Questions on Streaming Video to the 3650--A Primer Required

9 replies · 4,968 views · Started 29 May 2003

Perhaps this could be posted as a "sticky" as there seems to be a lot of interest and questions regarding video streaming.

This may be an ignorant question but that's what these forum are partially for. Here goes:

I want to be able to use my 3650 to access a website that provides live streaming videos of sporting events, primarily baseball games (for those of you outside the United States, baseball is a sport). TO watch the games on my PC I need to have RealPlayer installed and an internet connection with a throughput of at least 350K. Will I be able to access this URL from my 3650 phone and watch the live streamed video? If no, why not? If yes, how do I do this? What settings do I need to configure on my phone etc. I really need a primer on how to connect to URL sites on my phone and treaming video possibilities. Sorry for the ignorance but I am willing to learn.

Thanks

Good topic for discussion. I have no idea either how to get streaming video. Altough I am not a baseball afficiando there are other sporting events and other things I would want to be able to watch on my phone. Someone who understands this can be very helpful if they can explain step by step how it is done if it can be done.

Hi,

As bradfordlad quite rightly said, there is no chance of you getting a 350K throughput on your 3650, via CSD, GPRS, HSCSD or whatever - no chance at all (not even Bluetooth/IrDA).

Furthermore, most networks (every network in the UK, I believe) blocks the RealOne UDP ports, so no streaming via 3650 at all using RealOne. Period. The only solution is streaming via another application, such as the Oplayo Player.

If, however, you wish to try, just load up RealOne Player, click Open -> URL Address, and enter it there. You'll see that it will only accept rtsp links though, which are RealServer URLs, not standard HTTP Protocol URLs.

Also, it appears that RealOne Player does not work via Bluetooth, not even with the "dummy BT GPRS setting", which is a shame, because if you were on broadband, you would have been able to achieve 350k throughput, and bypass the UDP blocks enforced by your network.

So, in conclusion - although it is a great idea, and the basics are there in the 3650, it needs a lot of time and effort (as well as luck - if the network you're on does not block UDP) to get it working smoothly.

If you really want streaming video, (don't shoot me guys!) you're better off selling your 3650, and buying a 3G phone (if they are available wherever you are), which has the bandwidth and capabilities of doing streaming video.

I hope this information is of use to you. 😊

Cheers

I can stream with OPlayo here in Moscow over two main networks BeeLine and MTS. There is a third one that supposedly supports streaming content completely (i.e. via Real Player) called Megafon. Have a SIM card from them but don't use. Will try sometime (maybe this weekend if not too hung over from my buddy's birthday) and post a report.

Hi all...

This discussion is very interesting.
I thing that we try to find a solution in the wrong side...
I thing that the only solution is to find a way to minimize the size of video streaming (a way to do real time transcoding) before it comes back to our mobile devices, and generate content appropriate for the capabilities of our mobile device.

In this direction is coming up a new protocol CC/PP which you can find in http://www.w3.org/Mobile/CCPP/
This protocol sends to the server the capabilities of every device through the http request, and then the server transcode/generate and send content appropriate for the device which did the request.

I know that it sounds a little bit strange but there are many implemantations in doing something like that...

I have implemented something but now i am trying to find a transcoder that takes as input a link to a video streaming (rtsp://......) and outputs the transcoded streaming video which will be appropriate for the mobile device..(Does anyone know any tool doing something like that...??????)

I found many tools like Helix Mobile producer which takes as input a video file (for example test.mpg) and outputs the same file prepared for streaming...

Thanks in advance!!!

Manos Moschous

This is still odd though. Instead of going to URL I go to Guide and it takes me to a list of movies I should be able to stream but it doesn't work. It takes forever to connect and then.. server-time out... so... what's the deal?

Hey Guys

Try Fondo player but i dont know whether it available for symbian -60 but i use it on Sony P910

It works well over bluetooth but i cant get any rtsp links except few chinese Tv channels

Thanks
