What if you didn't use a Symbian PDA?

Here's an interesting thought (that could well turn out into a nice discussion!) Starting with one assumption, (whch is Symbian doesn't exists) what would you be using for your 'pocket computer?'

Would you be looking at a Palm device, something from Microsoft, and older Psion machine, or... what?

Probably something like the Samsung I500 (Palm).

Not so sure about fully fledged PDA's, possibly MS PPC having owned one, though I must say that I prefer having PDA functions built into a phone rather than standalone, it's less of a hassle carrying it with you all the time.

I would still be using my Cassiopeia E125. This PDA was and is absolutely great, but nothing got me down more than having to carry it alongside my mobile.

I do miss its speed and flexibility. I particularly liked the ability to use it as a great mp3 player.

The P800 is no substitute for the Cassiopeia, but that's rather like saying the Cassiopeia is no substitute for my laptop. The P800 is a brilliant compromise between a PDA and a mobile.

It still sits on my desk, languishing in its cradle, having not been used for four months. Any takers?

I would possibly still be using a Palm device. My Palm IIIx is still lying around somewhere with the folding keyboard.

But I am sure I would have upgraded by now to a colour version.

I would probably still be using a combination of Palm IIIe and Psion 5mx and the ancient Nokia 6130 (Orange branded Nk 702) phone that I had until this year. My first PDA was a Psion 3a (used it at uni, had a printer cable and a massive dot-matrix printer!) and I've always had a soft spot for EPOC/Symbian.

If I was getting a new non-Symbian machine I'd probably choose Palm.

I'd probably go for a Palm Smartphone because, like Jizzo I don't like the idea of carrying two devices. If the Palm Smartphone is not an option then I guess(Don't kill me know)I'd go for a shiny MS powered Ipaq or maybe a Linux powered Zaurus. One feature that my PDA has to have is a QWERTY keyboard.

but one feature notably lacking from the iPAQ is a QWERTY keyboard.... 😛

It would be real hard to start using a separate phone and pda after using a communicator for so long...
If I was more familiar with Linux I might go for Zaurus. It does look cool.
Many years ago I came to own a Toshiba Libretto click here for more info and I really liked it. The model I got became obsolete almost as soon as I got it (well... it does run Win95...) and unfortunately they stopped selling it as well as any spare parts for it in Europe soon after that. I believe Toshiba has kept developing it for Japanese market, and it would be interesting to know how it has turned out. So if the newer models were available in here I might even consider that and a phone. I'm not sure if it qualifies as a 'pocket' computer, but maybe a handbag computer... 😊

Well if Symbian didn't exist then either I'd stick to my old 6210 (or the older and in some aspects better panasonic GD92) or buy a SE T610 and for PDA wait for the Tapwave Zodiac(or if I had the money buy an iPaq)...

But thank God Symbian exist and have a 7650.😊
But still waiting for the Siemens SX1...😞

Yes i know! 😃 That is why i have warmer feelings for the Zaurus 😉

After owning a Psion 3MX, I bought the Toshiba e310 (a PPC). But since I bought the P800, they are both in a box somewhere. 😃

The big advantage for me is, that I always have my PDA with me now. I always forgot my PPC/PDA (...or just didn't feel like taking it with me), while I ALWAYS take my phone with me. Now I have both!

If symbian would not exist, I would probably buy another smartphone (with PPC Phone edition, Palm OS or MS Smartphone) cause I like the combi so much. If the hole smartphone-concept wouldn't exist, I would probably buy me something with Palm OS (the Tungsten C or T3 or maybe the Sony UX-50)

Ewan acquired one of the original Win95 Librettoes last year (I think on eBay) and it's been very useful. Slightly more portable than the NetBook, and has an unusual but highly effective mouse button. I like it, and would rather have that than a standard laptop. I prefer the touch-screen of a Psion though, and often find myself using a Psion pointer on it out of habit!

er, unsound, just how big are your pockets, dude?

Until the P800, I had a Palm m505 + Nokia 8890. Guess I'd still be on that combination.

Psion 5MX. i need the keyboard and also my 7110 to connect to the internet etc...

but thank-god for the communicator's.

VERY big, but then again, everything about me is big. But I confused "pocket" with "portable"....
