Play away with Sony
IT'S the future of home entertainment - a gadget that lets you watch a whole movie in your hand and puts arcade-style computer games at your fingertips.

SONY has taken the wrapper off its handheld PlayStation computer game console, giving a first look at what the eagerly-awaited machine will look like.

Due out at the end of next year, the PLAYSTATION PORTABLE - nicknamed the PSP - has been hailed by the electronics giant as the "Walkman of the future", a reference to its pocket tape and CD players that have taken the world by storm.

Like a little TV with its large 4.5inch colour screen, the gizmo uses tiny cartridges capable of storing up to 1.8GB of information - the equivalent of 1285 floppy disks.

The massive memory means PSP owners will be able to watch films at better than video quality, enjoy the latest music videos from their favourite chart stars or tackle games with the sort of graphics never before seen on a handheld.

It is also rumoured that the gadget may work as a mobile phone too.

Speaking at the PSP's initial launch in America in May, Sony's executive deputy president Ken Kutaragi said: "Just as PlayStation and PlayStation 2 revolutionised in-home computer entertainment, we aim to become a new driving force in the portable entertainment platform arena.

"Along with game applications, PSP will have a huge potential for delivering other forms of entertainment as well as live entertainment through the network, anywhere, anytime. This is the 'Walkman' of the 21st century."

The news comes just a week after the Japanese company revealed plans to shed 20,000 jobs worldwide over the next three years.

Sony already rules the roost in console gaming selling more than four and a half million of its best-selling PlayStation 2 in the UK and 62m worldwide.

But if this latest invention is to prove a reversal of fortune for the firm then it will have to wrestle the handheld crown from bitter rival Nintendo whose Game Boy machines have reigned supreme in the market for more than two decades.

The PSP will also have to prove a match for Nokia's N-Gage, a phone and gaming machine that was released last month in Britain and is already being given away free by some mobile networks in a bit to tempt customers to sign up.

Among Sony's other plans announced in New York is a rival to Apple's cult iPod digital music player for as little as 40. The cheapest iPod, which lets owners store thousands of songs on the palm-sized machine, costs more than 200.

Wow!!It looks wonderful!

The N-Gage and probably even the GBA will be long gone when the PSP is released,so i don't think it presents any danger to either of them.Maybe N-Gage 2 killer.Lets just wait and see what will Nokia think of next.

nice but is it a phone??
does it have gprs?
is it series 60??
i think n-gage will be a good competetir for this phone)

Ismail, maybe you should go trough PSP's specs again. If the PSP has phone capabilites the N-Gage doesn't stand a chance.

Well, what we have here? Oh yeah, the PSP.

Ok...

1. It will uses a media based on DVD only that it will be way smaller. Unfortunately although this seems an advantage it is also a disadvantage because the de vice will need more power, and as we all know power consumption is critical for mobile devices unless Sony plans to give PSP with a monster 2000+ mAh battery.

2.It will have no backward compatibility with the other PS. Don't forget that the biggest reason that PS2 became a great success from the beginning without even having a single title was it's backwards compatibility with PSone.

3.It will not be a phone (unless Sony will change mind but if this will become reality then they'll sure have many problems with Ericsson and their company (don't forget that SonyEricsson is a seperate company half owned by Sony and Half by Ericsson).

4.Nintendo made an anouncement some months ago claiming that in 2004 they will bring a new device in Market. It won't be for sure another Gamecube or sth like that because it is planned for after 2005. And considering that the anouncement was made a little after the anouncement of Sony's PSP, it seems to be an answer(another Game Boy (more Advanced)).

5.Don't forget the Tapwave Zodiac. Although it doesn't have the name it surely has the POWER plus it is a PDA (only N-Gage can compete with it).

Anyway,we will wait and see...

Imagine the size of the thing if it read PS1 discs??!! It would hardly be called "portable" would it?

It'll all be a different ball game by the time this comes out...

At the moment the specs look great, but I'm sure they'll be others coming out (Nintendo will probably have answer to this already mapped out).

Anyone remember the heady days of the lynx/gameboy/gamegear?

My questions are easy. can I buy it now? It sounds good but still concept.. loosers the gage is here, enjoy it

if u look at the pic, u can see and 'calling' button and an 'end' button just like a mobile phone. so its possible that the psp is a phone......what do u think?

As I said, PSP WON'T BE A PHONE...
There are no calling and end buttons.
The red thing you see is just sth printed on the device while the green button is the Power button.

Well, the proposed specs are impressive & all, but I agree with the above poster about power requirements. In addition to the power needed for spinning the discs, it's also got several graphics subsystems which will also eat up power, not to mention a large screen.

Something to bear in mind is that this is still vapourware at present, so the listed specs may still change significantly. Sony pulled the same trick with the PS2 originally, quoting awesome specs & claiming it'd natively support broadband networked gaming, which was one of the reasons it killed the Dreamcast (and no, I'm not a disgruntled Dreamcast owner or anything like that).

However, we all know now that the PS2 was actually a long way from online gaming at launch, & even nowadays with the add-on adaptor, the list of net-based games is rather limited. (The original computing power of the XBox was revised downwards repeatedly as well during development, so it's not just Sony).

Any company with a graphic design division can produce media-friendly pictures of a mock-up, but it doesn't mean anything. The British gadget magazine "T3" did it the other month, commissioning a couple of pics from an independent design company, so that they could stick a picture of a "PS3" on the cover to shift a few more copies, only to admit inside that it was just a speculative guess on their part.

I'm not saying that the PSP won't be excellent, or that it won't sell by the truckload (I'm sure it will), but until people actually get hold of it & try to use it, I'll withold judgement. Even then, it'll ultimately be up to my own experiences: many gaming reviews panned the N-Gage, yet when I finally got my hands on one to try it, I personally found it a lot more likeable & impressive than I'd been led to believe.

It's also true that Nintendo are working on the GBA successor, so it'll probably be a closer match for the PSP in terms of specs. What this all means for the N-Gage or its successors, I still don't know. And in addition to the PalmOS Tapwave Zodiac, I would be a bit surprised if a PocketPC-based gaming device wasn't in the works too - it's just a matter of time. I suspect quite a lot of blood will be spilt in the handheld gaming market in the next couple of years. It'll be interesting to see whose...

yes i have heard about this "psp" which will die out when it hits the shelves becuase of the cost of it and the power it uses. another thing it couldnt be a phone unless attachment for it is made becuase look at it (http://www.spiegel.de/img/0,1020,293847,00.jpg). and with it being so small i doubt the specs match the real thing they are probably just buttering the public up and when we buy the real thing it would be a small NES. and props to the people who make this for trying to put in a LAN signal for the shortage of controller ports and with this land how big will the signal be?? ive also heard of ports for conecting to internet for online play and a port for downloading music to blank discs. i think it is hard to belive all the stuff sony is trying to tell us.

The PSP will be a good mobile entertainment system from what i've seen at the E3 conference and the Nintendo DS will be an impressive mobile gaming system...and that from a guy that despises both companies!!!

Soon we may not need home consoles, cos' the power of these things are phenomenal and what they can do, with such a small footprint.

As for a phone gaming device, i believe we may see another manufacturer come up with something even better than the current N-Gages, that of course depending on if Nokia will do a very good job on the N-Gage 2.

Whether it will rival the other devices, is another issue. That in many cases, depends on the game library they have and how well that is implemented on the device.

I suggest look out for the E3 conference vids.......i forgot the link :dontknow:
