The kits for re-flashing a 6210, can be had for as little as 5 on ebay. They are adaptaions of the vastly more expensive dejan box, nokbox etc.

The 6210 is based on Nokia's DCT-3 hardware platform. The Nokia 8210 however is DCT-4 and so cannot be re-flashed without VERY expensive equipment. The 9210 is a cross between the two and as such is almost impossibleto reflash. The only piece of hardware which will do costs in the region of 5,000. An adapted DCT-3 cable (6210) won't do the job*.

* Unless somebody works out how to stop the phone from booting when a bettery pack is connected, as discussed in a previous thread.

The 8210 is a DCT-3 phone, not DCT-4. Only the 8310 and some later models are DCT-4. The 9210 has its phone module based on the 6210, and is generally regarded as being a DCT-3 phone.

In the previous thread about flashing the 9210, I did mention that a change of resistor in the battery should do the trick, at least according to the service manual! That's also how the Nokia service centres flash the phones, with a service battery (or a jig, if the phone also needs major repairs).

No one (on this forum, at least) appears to have butchered their massively expensive batteries yet....would you like to be the first? User posted image[ This Message was edited by AAY on 2002-06-14 0919 ]

Hi,

I am new to Nokia phones but what for is it important to be able to reflash your phone?

And if I may ask the question. What means DCT-3 or DCT-4 platform?

Greets from Munic,
Ralf

Opps! Spelling mistake, I meant 8310 not 8210. I also meant to reply to a topic, not start a new one! User posted image Sorry!

As for the battery, I remember your post about the resistor. I wouldn't pay full price for it to be butchered, and i wouldn't have a clue which part to soldier or remove so it WOULD be butchered!

Having said that, there is an auction on ebay for a batch of 9210 batteries, they were at 6 each last time i checked. I'd be willing to buy one, if anyone on here thinks they can make a solution the flashing problem.

I know the 9210's phone side is loosely based on the 6210, but flashing it with new firmware would replace both the phone and the communicator o/s would it not? Seeing as the 'computer' side isnt DCT-3 wouldnt that be impossible with a dejan based data cable, made for DCT-3 handsets only, or does it not make a difference?

What a long post for so early in the morning, i'll leave it there for today! User posted image

Nokia makes some nice phones, but unfortunately, most of them are launched with dozens of bugs! Software upgrades typically contain fixes for these bugs, and in some phones, can add some new features. Keeping your phone up-to-date with the current software can fix all sorts of weird problems, so do it while you can!

DCT-3 and DCT-4 refer to 'generations' or 'families' of Nokia phones. Many of their phones have similar design and software concepts, such as the 8310 and 6510, and thus are from a particular generation of phones.

I'm sure someone else could explain this far better than I ever could....and I am positive my explanation is probably quite full of holes; anyone want to give a clearer picture of this?

You're not the only one with a fear of completely knackering a bloody expensive battery...notice how I haven't done anything to my battery? User posted image

However, if you are interested, I could pass you a copy of the service manual and you can see what Nokia has to say about it!

And those are rather cheap batteries...since I'm a long, long way off from the British Isles, some kind soul could grab one of those batteries and attempt surgery. If I were to try that here it would cost me as much as almost 10 of those batteries on ebay...Nokia prices for you!

And as for flashing the 9210, I recall reading about some success with flashing the thing on another message board, but I can't quite say whether it's true or not. The message I read basically said that the phone is flashed in much the same way as any other DCT-3 phone, except for that little bit about using a service battery... An alternative would be a copy of Wintesla and the appropriate DLLs and security dongle, but who would have one of those besides Nokia? Of course, you also have to get the flash files...which would be big and quite rare for the 9210.
