All I say is that's total b*ll*x. If Nokia did that, then the 7650 would stop selling.

All the 7650i will be is a tri-band version of the 7650 for the US market. If they add any new features, the model number would change numerically as happened with the 6310 (i.e. updated 6210).

Well, it is in russian only. According to Eldar, Nokia will stop production of 7650 and instead will produce 7650i. I have no reasons not to belive Eldar. He is well known in russian mobile community.

The only thing that concerns me is the lack of support for plain 7650 owners that would result in this being released so soon.

There are no bugs in the 7650 that I can think of, though there are a few niggles which, I hoped, could be put right in firmware upgrades. Of course, if the 7650i is going to be top dog, there may not be any reason for Nokia to keep updating the 7650 - that's what concerns me.

There are a few big-ish bugs in the 7650 let's be fair.

I don't know if anyone else has come across it yet, but if you use up too much memory your phone becomes unusable. This is because Nokia forgot to set up a "Protected Memory" buffer in the phone. In other words DO NOT let your phone drop under 100k of memory, or you will either have to wipe your phone, or take it back.

Also, many users on other forums have compained about: Quiet speaker, rubbish alarm sound, buzzing in the earpiece for the first 10 seconds of a call, first name\last name the wrong way round in the contacts list, lack of Audio Bluetooth Profile (that is a shocker to be honest), problems connecting to Club Nokia PhotoZone and last (and I'm sure not least) the volume through the handsfree kit is stupidly quiet.

I'm sure many people have solved one or two of these problems, but the fact that you had to in the first place is not great. If the 7650i does come out, I can imagine it will be similar to the current one with all of the above problems removed.

But that would basically be Nokia admitting that the 7650 was sold unfit for purpose, and that in the UK under the Consumers Act means everyone who bought one would be entitled to a free replacement or refund.

I certainly don't think it will happen - people would certainly have second thoughts about buying Nokia again.

The "memory full" problem is indeed a bug. My opinion is that they _have_ to fix it in the 7650. It can be fixed in software, in this case, and it's one of those troubles that cause a recall if they can't be fixed. My guess is that you can file a class action suit, or the equivalent in your country, against Nokia if they do not fix the problem in existing 7650 and force you to buy another phone to have it fixed.

Alarm sound, first name/last name are dislikes, not exactly bugs. They can fix them in software, with very little trouble. A lot of people is complaining about them, so if they do not fix them, it means they don't care a f**k about customers.

Lack of audio bluetooth and 4Mb: they are another story. You knew these limitations of 7650 when you bought the phone, if you didn't like them, you could leave the phone in the shop. So it's Nokia right to come up with an improved phone. It might not please customers that they come out with an improved version just 4 months after the launch, but i can understand it.

I agree,nokia does have bad customer policy,they wanted to charge me 30 euros for the 7650 CD which did not came with the phone.
This 7650i issue is not making me a very loyal nokia customer.

We all bitchin about how crappy Nokia act of dumping current 7650 owner and just go ahead with 7650i (if the rumour is true), but did Nokia know about this? I DONT think so.

So lets make ourselves be heard. Write to Nokia via email or letter, fax them, call them, etc. Let yourselve be heard. I have written to Nokia (told that they haven't heard of the 7650i, called them (same answer).

If most current owner of 7650 do the same, Nokia will definitely take some action.

Spread the news too.

If AFTER all this they don't act, then we all know how Nokia ran their business. Write to CNN or whatever. Write to you country Consumer Proctection Agency, etc.

PUSH Nokia to do whatever necessary. This is what happened to HP and Palm when the consumer complains about the screen not being able to display 65K color (even when the ad. says so).

Personally, I don't think Nokia will bring out a 7650i. If they are going to improve the hardware side of it, then they will rebrand the phone enitrely... like 7660 or something. If 7650i is indeed coming out, then it will probably be the same phone with software upgrade, just like the T68 and T68i. The T68 owners were able to upgrade their phones to T68i free of charge, and I suspect Nokia will allow us to do the same.

They can dorminate the mobile phone market for a reason...

The only nokia can do worse than coming out with an hardware improved 7650, is coming out with a software improved, or bugfixed, 7650 _and_ not giving the users a free upgrade path. (and, afaik, nokia never gave a free upgrade to an "i" model).

But it's only speculation until we see something.

You guys are already mad about something that is not even existing! NOBODY outside Nokia really knows anything about a possible i-version. Someone quotes a obscure Russian web page. Someone else knows a friend who is supposed to know another friend who's father has been working somewhere in Scandinavia so he must know... Why can't you just enjoy the best GSM phone in the market NOW? Surely you didn't expect the development of this gategory to stop at the beginning. 7650 is not the last one of it's kind.

I don't think anyone is arguing about the release of a 7650i. Can you imagine if everyone complained when Intel brought out a faster processor, or when CD's replaced Vinyl. We would still be living in the dark ages!!

What we WOULD compain about is if Nokia quickly released an updated phone only a few months after releasing the original, which contained fixes for the bugs the original one had. If you pay �200-300 for a phone, you expect AFTERCARE service.

For all Microsoft are money-grabbing theives, at least you can still download updates for Windows 98 despite the fact we are now up to XP. Nokia should do the same and support past phones as well as working on new ones. If I know that my bugs can be fixed with updates, I am a happy man and will continue to buy Nokia phones. Otherwise I look elsewhere for a company with better service. That is the beauty of a free economy.

Do you really think that Nokia would fix the bugs and force everyone to buy a new phone? That's silly! Nokia has no such history. Why would it do it like this now? Software bugs will be corrected and made available when the fixes are ready.
What kind of aftercare service you would expect and are not having? I'm sure Nokias are reading this forum. Maybe they can learn something.

There is no way to update the software by just downloading the fixes from the web site. Ordinary people don't have the needed equipment to flash the read only memory. The equipment costs money and this is why the service points charge you for the updates.

It's funny to read how some people have reflashed their phone with the same firmware than they previously had. This is of cource waste of money. Usually when something has been fixed the version numbering changes. AFAIK firmware version 3.12 is still the latest.

Of cource the bugs will be corrected the fixes made available for 7650. If 7650i ever comes it will be a feature update not a software fix.

Oh, I forgot that: the only thing N7650 __BADLY__ needs is a way to restore the C disk during the boot process, when the phone application is unable to run. You push a key or two when powering up the phone and the phone is completely erased and restore to a factory state.
Tha would be good both for users, developers, and Nokia repair shops.

I take it by the roll of the eyes that was meant as a vesicious remark. To wipe your phone WITHOUT taking it back to a service centre, you key the code *#7370# into your phone, which returns the phone to first-day sale setting.

Please try and believe me here, THERE IS NO 7650i.

The reason I know? Because I make a robot which puts labels on the phone. an extra character for this label has NEVER been specified, and before you say well isn't that easy, no it is not, before you say labels are labels, no they are not.

There is one supplier of this product, there is no 7650i. The 6310i had its labels specified 1.5 years before launch.

Here's my 2c.

Re 7650i, if there is one so be it. But I doubt it as if they up spec'ed it, it would start entering the 92x0 series. Wasn't that half the reason they didn't put lots of memory in it in the first place? To keep the two phones distinctly apart for the different market segments.

I've had Nokia phone for years never had any major problems. I had a 7110 until I bought the 7650. Now the 7110 was a that had phone several rom upgrades 😞 . All I ever had to do was walk into my Nokia Service center and go "please sir may I have the new upgrade" 😉 they would check the phone was still in the warranty period if it was the upgrade was free otherwise there was a small charge.

So if there is any rom upgrades for the 7650 (god I hope their is soon!) they should be free and hassle free.

The only problems I'm experiencing is GPRS related.. WAP browser crashing and email app crashing. And often not being able to disconnect from the GPRS network. Nothing majorly frustrating just a little annoying.

I'm amazed at how people can get so annoyed over speculation of something that may or may not be true!

So far we've had nothing but rumours. No confirmation of the existance or even a plan for a 7650i.

As for the Russian article, I have a large pinch of salt here to go with it!!!
I'm sure many people who read these forums have had several generations of Nokia phones and the reason they stick with Nokia is because of the quality of the phones and the good history of the company.

If a 7650i does come to the market (and I'm not saying it will!), then I may be a bit disappointed that I didn't wait for it, but I won't regret the time I've had with the best phone available until that point in time.

Of-course, being with Orange, I'm entitled to an upgrade of my phone every year 😉

It's all based on rumours, besides even if they did surely we all knew that the 7650 would be supercedded by a newer model. The phone industry is getting just like the computer industry new models replacing things every week. Just enjoy the great phone we've all got and look forward to newer models which will revolutionise the way we use the phones. 😉
