innocent" nowadays. If someone can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that a device that can transmit radio signals won't interfere with anything on board any aircraft in any situation, then they'll let it go.
Besides, from the airlines point of view, how do you train all of your staff to identify all possible devices, what mode they're in and what that measn in terms of radio transmissions?
Hmm. That plane flew on to Isle of Man after London...
Which seat were you in Bassey? 😃

If it was the Flybe London City flight, been on it loads of times, but not recently.
