I've been copied on a Symbian email asking for:
"Top 5 Functions" (functions that already exist), and
"Top 5 Desired Functions" (what we'd really like, but isn't present)
I've suggested a few things, but I'm copying Symbian a link to this thread so let them know what you all think.
http://allabouter6.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2033 comes quite close I'd say 8)
That thread is what made me think of it.
I've emailed Symbian a copy of that link and a copy of the link to this thread.
The MOST critical thing they need to address is the memory problem in the 7650. (recap: Users are allowed to fill the camera up with pictures, but after the free memory drops below 100k the phone cannot boot and becomes unusable.)
After that, there are mainly sound bugs that need addressing.
My top few functions would be:
Movie clip recording, even if its QCIF at 10fps
Better speakerphone volume. Games & ringtones are loud but the handsfree spekerphone is pathetic on mine, although this may be a bug with v3.12?
Hmmmmmm..... the phone is just so good, there'snot much more I can think of.
A 'today screen' option like that on PocketPCs would be fantastic, ActiveDesk is one, but you can't see the battery meter, or the time of day when using it.
The ability to add apps and java software into the shortcuts menu.

Top 5 (ok 7) current Apps for me (what needs fixing or be a nice addition)
1. Contacts (option for first last name or last first name)
2. Messaging (support for multiple email accounts and it crashing occasionally when accesing emails!)
3. Calendar (link with to do list so you get alarms and reminders)
4. Camera (better compression options, maybe user setting)
5. Convertor (link to a currency website and downloads the rates so we dont have to look the damn rates up)
6. Image viewer (add some image utilities like resize and save so scale 640x480 -> 320x240 and rotate) ; )
7. Media Player (MP3 support, Wav ring tones take up too much space!) ; )
Sorry there is just so many nice features..
Top 5 New Apps
1. WWW browser
2. Simple Database (like the 3 and 5 series psions have!)
3. World Clock (like the 3 and 5 series psions have!)
4. Word / Excel viewer. Or Pocket Excel type thing would be nice.
5. OPL, I would dearly love this. I loved it on my Series 3 nearly 10 years ago. Use to write my own apps all the time. Even wrote a data logging system for a local council. Was soo easy. Of course would need to supply with PC friendly version or we'll have 7650 users with RSI! It's a good way of getting people writing code for the thing. How much do I need to grovel to get it!!!
Ok from that list in summary get a psion and merge it with the 7650 😊

You've gone and done it now, Ewan will be here before you know it probably telling you off for not putting OPL at the top 😉 As we speak, baby seals and killer whales are being held ransom as bagaining power with Symbian to continue OPL dev on to Series 60 and UIQ, oops I let a game plan out of the bag, where am I gonna hide these whales....... 😉
TOP FIVE FIXES
1. Wrap text on Menu's
2. Contact List sorting eg choose between first and Last name
3. Better memory management eg Dont allow user to use any less then 100k, and perhaps throw in a memory compression utility by default rather then 3rd party software
4. Autlock feature, rather then that pesky pop up EVERY time you close the phone
5. Btter shortcut system,s o you can make shortcuts directly to items.
TOP FIVE THINGS THAT SHOULD BE INCLUDED
1. FILEMANAGER - THIS SHOULD BE IN THERE BY DEFAULT!
2. Recording Video, yes even if its 10fps
3. WWW Browser
4. FILEMANAGER - yes I have noted this already but I cannot stress how handy it would be to have it on here now rather then installing other software.
5. BETTTER SCREENSAVERS - I dont particulaly care about em, so ignore the caps but yes
Apart from that, the phone is still great and im still loving it 😊
only thing that could make it better would be getting the video recorder and mp3 support (remmeber peeps mp3s can go as low as 32kbps, so you could fit a few on the phone)
😊
The main thing that I am interested is the volume, it MUST be increased. That is the only thing that I really want fixed...
I wonder how many of the items listed here, although very worthy, are actually the responsibility of Symbian? I think that many, if not most of the things mentioned here are actually Nokia's problems.
I could well be wrong though, just a thought.
PS.
Have you noticed that the word 'thought' is just like the word 'though' only with a 't' on the end, yet they are pronounced quite differently where 'thought' rhymes with 'bought' and 'though' rhymes with 'door'?
How did you end up with though sounding like door? Did you not mean to write bow?
Its probably the welsh pronunciation 😃
I'm not sure if this topic is really meant to be just 7650 or Symbain devices in general.
As far as TANKERx's comment is concerned I'm not sure where Symbian's role starts and finishes. Symbian definitely develops some of the software as well as the OS i.e. most of the stuff on the 9210, but did they develop much of the software for the 7650 or P800?
Anyway heres some of my suggestions.
1) OPL for all Symbian devices just to keep Ewan happy 😊 and as its the easiest way to develop simple software for mobile devices.
2) I agree that a simple data base would be useful.
3) PC Suite for MAC and LINUX. There may be relatively few users (I don't use either) but it would be good to have them on board.
4) Support for OpenOffice file formats. Because I believe in the project and think open standards for document formats should be encouraged. OK I know OpenOffice formats are not a standard yet but I hope they could form the basis of one.
My 5 main needs for the 7650/Symbian:
1 - PC Suite (or even just a pilot-link conduit) for linux
2 - XML document format (OpenOffice)
3 - OPL or some form of "basic" for quick'n'dirty hacks - that is how many great apps are born
4 - File manager included
5 - Reversi/Othelo!

Nokia wrote System 60, which is the interface and icons and suchlike. Symbian did the kernel, underlyin OS, the app codes, and a lot of other stuff.

😊
Yes at a base level it will keep ny quiet, but it will also allow hobby developers to make small, simple and effective apps for the device. How many people who've seen Dazler's "Cartoon Today" think it would be cracking on the 7650?
