Just saw an email from SE some hours ago about the "SE P800 Application Proclamation", a contest for the coolest 50 P800 apps which "will be featured by SE during the worldwide P800 launch campaign".
Contest is running from now till Oct 31st, winners announcement Dec 2nd. Developers win (beside other stuff) a P800 device, est. worth "about USD 800"...
Guess that's an interesting price indication and, it helps to get an idea 'bout when this smartphone will be available (considering they wanto come up with the device AND a bunch of applications at the same time).

and btw, the p800 sdk costs $1500 !!!, whereas nokia 7650's FREE !!!
And also to apply the contest, man should be a member of "Basic Developer Support", which also costs $500 !!

There is a pre-release of the sdk, which you need support for in order to use it, and that is the fee for $500 from SE. Now.. to use the SDK (which is free), you need to buy CodeWarror C++ for Symbian from MetroWerks. Now that costs $999, and thus currently you have a cost of $1500, but you need to buy Codewarrior also after the launch, but no support package. Now for the Nokia 7650 you need MS Devstudio 6 or NET to develop for it. That is not for FREE as many would suggest, even though a great deal cheaper that then.

As compared to MS offerings where a basic Visual C++ .NET Standard costs $109 but Visual Studio .NET Professional
has an estimated price of $1,079 US .
So as you can see, it is a difference between the pricing of tools for proffesional use or not (even the difference might be very suttle) and I guess that for this competion that SE is hosting, is actual targeted against professional software companies that need or want to get a first product out for the P800. As it has a bigger screen, more memory etc but not a Joystick, I guess it might be more suited for more professinal use than the 7650 (playing with the jogdial and touch screen can be rather akward at times).
Yes, but, companies developing for Symbian (or even Pocket PC - I don't know about Palm...) already have M$ Visual Studio!!! And now, if they want to develop for the P800 too, they need to buy a totally new IDE (CodeWarrior) which they probably won't even use because they are used to Visual Studio. But, they just HAVE TO throw away 1000$ on it in order to get the SDK which is free!?! That's just plain stupid...
Whatever happened to the days when programmers were seen as intelligent enough to just be given a compiler, a linker, some header files, the relevant resource files, and some documentation/manual. You could then merrily go about your business in the text editor of you choice and run a few apps that measure in KILOBYTES (caps for emphasis, people have forgotten what they are on a PC now) to get your final product. Now you are forced to pay a fortune for an "all-in-one" "solution" that takes loads of space and isn't entirely stable. Is it just me who finds the way forward a step backward?

Just been on phone today with vodafone connect who state that the P800 should be available beginning of september on their network. My query regarding pricing was met with the response that when I call back they will give me a 'quote' based on monthly bill!. Not a bad way to do things if still priced reasonably, after all if spend �50 a month already on a higher usage tariff with gprs data, and text messages should be able to buy it cheaper as already using the data services the device is aimed at promoting, whereas someone paying �15 a month isn't necessarily going to use all the services it offers, hence not making the networks as much money. Thats vodafones spin on it anyway!.
