Opera for 7650/3650 released!!

Opera bloody rocks.. It works just fine on my phone (3650) installed on the MMC, the installation was a bit tricky, since it requires double the size (about 1.7 mb) free on the main mem when BT:ing it to inbox (and then it copies it to installs) .. but I got it working finally, by:

BT:ing it up to inbox, double clicking, it gives "not enough free mem", but the install file is still copied (if you have at least 1.7 mb free that is)

Deleting it from inbox (since it's in installs too now)

Going to Tools | Manager, choosing the opera app, and choosing "Install".

Then I install it to MMC and it works beautifully.

(Oh, obviously this solution should work for main memory, but since ~2mb is a LOT of space on the 7650 to have free during install, it might be somewhat trickier.. but just make sure you have ~2mb when installing, and afterwards the whole file should just hog about 850 kb on your 7650. Obviously, make sure you aren't running any programs in the background etc etc to free up RAM memory as well.. there's some way to skip boot-time programs that load up.. I don't remember.. but that should save some space too -- sorry about the crappy paragraphing)

Pages are gorgeous, I'm just worried sick about the costs.. I will test it on my free GPRS sim card later (not sure if that will read html since it's a WAP gateway GPRS thingy, and not internet GPRS)
Anyway, I don't think this webrowser was ment for the 7650. ITS MEMORY IS ITS SHAME 😞
I agree to some point,if you want to browse the internet you need to have loads of free mem but it does look awesome.
I didnt managed to take a single screenshot because evertime i started Fxplorer in the background non memory error poped in opera.

@deathmonger,i think opera did all it could do to reduce its size. The browser wasn't supposed to run on a 7650,no matter how free memory was available,in the first place.I don't think it is possible to have a browser that supports all web standards at a smaller size.Anyway, can someone write how much free mem you need to install and run it on a 7650?

I have installed it with less then 2MB on the phone.
The memory problems occur if you have to many apps in the backgorund,i had sLauncher sProfiles and tried to take a screenshot with Fxplorer.
My guess is that with a little tweaking(Jyriks advice about cash sice etc etc) you could get it to work.

Thanks for the info, ghostdog. It works fine then.I'll certainly give it a try. With this phone you have to decide what you really need and make your choices. You can't install every app on the market. And i need a complete browser on my phone.

'The browser wasn't supposed to run on a 7650'

Problem is they dont say that and do say it will - and so will get some poor sods buying it before realising....

This is geting really stupid,i used opera,it worked,i had some problems but it worked,i opened, google,i opened allaboutsymbian and it looked awesome.
Try it before you say something like that.

Sorry deathmonger,i cant post any screenshots.
Could anyone browse AAS with OPERA in his phone and post some pics? Thanks 😊
sure gimme a url u'd like to see, and the name of a screencapping program (i was actually looking for a screenshot proggy but found the opera thread, and had just installed opera, so decided to pop in hehe) and i'll take some pics

after a few irks (ie having to delete it from the inbox) it seems to be running ok. i haven't actually *used* it yet (ie gone online live with it) but its running and displaying its default background. it looks uber cute

running on : 7650 with virtually nothing else installed (spacedoubler, but haven't compressed it yet... , bemused, bunch of images for wall papers, nothing substantial)

hmm problems

1. opera decides to view stuff locally ok, but when im online (i dont have GPRS so just using a standard dialup) it refuses to bring any data in. also my left-right options stop working.

2. bluetooth hates me, so the one cap of the "default" screen i took, i can't get off my fone atm. i probably need to reboot (got my Green/Blue lights on in mRouter, closed my BTtray, but PC suite still says disconnected. sigh!)

sorry bout that 😞

That's true, you have to close all running applications and even to kill all processes running in background in order to make it work. I tried with 3650 and I had to kill for example ePSwitcher and sSaverDaemon (extended profile and screen saver from Psiloc) with AppMan before I could start Opera.

Anyway, this is not a solution to use a browser that is supposed to be made by a professional company like Opera. Even the error message with not enough memory is very unprofessional. Unfortunately, with this first version for Nokia phones Opera company failed. Maybe next time...

There are other smaller browsers so yes I also have seen google and AAS but using other browsers without such an overhead and using a wap connection, on O2 wap means 500 minutes free browsing PM...

I know its a good browser Ive used the windows/linux model enough times, but for me a phone browser is a go between if Im want to do some serious browsing Im going to use a PC, thus Im not happy having such a large app on my phone for the occasional web browse on the train...

My main reason for my earlier comment was the people saying its not for the 7650 - as advertised it is its just too big for some 7650 owners in practical terms.... Though at least there is a demo.

Still hoping to get a P800 soon so Ill be happy to use it then 😊

Does anyone know if this version of Opera supports the importing of digital certificates like the Windows version does?

The error message is quite informative for us. The number in the message says how much memory you have available.

As mentioned a separate thread, the unable-to-launch problem is caused by other apps running in the background. All the apps that are pre-installed on the phone lets the OS close them down when another apps needs memory (such as Opera). We were not aware that there were apps out there that do not follow this convention. If we had known this would be a problem for many people, the error message would probably have been designed differently.

Note that for most people, this is not an issue. Yes, Opera uses a fair amount of RAM, but there are hardly any inconveniences with this. It seems to be only with apps such as sLauncher and sProfiles running that you get this problem.

Opera looks awesome Dag but i cant even start small ups in the background while Opera is runnig, apps like FExplorer that are quite essential and are not hoging much of the resources.

It would be great if you can do something about this in future versions.

Hi guys, let me put things straight. When i wrote "this wasn't supposed to run on a 7650 in the first place" i was refering to earlier announcements from opera that their browser for series 60 wouldn't be available for series 60 users due to the 7650's limited memory.I guess i didn't put it right.About opera's memory requirements as i wrote earlier with this phone you have to make your choices.Unfortunately we don't have as memory as we'd want to,for every great app out there.Doris and webviewer are great browsers for the occasional on the road web-surfing. Those who want the full experience should sacrifice other apps for opera. That's life.Or maybe the 7650.

I think that getting it on a 7650 at all is a great achievement. Opera, as it is, is still microscopic in terms of how much space it takes up when compared to other platforms and their mobile web browsers.

As a 7650 owner, I have already come to accept that my phone is of a previous generation (still smart however), it is old technology compared to the 3650 and P800.

I still love it, but I am aware of its limitations and when something as powerful and flexible as Opera is released, I don't expect to be able to run it without sacrificing some.

Go for it Opera! When I next upgrade my phone, I may meet you there!

Quite - I've had to bin the odd app to squeeze it on, but I managed it...

Opera once again meets one of my basic requirements, the ability to access my online banking servic from lloydstsb.com; first on the desktop, then on my Series 5mx now on my 7650. int technology, great;

in case anyone needed a s/s still , managed to get bluetooth working again after a reboot (only the default screen as its not working across my WAP gateway [ orange ] )

My local mobile service operator can't help me with the settings.... They seem to know nuts about the settings.

Anyone here from Singapore using Mobileone Service Provider?

Hi, em also on MobileOne. I believed you are having the same problem connecting using Opera as it requires an Internet gateway instead of the WAP gateway. The default gateway 'MiWorld GPRS' provided is WAP based. You will have to access it using the SunSurf Mobile settings which you need to activate.

Shucks...... that was what I suspected. The Customer Service Officer kept giving me the same settings even though I explained to her many many times. Will try out the SunSurf Settings and update you. Is Opera working fine on your phone and M1 network?

Nice one TomJ, hadn't thought of that.

The last time I tried my Bank (Barclays) on my 7650 the wap wouldn't work as their system is not setup to work with my phone (7110 and 6210 only as I recall).

So when I read you had logged onto LloydsTSB, I thought I would try Barclays, not expecting to succeed!

But it worked! This is a great prog! Now when I am down the Pub, and my Bank (which is other end of town), I can once again check my balance!

Would be nice if Opera was a bit smaller, but hey you can't have everything, and I did win Opera in AAS pub meet raffle on Monday! 😊

I've used it to settle a pub arguement by pulling up the IMDB.

On a serious, tech note, is there a way of telling Opera which author style sheet to use in small screen mode? Does it pick up media=handheld style sheets by default?

And is this the first forum post made from Opera on a 7650?
