Does the 3650 have any advantages over the 6600?

Basicly you could argue: It costs less... *g*

- Edit: why dont you go to the Nokia Homepage and see for yourself???
(Use the Compare phones option or something like this - I just know the german Site)
There you can easily compare the features...

- It's available today (short term advantage)
- It's already reached a stable firmware version
- It's cheaper
- It easily supports replacement covers (useful for if you scratch it)

Does the 6600 have changable covers then? If so, is the screen part of the cover like the 3650?

Also, will the 6600 run ALL software that the 3650 can run?

Thank you for your help 😊

What do you mean by objective opinions? Surely they're OK. It's the subjective opinions that tend to get too personal!

The 3650 is low risk, while the 6600 is still high risk. All those 64k colours and big screen will demand new drivers .. I don't see Nokia getting them right first off.

An investor (and don't forget, when we buy, we invest) would see those a disadvantages.

The 3650 had a strong precursor, 7650. to clear the bugz in the air.

6600 is clearing the path for which model?[B]

re: Backwards compatibility

The 6600 is running a different OS from Symbian/Nokia with different API calls and a slightly different architecture.

Symbian/Nokia has attempted to maintain backwards compatibility by a system of abstract layers that look like the older 6.1/Series 60 1.0 OS.

Therefore the majority of programs will work on the 6600, however you may find that some that do not access resources/or servers in the recommended SDK ways or with the published APIs may fail.

No, it doesn't hence why I listed it as an advantage for the 3650 😊

I reckon keypad is one big factor. 3650's ring arrangement needs some getting use to.

3650's flat joystick is a little harder to use when compared to a protruding joystick which give a better feel and control.

series 60 is definitely more well tested and proven than series 7. but some applications for series 60 are also giving problems and not behaving well.

Thanks GhostDog. I'd mistaken 6600 as running Symbian OS 7...😃
It does run Symbian OS 7.0s & Series 60 2.0, but "series 7" doesn't mean anything in this context.

Assuming you mean UIQ (the equivalent of Series 60 on SE P800/900 / Motorola A920 phones), I would say that the apps are just as well tested, and just as proven, given that the majority of apps are available for both UIs from the same vendors.

I suspect 64k support is within the OS, so it may not actually need that much new support.

Disagree. The 3650 has a bug which prevents it from working on the UK Orange network 100%, yet the 7650 worked fine (once they fixed it). Shame Nokia didn't learn from the 7650 bug and include it on the 3650.

I doubt it will be the last business class Symbian Smartphone from Nokia, so it will have a successor, but it's the only one right now.

Thanx 4 clarifications.
In what shape did that 3650-Orange UK problem come?
Were there any public admissions given?
/at.

The problem with the 3650 on UK Orange is that the ansaphone notification never works - ie you receive no notification of voicemail (not even a blank SMS like the old days when roaming)

Nokia have no fix, Orange don't support non-Orange phones.

Rock meet hard place.

However, had Orange released the 3650, they would have worked with Nokia to fix the problem, and then there would have been an Orange specific 3650 firmware which could have been applied to a generic 3650 (I even have it in writing from my local Nokia Service Centre that they will apply the orange specific firmware to mine upto August 2004 if it's released).

However, Orange aren't going to release the phone, which means no fix from Nokia in the firmware, which means it will never be fully compatible with Orange.

Which makes a mockery of anyone selling the phone as "suitable for use on all networks" as it really isn't.

It doesn't support Line 2 out the box either, but you can send it away to Nokia and pay for that to be enabled (despite it being mentioned in the manual as a feature supplied with the phone).

if anyone from Nokia is listening, I'm willing to take a beta release of a new firmware to test the fix for them 😊
