N-Gage cracked (no links to warez)

Nokia will today be licking its wounds and doing a fair amount of worrying, with the revelation that the N-Gage's security has been cracked like an egg, with other manufacturers handsets able to play the machine's software.

Specifically, the Siemens SX1 is already capable of running N-Gage games, with Sonic N being the only game seen in public, though its expected that the others wont be too far behind.

This is expected to be the start of a process that will see third-party hardware add-on sales of devices that will enable many phones to simply suck up the N-Gage content, then go on their merry way.

Nokias reaction to this new, seemingly unforeseen problem, will be interesting to observe, to say the least.

didn't see it posted anywhere else that the siemens phone was now capable too so i thought i would just post it in this forum, obviously move it if necessary

Third-party hardware add-ons? Sigh... What are they smoking?

SX1 is a S60 phone, N-Gage is S60 phone. I don't find that suprising at all. No "third-party hardware add-on" is going to make e.g. T610 a S60 phone.

Maybe they meant MMC readers and Joypads or D-Pads so the gaming expirience would be more enjoyable.

Like Arakin, ther are not many Series 60 phones out there that can run all N-Gage games.

The SX1 isnt the only phone that plays ngage games. To my suprise a customer was showing me SonicN and Pandamonium on his 3650.

Hopefully this wont prevent Nokia from bringing out newer games in the future.

Interesting one this.

I was under the impression that the N-Gage version of s60 had been added to, using N-Gage specific APIs to allow the games developers better access to the low level system (and hence, allow them to produce faster games).

I would have expected Nokia to have installed these on ROM within the N-Gage, which means other Series 60 phones would be missing vital components needed to run N-Gage specific games (which could be where the 3rd party add-on comes in).

Will have to wait and see as more news comes out...

It seems ppl have got the games working on all s60 phones to some degree or another.

The 6600/Sx1 seem to have the most success due to the amount of RAM they have.

The 3650 can only play the games which can fit into its tiny amount of spare RAM (like sonic) hence you will not see TR or TH on it ever due to there memory requirements.

I also believe the 6600 has to be in flight mode.. so I presume there are some memory issues there as well.

Nokia should be worried about ngage users getting the games rather than other phones..its a cool gimmick to see TR for example on the SX1 but can you imagine trying to play it properly??? (pad + 9 keys)

With regards to the games I have tested a few.. and I can confirm that multiple games can reside on the same MMC card.

Some games like Puzzle bobble (i think) do not work on other phones which could indicate there are apis which could be implemented to lock them down.. but which we can presume have not been utilised in the first gen of games. as the games get bigger (and the devs better with the hardware) I would expect to see compatibility with the other S60 phones reduce (if there really are internal api differences between them)

The fact is you can drop lots of N-gage games on a MMC. Do not forget the N-gage has a joypad and more! These games have been hacked but to not play fluidly on other Phone due to the lack of the joypad---or memory and other reasons! Don't be so shocked that the game have been hacked be happy that the gage is still the best medium to play these games!

I work here in Germany for Semens and have had 5 company phones and all are Siemens. I have the s45i from the firm here in front of me.. I reallly think our phones (siemens) and pretty crappy!

nokia announced that they will strictly strengthen their security codes... and as days fallow, sites that are hosting official ngage games hacked one by one... and nokia announces that they know this and they will fight more and more aggressive to protect the copyrights of their games. i think that becomes like a cyber war between crackes and nokia. and i don`t think the games will be secure even they put a huge securty wall on their software... what do you think?
