FAQ: Blueooth and the Nokia 7650

36 replies · 12,498 views · Started 23 July 2002

What Bluetooth features does the Nokia 7650 have?

You can send/receive files (images, business cards, calendar items, notes, etc.) between two Nokia 7650 phones or between a Nokia 7650 and another compatible Bluetooth device.

You can connect the Nokia 7650 to a compatible Bluetooth-enabled PC to download e-mail, browse the Internet, send faxes or synchronise the calendar and contacts data.

Which Blueooth profiles does the 7650 support?[list][*]Generic Access Profile, [*]Service Discovery Application Profile, Serial Port Profile and Generic
[*]Object Exchange Profile
[*]Dial-Up Networking Profile and Fax Profile (phone used as a
Gateway)
[*]Object Push Profile
[*]File Transfer Profile (phone used as a Server)[/list:u]
Note: No headset profule, therefore no bluetooth headsets, this seems to be a software issue. Nokia could upgrade, but are unlikely too. The 7650 supports Bluetooth.

Please note that this is gleaned from forum / newsgroup posts. Just because a device isn't here doesn't mean it wont work, I just haven't seen any info on it. The 7650 can theoretically use any card that supports the Serial Port Profile...

Bluetooth or IR for the 7650?
Given that these are the only two connection methods which one should you use? This answer is in the forums (thanks ebo): Bluetooth is somewhat faster and a LOT easier to use, because you don't need a visual contact. With Bluetooth you can have the phone for example in your pocket as long as it's in the ~10 meters maximum range. Because you don't have IR or Bluetooth built-in in your PC, you need an adapter. Unfortunately Bluetooth adapters are more expensive than IR adapters. There are adapters that can with be used via USB interface and PCMCIA slots. USB adapters are cheaper. See here for more.

Please add to this thread with any information you have.

TECOM BT3030 also works with Windows 2000.

With Mac OSX there is some 7650 crashes in file transfer but Apple bluetooth driver are in preview release.

FabioM.

TDK Systems has added compatibility information regarding 7650 to their excellent website: http://www.no2wires.com/

The phone is compatible with TDK's adapters.

happy owner of 7650 😊

I would like to know how fabiom suggest thet BT3030 is working, for me and other just working 1 way: PC to 7650, but noway from 7650 to PC.

Is fabiom over here and can help?

I have WIndows XP PRO...

really appreciate!

Could people please post where they bought their PC Bluetooth adapter, how much it cost them and any problems getting it to work?

Thanks 😉

Yup, looks good. Supports Obex and Serial port so, from the general gist of the forums, it should be ok.

Any others?

I got the 3Com USB Adapter (3CREB96-EU) from www.microwarehouse.co.uk for 83

works a treat - once you read the instructions and read-me files properly 😮ops:

I know I have mentioned it elsewhere ... but I thought it should be added to the FAQ here (since this is all about BT)

How to set up BlueTooth connections to iPAQ and other devices ... I am no expert but I found this article seemed to explain it all http://www.wirelesssoftware.info/articles/bluetooth4nokia7650ipaq/

J2theIzzo, perhaps it would be an idea to add some of this thread into the faq file, under a bluetooth section, if you've not already planned to do so.

I'm working on it as we speak. 😃

I've tried the following adaptors:

MSI Bluetooth Trancieving Key:

Works ok with the Nokia Data suite under Win2k and can send files to the phone but has problems recieving files sent from the phone.

Mitsubishi Bluetooth Adaptor

Works well with sending files to and recieving files from the PC, but doesn't seem to be able to interoperate with the Nokia Data Suite due to the way COM ports aren't activated until a device requests a connection.

AnlaShok, did you finally receive your Wavelink BT Adapter from Dabs and have you had a chance to try it out yet?

I'm waiting on one of those too. Apparently they will be in stock within three to four days. I'll post on the compatability, if no-one else has by then.

I'm deffo going to buy one of those EIO/InnoVISION Wavelinker USB dongles over the MSI branded one. I've got a USB2 card made by InnoVISION, cheap, wellmade, good performance and good drivers...

Dabs.com do not ship outside of the UK, no. This to me begs the question: Why are they .COM and not .UK? Just a little prejudice of mine...

I'm still waiting for my order so it will be a race between ephebe and myself as to who gets the info up quicker 😉

Damn those dabs.com.I've been googleing Innovisions WaveLinker USB Bluetooth adaptor but no luck,if anyone finds a online store that delivers internationaly please let me know

I think the following should be added.......

Q: What do you do when you continually get a "Bluetooth System Error" even after a full phone reset?

A: Take the phone back for a replacement!!!!

Has anyone got Epox BT-DG02 working?

http://www.epox.nl/english/products/wireless/dongle.htm

My problem is that everything seems to work except when I try to send pictures from Nokia 7650 (pictures -> send ->bluetooth) to PC. Phone tries to send but soon says transmission failed.

Funny thing is that I managed to send a picture file from PC to 7650 with FTP-protocol. I wonder if this a driver problem with Epox?

it will be a race between ephebe and myself as to who gets the info up quicker icon_wink.gif

And then it'll be a race for people to buy one from Dabs, before they sell out! 8)

OK it's here. I now have my Wavelinker Bluetooth USB Dongle http://www.ivmm.com/eio/products_wave_link.html
It looks so nice I'm almost sorry to have to hide it away around the back of my PC 😊

The good news is it installed without a hitch on my Windows XP machine, although you do have to install the drivers before plugging it in. Once installed there does seem to be a problem with the software in that the browser app sometimes reports an error on startup and will not load, even though I had been using it just a few minutes previously.

I can send files from the PC to the phone using the browser (when it loads) and I can send files from the phone to the PC. What I cannot do yet is connect to the phone with PC Suite. The BT software loads virtual COM ports for various connection types (DUN, LAN, Serial, FAX) but PC Suite does not recognise a connection. I'm assuming it would use the Serial one. This may have something to do with the fact that Device Manager shows an unknown device called "Bluetooth COM Bridge", I suspect I will need to get that working although I haven't yet found any other drivers for it.

So in a nutshell: Phone to PC, yes. PC to Phone, yes. PC Suite, not yet.

I've only had the thing 2 hours so I hope a solution will present itself over the weekend.

Try to select all the com ports! In order to use my BT dongle with Serial I HAVE to have 2 coms checked!

i've ordered a Billionton from komplett

http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?action=info&p=25152&t=&l=&AvdID=1&CatID=&GrpID=&s=sr

they had the price wrong for a while so the total price was just 30 total with shipping, list price is 61

i think i read somewhere of bluetooth headphones for the 7650 with some sort of software upgrade or other??!! that would be really cool!! 😉

I use this card in my notebook (HP XE3) and without problems. U can use it in PDA with CF slot or in notebook with pcmcia. Reduction is inside.

bye Maark

I am using the MSI USB adapter as mentioned in another post similar to this one. It was from ebuyer.com

Works ok but can be a little buggy in W98SE.

Regarding BT headsets. I spoke with an engineer at nokia after being past around many personel on the phone. He confimed that there is NO update available and as far as he is aware there are no plans for one. I also emailed them 2 times and had 2 replies. One was very basic and said the same as the engineer i spoke to. The other went into a lot more detail but basically said that they did not include audio to improve the quality of the data BT connection. That did make me chuckle a bit.
