P900 Sync. Problems!!!!!!!!!!!!

32 replies · 6,616 views · Started 17 November 2003

For those of us who's phones were working fine whilst connected to our PS's then suddenly for some reason they cannot connect anymore. I HAVE THE SONY ERICSSON ANSWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Basically........ They don't know what the answer is! I spoke to customer technical support who said they over the last few days have had a number of calls relating to this matter. It appears when windows updates itself (hotfix) or Anti-virus software downloads new updates it knocks out the Sony Ericsson software.

They are currently setting up a team to find the problem and when it has been identified they will post on there web site. In the mean time hard lines! there is nothing that can be done.

For those of you who have not had this problem so far he stated not to download any windows hotfix just yet or updated virus software.

HMMMMMM We wait with baited breath!

Hope it doesnt happen to me 😞 havent connected mine yet, im still backing up my p8 to move my data manually to the P9!

Had a reply from Sony Ericsson. They have given me some instructions to change my Norton virus protection but at the moment i have no idea what they are on about (tecky speak) so i am waiting for them to explain in english

actually I haven't face any of these problems, although I updates Win2k and XP regularly, and I even update my AntiVirus and even the ZoneAlarm Pro. 😊

guess SE are wrong about that, and need to explain more!😡

I might suggest u uninstall the sync software, clean up your hard of left files, reinstall it again, it might help (although guess u already've done that!)😉

Yes tried that but i get the same problem. However if i disable my norton firewall everything works fine so it is definatly a firewall problem. I just have to try and find out what i need to do to fix it

I have now spoken at length th SE Data Support and it is apparently a problem between NORTON and SE software. For those of us with the problem we need to do the following.

1 - disable NORTON Firewall

2 - Connect phone . Wait until it connects properly then re-enable the Firewall.

At least that works for me

or I suggest switching from Norton to Zone Alarm, it's much easier, effective, user friendly, and u can let your phone coonect to PC all the time after it asks u once (wheather to accept or block connection).
anyway good luck with your Norton😛

ZONE ALARM. Thanks for that once my subscription is over with Norton i will do that. Wonder if it's worth contacting NORTON re. this????

I had uninstalled Norton on my laptop and got Zone Alarm but then even with that, it does not work well. It still says in the phone connection link that I am connected but then The PC suite and other related stuff says that my phone is not detected and that I must define my phone? what on earth is happening with this thing!!!

well anthonyjacks it looks like it's just you and me!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey there, so are you telling me that the changing of the anti virus thing did not work for you too? And yeah how come it seems that it is only me and you having these problems?!!? SE have totally no idea on what to do. They were just like telling me to remove all other conflicting files...BYE....they really are bad with these things you know...

I just got it. There must be some sort of sort of software on our computers that is preventing the thing from being detected. what I did honestly was my last resort, I backed up all my documents and formated my whole computer and then voila it works so smoothly that it slides!!!

I have norton 2k3 running fine on one manchine and norton 2k4 running on another.. I have a P800 and P900 both sitting in cradles and they have never had problems syncing.. As a matter of fact I initially tried to sync my P900 with the original P800 software that was installed months ago and it worked... I simply updated the software from the P900 disc afterwards and still no issues.. So as far as the Norton SE software issue I am sure the issue might be a bug with how Norton is running on your computers. Norton has issues with almost any programs if Norton has an issue with your computer first. Meaning there might be some corrupt Norton dll files that might not seem corrupt to the user eye until they run into 3rd party software issues. I have had issues like that with Norton and other software..But it all lead to some Norton corruption that prevent other programs from running ok. At least that's the way I would go about analyzing it.

I am running Norton 2003 and it still works. And to think that I uninstalled Norton because I thought that it was the problem...

Ihave a different sync problem. What happens is that everytime I install some applications my phone restarts somewhere in the middle and tells me that it has done so to improve performance.

I also got this error even while just using P900 remote and uninstalling an on my PC using the P900 remote. It restarted somewhere in the middle on uninstallation. So i tried to uninsall it on the phone then nomral way and no restart, so im guessing it reallly is bec of the sync station.

I recently had a post in some other forum about this.
se bottom.

I had the same problem with my P800 on my desktop.
It didnt work there, but worked fine on my laptop.

Now I sold it and bought a P900 instead ....

Installed the software on the CD.....
Same problem

Phone Connection Link, works.
Says its installed via USB cable on Com port 3
And it moves when I put the phone in the cradle.

But, the phone Monitor finds no phone.
Com3 is activated, Com2 and Com2 is deactvated.

Nothing happens when I klick on the Communication Troubleshooter" button in the "Installation" tab.

SE support says that I should deactivate Antivirus software
and firewall if I have that installed.
(Worked fine WITH Antivirus running on my laptop)

They also said that a certain hotfix for WinXP could cause this.
I removed the hotfix on my desktop when I had the P800,
but there were no changes....

Update:
Got some advice from SE telephone support:
They said that if I have "Imesh" (known filesharesoftware),
and/or "shop at home agent" (spyware) installed, that could be the reason why its not working.

Or if I have some other PDA software installed...

Im pretty sure I dont have this, but I will check.

The P900 sync story never ends. I'm tired to listen SE supporters in emails to reinstall Norton, McAffee and other coexistent software to make synchronization suiteable for every user of the P900. I still believe that SE is not aware of the important issues of unsupported features. I'll never buy as early adopter the new phones from SE.

Why doesn't these guys set up a supporter taskforce and ask Microsoft and IBM pros to help? Outlook and Notes are the most common products in the market. It must be easy to solve the problem quickly, the only thing to do is to act !

Wake up SE, we are paying you through buying new phones, what will happen if we go to Nokia or elswhere.....

I honestly think the problems that you guys have experienced are do to some issues with your PCs per se.. You must also understand that when you call a manufacturer rep to ask for help with a machine that happens to be built by another manufacturer all answers may be suggestive in nature.. Manufacturer's build devices based on compatibility with a compliance or standard.. For example, their BT devices must comply with a conformance.. Such as the ISO900/ISOxxx standard that most companies must follow.. So when seeking technical help with compatibility issues know who your audience is.. Don't expect the rep to understand the nooks and crannies about your IMB/Compaq/Sony/Dell/etc.. PC when they are S.E.. Its easy to 'globalize' a specific error when one goes through it.. However, when several others are not having the same issue one must question where the root problem really is.. I have learned to not rely on SE or any other technical rep when it comes to asking questions about compatibility troubleshooting with a device they are not experts in.. 9/10 times you are probably more capable of diagnosing and troubleshooting the error yourself because you may have a more intimate knowledge of your own device.

Remember decisions made for the output of a device doesn't usually come from the entire company.. Corporations have internal struggles and battles when it comes to manufacturing a device for the end user.. The R&D department fights with Regulartory/Quality, they fight with Marketing, and they in turn fight with the plant managers that have to mass manufacturer the device.. So in the real world you will never get a perfect machine because it all depends on the might $$ at the end..

Yes your are partly right. I worked for large US and European software-companies over the past 18 years. The unsolved problem in the SYNC mechanism is solvable, as soon SE decides to produce Software in ISO standards. What we have seen, and my company has bought 150pcs SE-P900, the software even does not work on standard IBM PC/Notebooks, XP pro installation and no other exotic Software installed. Pretty simple. I also understand the big pressure the R&D people have inside SE, but it's a strategic issue to survive the battle for mobile phones. The users are the future commanders for SE'S success. I keep the forum posted asap I have a clear answer on the SYNC issues.

Cheers.

This is the answer that the Swedish SE Support could NOT give me.
I got it from the global support.
This is the emailaddress: [email protected]
A friendly guy named Rickard gave me this answer:

"The PC Suite uses the Phone Connection Link to communicate with the phone.
Phone monitor is only used for Dialup Networking Wizard. In order to get the
Phone Monitor to detect the phone you need to disable USB in Phone
Connection Link, activate the port in Phone Monitor and set cable mode to
modem in the phone.
If you have problems synchronizing, make sure that you don't have any other
software for synchronization installed. If you have a locally installed
firewall, try disabling this."

After understanding this, I got it to work on my Laptop.
So, the "Phone Connection Link" is the only one to be enabled when you want to make backups and transfer files from/to your P900.
If you have a Comport activated for the "Phone Monitor" at the same time, it will not work, and the phone will not be found.
Oh, I also installed the latest version of PC Suite (ver2.01).

And I have Norton Antivirus running too.. 😊

Now I will try this on my Desktop.

Yes, SE has released last week a new SYNC-Software for the P900. The release is 2.1.1 (available in all major languages)

See if link works:

http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?template=SP1_17_1&B=IE&PID=10101&FID=2263&LM=SD_V&FileCatID=4&MN=Synchronization&noredir=1

You'll find some major bugs fixed as described here in this forum under this thread. But, some open issues are still there.

1.) Canges and new entries in Notes 6.x are not replicated into P900
2.) Only entires made with P900 are synchroniszed into Notes.
3.) Changes in those entries in Notes are not replicated back to the P900

Hmmm.... but this fix does not chrash the agenda completely.

I keep you informed.

Here is some additional information that might help to sort out the problem.

I bought a Nokia 7650 in July and it worked - except the syncing (same problem: phone is "connected", but PC Suite doesn't recognize it). After desperating tried to get help from nokia and some forums I gave up and replaced the phone, now I have a P800 (since 1 week).

I installed the newest pc-suite and .... had the same problem like you guys and the same problem like before with the nokia 7650.
So this shows, that the problem has nothing to do with the phone manufacturer, but the very basic symbian syncing software, which seems to work similar or identically in both versions.

Roger - Germany

Had this myself when I installed the sync problems.

Have you set preferences for the Mrouterruntime.exe and syncml.exe progs?

It could be that your firewall is not allowing the phone to be seen properly.

PC Suite uses these programs to communicate with the PC. If you haven't allowed these programs to talk with the PC in your firewall software, then the phone won't be recognised.😊
