Pocketop Keyboard driver for the P800!

49 replies · 14,149 views · Started 19 July 2003

I haven't been able to find this driver anywhere, and I can't see any attachments here either? I have the pocketop keyboard and recently bought a p900, would love to try this... 😊

I believe the driver is in beta, which is why it's only distributed to authorized people only.

Try contacting them directly.

Well it was beta when it was available, now they (pocketop) just refer to symbian, which in turn claim there is now such driver. From what I've read symbian wont allow them to distribute it (beta or otherwise) because of some disagreement.

I was just hoping that someone who downloaded it when it was still online could send a copy my way. 😊

bowmanP900,Pocketop removed the driver due to copyright issues so posting the driver here would be illegal, sorry 😞

Yes I found out 😊 but it was only for series60... I had to port it to uiq myself, you'll find the link to my version there now (added an hour or so ago).

Well done for the port - but what does it do? I have installed and tried it but I just get a screen with a small text box and the keyboard doesn't work.

I've tried reading the readme but can't find anymore info - do you have to turn on the infra-red link first or does the program do it automatically? Whether it's on or off first doesn't seem to make any difference.

Any hints would be great

Cheers
Jago😊

You simply select "pocketop on" or "palmwireless on" from the main menu, and then the keyboard *should* work. The textbox is (I suppose) just a convenient way to test the connection.

thought so - doesn't seem to work on my P800 ...😕

I have a micro innovations keybaord which I thinkis just a re-badged pocketop as it's exactly the same so I presume the Pocketop driver should work with it.

(The pocketop beta driver previously posted works with it)

Any other clues?

Thanks for your prompt help!

Jago

I've only tested it (briefly) with p900 and pocketop, but its just a recompiled version of the s60 driver... so I assumed it would work the same way for other setups.

Hi there some great advice on the Pockettop keyboard but I'm also having problems locating the keyboard driver as Pockettop are saying there not posting the driver on their site anymore!!
Any chance of a copy and any instructions as it would be great, I have an HP568 Jornarda but ever since getting the P800 seem to be using that more and the keyboard would be a definite advantage.
Cheers
😃

Hi there, just got an email back from Symbian saying " We are working on getting a driver for the P900 and have just initiated a developement contract which means in 3-4weeks a driver will be available"
Hope this is of some use and that the program is compatible with the P800
😎

Bouncemaster, you didn't read the entire thread, did you?For the location of the Open Source keyboard driver look couple of posts up.

I concur with Jago above - I can't get this to work on my p800 and I know my keyboard is good, it works with the pocketop beta drivers.

The behaviour I observe is that when I select "Pocketop ON" from the menu, nothing happens. The "Turn off" menu option remains greyed out. It is as if the keyboard is not there. Same thing happens regardless of IR settings in phone.

Anyone have suggestions to try? What settings are required to get it working on a 3650/P900? I'm not a symbian developer and wouldn't know where to start in the source, has anyone else with more experience had a look?

I'm pretty excited about this software - it has huge potential. Keyboard control is something that demands customisation, everyone has different preferences on how they interact with their device. Nothing is more customisable than having full access to the source code. I envisage things like keyboard macros, emulating stylus taps etc.

Congrats to all involved with developing software, it is a signifcant effort to produce a working driver from closed hardware.

I don't really know what could be wrong, but then again I haven't looked that closely at the source myself (didn't take much to make the changes required for it to compile for uiq rather than s60, there is a documented procedure for porting...). Someone with a little experience in making native uiq apps will probably find all kinds of flaws in there. 😊

The fact that Turn Off remains greyed out would seem to indicate that ir couldn't be initialized or the port failed to open. It worked right away on my P900 (ir switched off).

I agree this app has a lot of potential, and I've already recompiled a version for myself with a pseudo-swedish keymap ( ). Adding dynamic keymapping and macros (assigning whole strings of keypresses to keys) is the next step, and really simple to do. I've suggested these additions to Chris Faherty but both he and myself are really busy with work and other projects atm.

Best thing would probably be to combine the s60 and uiq versions of the source (just inserting #ifdefs for everything platform specific) so that new features can be added and maintained across both platforms. Chris has indicated he will try this whenever he gets a chance, but I suppose anyone is welcome to really...

Flagging this keyboard app as a system application is also a given improvement (hopefully this would keep it from being shut down to save memory, or when starting edoom 😊).

BowGhostDog, sorry your right, read the other threads and got the open sauce version Great Job bowmanP900 it works fab, the only odd thing was I could not get it to work until I trued the infer-red off, then it works like a dream.
It will be interesting to see what Symbian come up with but Im more than happy with this at the mo, well done guys great job far better than lugging my Targus keyboard around for my HP568, and its soooooooooooooooooo good (looks cool to) on the P800, buy the way anyone know where to download the wad files for Edoom for the P800?

It appears either pocketop goofed or were not allowed to make the driver by Symbian.

It was there I guess but neither side will give it to you.

However this driver

Version 2.00 by Chris Faherty works beautifully on the pocketop on the P900 and the P800.

It also seems to have support for the Palm/ThinkOutside Infrared and the Targus Infrared.

the mistake I made in the initial setup was do NOT activate the infrared on the phone. Just leave it off or the driver crashes. Also do NOT click on the little "keyboard" picture on the bottom, you get some funky error that causes the programs to crash. But know that, it appears the P800 and P900 are always receiving and listening to infrared and the driver works beautifully with it. Just switch the "Model" to pockettop and choose "Command" and poweron.

A client of mine bought the pocketop because of the beta Symbian drivers and received it with no drivers and the Symbian support dropped. Even Symbian wouldn't help out.

But these drivers worked on his P900 and my P800 with no apparent issues except for those noted.

As for Bluetooth I'm looking myself. the keyboards are plentiful but the Symbian UIQ drivers are what I'm trying to dig up. Perhaps there is another third party design.

Anyhow good luck all

This has already been posted in this thread. The developer of the UIQ port is on of our users - bowmanP900

Has anyone tried the generic opensource driver with the cheap keyboards on ebay. They're about 13/$13, and are universal IR keyboards for PocketPC and Palm. Not sure what protocol they're using, but i might buy one and worse case try and get the driver to work with it...

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Vijay
