Just got the "Your symbian" newsletter and it had the worst P800 review!
It was written by someone who obviously loves his Nokia 9210 and I don't think it was very fair.
What did you think about it?

😮
At the end of the day, the only thing that's important, is what you think.
What I think? There is no phone (period!) on the market that can compare/compete with the P800 right now....
The title 'The world's most comprehensive phone' still belong to P800
It was an interesting review for sure. I don't agree with all of it.. Everyone of course has a right of reply. 😊
Rafe
you certainly have to wonder about the relevance of reviewing a smartphone which doesn't even have a working SIM card in it..
The beauty of the p800 is the integration which was deliberately left out..
Very strange - Im not sure what the point of this was; I know my p800 will always have it's SIM card in it.....
😃 I just LOVE my P800!!! no matter what...
simply because:
1. its lighter than my BRICK phone...
2. smaller than my BRICK phone...
You can never believe critics...
just look at the film world, and very many of the highest grossing films of the last few years have been slated by the "professional" reviewers.
There is probably a very good and deep-seated reason for this, involving over exposure to the medium, the need to be seen as "independent", taking too many drugs etc., but I still think that your average critic in any area is largely being paid to talk out of their bottom, and does so profusely.
Just call me "Mr Cynical" 😃
Like Rafe said,it was an interesting review and i didnt agree with all of it.
It seems to me that Ewan was comparing it with the 92XX series.
I dont think there is a ground for comparison there,92XX series devices are PDA's with phone capabilites and the p800 is a smartphone with some PDA capabilities.
I still consider the P800 to be the coolest Phone/PDA combo out there 😊
Hi guys,
I did the review (even says so) it looks like you all missed the point.
The review was ONLY of the PDA part of the phone- I *know* it's capable as a net machine, browser, email, etc, but the fact is the majority of the public who will use us (ie not us power users) will use the core PDA apps more than anything.
And in my mind, that side is only average - and it was only this side I was looking. It's no good saying a car has excellent tyres if the suspension is not good... and you can;t say the Palm800 is an excellent SmartPhone if the Smart side of it detracts from the Phone side.

i think u are contradicting yourself, the majority of the public will use the p800 mainly as a phone and it is the power users who will use the core pda apps to its fullest functionality, joe public will probably not know how to check what firmware version he has let alone figure out how to synchronise his calendar and contacts
I own the 9210i and I own the P800 since a few days.
Forget about the 9210i. 😊 The only thing I miss on the P800 is the fax function of the 9210i but I can live with that as I get more and more eMails and less faxes.
I love the size of the P800 and I love the touch screen.
For me, the P800 is the perfect tool. 😊
:-?
The only thing I miss on the P800, is the ability to edit documents and spreadsheets!! When it gets that functionality, I'll call it my MC Hammer phone - You can't Touch This!
Spreedsheet program is currently under development.
You can read about it here: http://www.symbiandiaries.com
I have to say that i do agree with Ewan about the PDA side not beeing that great, but its good enough, and the combination of a Smarphone and PDA,resulting in the p800 is Excelent.
Once again guys,the p800 is a Smartphone.
Once again GhostDog that is just your opinion.
No Raven,its the general opinion,the p800 is promoted as a smartphone,not a PDA.
I dont want to get in to the same discussion again,i like the p800 but only difference bitween the p800 and Smarphones like the SX1 is in the touch screen that is it(SX1 has a 65K color screen).
So if the definition of a PDA is a device with touchscreen, then you are right.
I don't want to get in the same argument again either. I would just like to point out that before you've actually used the P800 as a PDA for some time and gotten used to the interface, you really don't know what you're talking about.
And one of the strong points the P800 has, is infact the things that require a SIM card. I don't wan't to put down Ewan's review because he is entitled to his opinion, and for a person using only a 9210 for a long period of time, his experience is understandable. But as I see it, a 9210 is not a modern day PDA because people require more and more internet access on the go these days, MP3 music etc.. which is infact one of those strong points of the P800, and devices like the 92xx doesn't handle that well.
Using, understanding and appreciating the power of the P800 does, IMO, require the use of a working, GPRS enabled SIM card.
If you just need a full-blown basic PDA, get one of those old non-coloured screen ones then, they will handle those things better then a P800. Does that mean that the P800 is crappy PDA? -No, it simply means that the P800 is a PDA among many other things.
The PDA side of the P800 is good enough for me and many others.
I was actually without a computer for a week, on which I had to rely mostly on my P800, for long e-mails with attachments and alot of web access(using GPRS), which it handles really really well.
One thing I miss is a full QWERTY keyboard, but I'm sure a foldable one will be available soon, through IR or otherwise.
So you see, the P800 is a phone, a PDA, a multimedia device all very well integrated in one small package.
Needles to say I'm a very happy P800 owner. I've had it for more than 4 months now and never has it let me down. It does take some time to really get used to/understand this device, and before you do, you can't really use all it's functions to the fullest. 😊
Phew...sorry about the longish post, I'll stop rambling now.
Cheers
Good to see we've got such passionate P800 owners..... 😃
Hehe.. Yeah. 😃
One more thing about the review, I also think it's important not to just look at what it's like just out of the box, but also take into consideration all the 3'rd party programs that help improve the PDA side of the unit.
I mean, what kind of PDA functionality would the Series 60 device have if it wasn't for all the 3'rd party apps?! 😮 😊
A friend of mine was showing me his Clie this morning at InfoSec (security trade fair in London) and it's pretty nice. The camera worked better than on the P800 and it swivels round.
However, he needed a separate phone and connecting the two together involved a fair bit of faffing about. It's also much wider than my P800.
Clearly there are horses for courses, but the thing I like about my P800 is that it is a phone, PDA, GameBoy, video player, MP3 player, ebook reader, web browser (blah blah blah, I could go on) and I can play Doom on it (how cool is that? this is the killer - albeit silly - feature that I always show people).
It's probably not the best device at any of these functions, but they all work and I always have it with me.
It's the best gadget I've ever owned and, like all of you, I love a good gadget 😃.
And once again Raven,we seem to agree 99%.
I did say that p800's PDA side is not awesome but its good enough, and for me it is the best thing out there, that is why i'm geting one.
The 1% we dont agree about is whether the p800 is a smartphone, pda or a microwave 😊
LOL 😃
As soon as I get my 128MB Duo, I'm gonna start watching movies and listen to some tasty mp3s on my puppy!! I downloaded the 14MB mp4 episode of Friends from another link - and it looks and sounds really good on my P800!!
Okay, I must admit, I think Friends suck big time, but, hey, the opportunities are endless. And yes, I've already lined up a Top20 mp3 list to go on mr memory stick once it arrives.... :bday:
While I am grateful to Raven for putting these videos up, I'd never seen Friends before (I don't really watch television at all) I shan't be seeing it again.
More Simpsons, on the other hand, would be most welcome.
I was impressed with how well it worked (not in full screen mode though). When I got my P800 I was given a free Spiderman DVD. I haven't watched it yet so if I can get it together to encode it I might watch it on my phone first just for the hell of it.
😮
Hoh!! Hold your horses there, I don't think they've got 256MB & 512MB memory stick duos yet....
Well, they've got 128 MB ones, and i'm preety sure that you can encode a movie with descent quality in a lot less then 128 MB.
Yep, 70-80MB should be sufficient for a full 90min movie... 😛opcorn:
You can always get it down to 50-60MB too, but it won't be very "watchable", especially not those action scenes...
p800 speakerphone is suck. it is soft and worst of all is the voice sometimes being lost or intermittently when use speakerphone. so how could it be a great phone if it cannot be used conveniently and eddectively for example in cionference calls? and how could it be a good phone-pda combo if we cannot use the speakerphone while browsing infomation on the screen? this is the worst flaw of p800. i just wonder ericsson will eventually admit it and, if possible, has software patched to cure this deadly decease.
Hey, Raven, I've got a shortcut to your files and will be waiting for your 'movie' section.... 😃
ewan,
It's a strange way to do a review. It's like taking a sports car that has lots of features and options, and then use it in first gear only and with the air conditioner off - because most people would use it that way.
The P800 is a smartphone, not a PDA, an MP3 player or a word processor.
You have to review it in this context, not only the PDA aspects of it. If we wanted a PDA, there are much better PDAs out there.
However, there are no other smartphones of this caliber. I mean one that covers both PDA, phone functionality and general computing (read: games) like this unit.
Covering just the PDA aspect is like doing a review of a computer by looking only at the harddrive and not paying attention to anything else.
I think most people will not use this unit as a PDA primarily, but as a phone, a PDA, a games platform and a utility service (for stock ratings, currency conversion, custom apps, checking email, etc).
I think 99% of people use it for web browsing using GPRS and Opera. The web browser is one of the reasons I got this phone vs. others, but it wasn't even reviewed...
It is apparent that you like the 9210. But, I believe that if you run a pole on P800 users, they'd tell you they hated the 9210's design and the P800 is much better suited for their requirements.
