I was having a look round the data in my 7650, and found this file weighing in at 116kb.

I haven't been able to get it to my PC, so I cannot see what it contains - anybody know? Is it safe to delete it?

Paul

Not sure what it is, but the same file is only 3.6kb on my 7650. It's one of those rouge files that you're never sure about and dare not delete. I suppose i'll leave mine at only 3.6kb, at least until i'm told its safe to delete it, but 116 is pretty hefty for you mate! 😞

Lee

Yep, I could cope with it being 3.6kb, but for example 116kb is a quality app like the video recorder (compressed)...

That said, I prefer a phone working to 98% of its capacity to one which may not boot up 😃 so I'll be letting sleeping dogs lie for the time being.

Paul

I think I found the same file backed up on the PC, could well be the contacts file, since as well as a load of hieroglyphics there were a lot of references to SIM (my contact file is 112kb according to the app manager, and 116kb is the size of cbs2.dat)

@ Lee, how big is your contacts file?

My contacts weigh in at 111kb. I have loads of thumbnail pics attached if that makes a difference.

Lee

14kb in my phone. And since it varies from user to user it could very well be the contacts file as paul wrote. As far as paul's first question is concerned,it seems that everyone's phone has this file.

Thanks Lee, deathmonger, @gr for looking into this. I wonder why my file is so much bigger than everybody else's 😮

Anyway it'll be staying there until we can work out its purpose in life...

NO, it's not. The contacts database is stored in:
C:\SYSTEM\DATA\Contacts.cdb

Maybe its like a HASH TABLE or something like that.
Contacts.cdb = 203Kb
cbs2.dat = 11kb

Any ideas?

I just checked this file once more using fexplorer, and here's an update. It went from 14 kb to 15,2,modified:29/04/2003.When i try to open it i get an unknown file format message.

Whoa! I deleted this file last month, my 7650 didn't like it, i lost all ability to enter text in ALL apps. had to blag a new handset off 121. be warned!

It seems then that it is a very important file.In any case, no matter what it's purpose may be,we are better off not messing with it. deleting it,is ofcourse out of the question.

Thanks Matt69 for sharing your experience - looks like that file has got to stay where it is. Shame it's getting so big tho 😞

This must be one of those files that grow and grow with use, which is why the phone magically has so much space after a hard reset. A bit like the "reserve.bin" file. Oh well...

Paul

Good thing you asked on here before just going ahead and deleting it Paul! 😊

Well, you could always go into your local NSC and explain the problem...I'm sure they'll know exactly what they're doing as always 😉

Better still, go into a High Street Electronics retailer (Dixons etc in UK) and ask them. You'll probably get a reply like "a dot what file? Would you like to buy an Xbox" 😃

Lee

Thanx very much user0815, you're a star. i wouldn't have found that in a long time.

BTW, any ideas on why the phone takes several seconds to open sms messages (with a white screen)? I cannot be sure, but it didn't happen while on f/w 3.16, but now I0m on 4.39 (happens even with an empty register)

Paul

Hi Paul,

does it take so long only if you open a new SMS or also if you open an existing message from your Inbox? In the former case it also sometimes takes a couple of seconds on my phone, depending on what needs to be opened to process the SMS (message application, maybe program manager if it's a SIS or Jar, etc). I have 4.39 as well. If you are in Inbox, it should take less than a second.

you're right! it takes a couple of seconds to open up the inbox of the Nokia messaging application (if a sms arrives with the inbox already open, it opens immediately). But I don't remember it always taking so long. The only messaging related app I have is active mail, but uninstalling it does not speed it up.

Paul

Hmm - it's slow on our 3.16 7650
But fast on my 1.34 3650

Could there be a log file of some kind which gradually builds and makes it slow - or could it depend on the amount of sms's already in your inbox - mine is always keeped clean, but the 7650 is pretty full with all kinds of shite.

Just a guess??

I can't delete the inbox on the 7650 just now as the sms's are needed - but when I get a chance I'll give it a go.

Will

dunno will, both the call/gprs etc log and all messaging logs are empty on my 7650, and it still takes time to open...
