There are tons of progs out there but how do you know they are virus free.
On the PC I use Norton and a good backup system. Plus I am an expert user discovering which file, damaged by a virus, to replace is easy for me. Symbian is new to me however but very interesting. So I would like to ask all you folks with more experience with this type of thing how to protect yourself from these phone viruses. Are the anti-virul programs for the Symbian S60 phones.
Thanks in advance.
no anti virus as far as I know.. most virii are probably aimed at completely destroying everything on your phone.. giving you two weeks of hell while they fix it at your nokia centre :P
Not much you can do about it as of yet unfortunately.
best thing you can do is use comman sense ie:
Dont download from warez or such sites only from the creator.
Dont install an app if its send to you and you did not ask for it
And so on..............
would the nokia centre or nokia (samething) even help fix it as it was caused by a virus or sometihng??
is there such a thing as a phone virus?
I'd say any phone that supports programming for it will see viruses eventually. Especially considering the API and programming for Symbian is basically open and free to use to anyone.
has anyone develop some sort of anti virus prog yet?
i hope there aren't any viruses.. but there is no AV as there aren't any official viruses (yet).
Well I don't know about Symbian viruses but I have a friend who's 7210 went haywire on him. He took it to a service center and they said it was a virus he downloaded off "the web". Had to wipe out the phone memory. Not a pleasant experience.
Of course one of the advantages of the EPOC system in the first place was that it was effectively virus free. Not that (presumably) you couldn't write a virus for it, more that the user base was so (relatively) low and that users were usually enthusiasts.
Now that EPOC has become (effectively) Symbian, and with Sony Ericsson on board as well as Nokia (and others in future) the user base is growing rapidly. Sooner or later someone will start to get on the virus trail - at least then someone will also get on the AV trail.
I suppose it's the price we will have to pay to get an alternative to WinCE/Pocket PC in the mainstream.
Let Psion be unconfined.
