Can the SX1 support SD?

I have tried it with two different brands, the phone found the card and even let me format it but then it tells me that there is a dammaged/faulty sc-card inside.

Sounding to me more like... SD support is a Firmware issue, and would be available sometime in the future if Siemens Marketing feels it's important enough.

as the post said before the phone I/O has 9 pin, then try shielding the extra pin on the SD to see if this can be the trick to make it work??

Hey, people. I'm from Melbourne, Australia & have been trying out a number of SD cards in my SX-1 over the past week or so. So far, i've come across no SD cards which work :frown: . The following brands have been tested...

Panasonic,
Secure Digital,
Kingston,
Fuji,
PQI,
Dick Smith,
& a couple of others which have escaped me.

Unfortunately, MMC cards are harder to find down here, especially those with capacities over 256MB. SD cards, on the other hand, can be found everywhere with capacities up to 1GB. The SDs' are also cheaper & since they are less power-hungry, they are a MUCH better option to MMC.
:frown:

What I want to know is, is support for SD only a firmware away? I mean, is it possible for a device like the SX1 to support a technologically different format just by having its' firmware updated???

It is not a firmware-/software-only issue, but also a hardware issue (the SD reader/slot/wiring/eletronics is different, but compatible with MMC).

If the hardware already supports SD, then it could be just a software issue.

I don't know whether the SX1 has an SD capable memory card slot or just MMC.

I beleive it's just a firmware issue... The MMC slot on the SX1 has nine pins (Ala an SD also compatible interface) Don't know many MFG, who would add a more costly interface to there hardware design for no reason.

Also leaks here and there have suggested that some service centers had a firmware version that supported SD Cards, since then Siemens has removed support. Maybe because other issues are at the top of the list.

I for one would love the choice to be able to use the lower power consuming, cheaper cost in some markets, SD cards.

well, you'd have to trim a lot of the CF to make it fit, then the pinnout is different.

Enf...

thanks a lot and i want to know whether while firmwares benefit sx1 it causes some problems

Sorry, had to get that off my chest. 95% of the posts on this thread were excellent and well-written, informative, etc about the SD/MMC compatability issue. Thanks guys. But a few posts like "all other devices support both of them. - because of this nobody buys theese old mmc and goes with the better and meanwhile cheaper sd's". All other devices? Which other devices that are cell phones and do as much featurewise as the SX-1? I can think of a very select few, but not "all other devices". Why don't you go buy one of those "other devices" than if the MMC vs SD issue is so trying for you? 🙄

Bug, did you read through the compatibility thread on this forum before you posted? Or do a search through the archives? If so, then I think you would have seen that this question has been answered, ad nauseum.

If you had read the hardware compatibility thread you would have seen that I posted (with pictures and a description) that the 1GB ATP MMC that I bought on ebay works in my SX-1, and I paid $105 US. The guy is still selling them, although regretfully, he only ships to US or Canada. However I have had good luck on ebay with simply emailing sellers explaining my interest in an item, citing my 100% positive feedback, and asking if they'll ship to me if I pay for international shipping. I have done this many times for car parts from Germany and 9 out of 10 sellers are helpful and willing to accomodate me. If any of you find that you still cannot get a large capacity (512 or 1GB) MMC where you are located in the world, I would be willing to help you get one through one of these ebay auctions at no charge. Just cause I'm a nice guy.

Here's the link to the auction for the 1GB MMC.

1GB MMC on ebay, no affiliation with the seller

Also, this guy is selling 1GB SD cards and they are the same price, $95. Which means they're now $10 cheaper than when I bought mine two weeks ago, ARGGHH!! So the argument that SD is cheaper than MMC seems to be untrue. As for speed, I'm not a hardware electrical-engineering expert so I can't answer that. The 1GB MMC seems great for mp3's and what I use it for.

near my house, here in spain the 512Mb mmc cost 51 and the 1GB 104

Hmm perhaps ppl will also try to talk about which SD card does work for the sx1? My brother has a 128mb sandisk SD card and it didnt work on my phone :'(
OH and btw.. MMC cost about 44 euros here in NL :P (sd are 40 euros)
