The webmaster of club-siemens seems to be obsessed with JAVA though..

I've noticed comments from the webmaster saying that the P800 is cr@p because it won't allow JAVA applications to run in full screen.
I work in a java company, guess that's why 😉

I'm sure there are fullscreen java-games for the P800 as well, but the ones we have got so far only use about 50% of the display. The rest is used for a virtual keypad 😊

Ok, that certainly clears up the Java interest then. 😃

You are right about Java MIDP games and apps playing on the P800 having a virtual joypad on the bottom of the screen, but that's because(like I said) those games and apps were developed with the Series 60 UI(screen size) in mind.

But with Personal Java(which the SX1 doesn't support btw) you are faced with no such limitations.

Anyway, I don't care much for JAVA, or VB for that matter, as it has it's limitations, and that's where Symbian c++ comes in. :bday:

The reason does not have anything to do with the S60. The reason is because the MIDP standard requires that a certain number of control buttons be available, since the P800 does not have these "physical" buttton, SE needed to implement them in a GUI manner. You will never see any really great MIDP 1.0 apps for the P800.

Ok, I was a little uncertain about the reason being the developers working on the bases of a Series 60 UI or the standard of the MIDP itself, so thanks for clearing that up. 😉

On a general level I've noticed that the MIDP standard used in the P800 is rather poor. I mean, if you open a MIDP app and then close it and try to open it again, it usually fails, and you have to reboot the device in order to access that app again.

Anyway, the apps written in Personal Java seems to have no such problems, and they work in full screen as well.

I have noticed several people say this, but I have never had this happen. I must be lucky 😊 Did you get the R2D firmware upgrade?

Personal Java is a bit dead end though. Symbian will be dropping it. Its based on the older Java 1.1. It has not, and prob never will, have access to BT and other API's. It might be the better of the two Java's on the P800, but it's not ideal. MIDP 2.0 as an upgrade for the P800 is the only hope the P800 has for having excellent Java, this would make it much better than the SX1's Java.

Well, Personal Java does have access to GPRS..

What's the changes/improvements in MIDP 2.0?

What's the changes/improvements in MIDP 2.0?
Better access to network, HTTP/Sockets/UDP
Audio (MIDP 1.0 had none)
Better user interface
A Gaming API !!! 😊
Better security and code signing
Push technology (Messages will cause Apps to autoload and start)
Plus more... 😊

This plus other optional API's for Bluetooth and Media (Camera) and Messaging will make it very powerful.

@Raven, most of the apps or similar were alread implemented for the S60 so I dont really get your point!

I think SX1 from Siemens has some improvements but nothing WORTHY (exept for the MMC hot plig-in capability).I think NOKIA has way to much experience in this market, and that shows up in the 3650.

Muffy,we are not saying that there are more UIQ apps than there are S60 apps but that there are enough of UIQ apps to satisfy the average user needs.

PS:I was checking the UIQ news section on my-symbian.com and the UIQ news archive and i can say that ther are loads of stuff that i didn't even know about.I'm sorry to admit that my-symbian's news section(at least for UIQ) is a lot more informative then ours.

deathmonger,SX1 has better specs then the 3650,if they stay like that and if they are true.So there will be a lot worthy!
C'mon,24MB of internal memory,65K color screen,FM readio?
So,you are saying that Siemens does not have expirience in this market?
And i would say that nokia's expirence showed up in the first symbian phone(PDA) from the 9xxx series and the 7650 which sold over a milion in the first couple of months.

You have to take into account that AAS and My-Symbian are too different sites. I regard AAS more community-like where My-symbian is more shop-like. You can just go to www.handango.com most information is taken from there. In some ways my-symbian is better, new apps and stuff but when it comes to Symbian general news and involvement AAS is top. Just look at the Opera for S60, OPL etc. Not only we have posted this news earlier but people from this forum are actively involved in the development of it. There is a big diference between community sites and shop sites. However, because I dont like to talk about my-symbian in AAS because it is unfair since they cant see this and answer, I will stop. 😃

I agree that AAS in My-Symbian are two diferent sites.I only pointed at their news section because there are loads of UIQ apps there.
Maybe you guys are busy now (Exposium and everything) but the news section on AAS used to be a lot more informative and more up to date, and not just with news about the big stuff going on in the Symbian community. 😊

There is a new article about SX1 on http://www.xonio.com/features/feature_10468669.html

It's in german, but here are some of the things mentioned:

- SX1 plays MP3 through loudspeaker and headset
- Siemens are planning to make 24MB memory available for the user, even after the OS is installed.
- Available in August for about 600

They got some nice pics as well, click 'Fotogalerie...' 😃

😮
That's pretty impressive IMO, I thought it was supposed to have only 8-9MB available...

It sure is a beautiful device, and I really like the idea of the side-buttons being used as soft keys.
