Just got a 6600 from Orange.

It is busy charging at the moment, but I would like to ask what this software on the mmc is all about?
Is any of it useful? Does it double up on any of the phones default software?
Can I uninstall it easily if I don't like it?
The videoplayer, is that the nokia one I put on my 7650 or is it another?

Sorry to ask so many questions but I have searched and not found out much.

TIA

Since I (and probably many others) don't have a 6600 from Orange, why not simply list what software you have on the MMC and we who might know the software, but don't know what Orange put on the MMC might be able to help.

Anything not in the ROM you can uninstall with the "Manager" app on the phone. Or simply delete the files from the file system, if that doesn't work for some reason or another (but then you need to know what you're doing so as not to delete something you shouldn't).

Thanks, I know my way around the OS as I have had a psion for years, but in a post I found in a search someone said they had difficulty in uninstally one of the programs.
If you don't have the phone from orange I don't know if you will have the software as it seems Orange specific., but here is the list anyway:
'Backup and Update' (I thought the phone had a backup function built in anyway)
'Packet Video' (the phone already has a video recorder on the ROM)
There is also a using your phone feature, other than this I can't tell you as to access all this and browse it you have to install the browsing bit of the software.

TIA

It is not on the phone until you install it from the mmc, an Orange logo appears in the menu, click on it and it asks if you want to install the software.
I may try it later as I don't have any thing on the phone yet, if it is crap I can do a factory reset.

the orange software is useless. it basically only takes you onto their wap site to download software, ringtones etc...
i deleted it on my first night with my 6600. deleting it saves valueable space.

That was the plan anyway 😊
Having a little trouble with it at the moment, the 7650 PC Suite was akward to setup, but this one it acting differently, can sychronise but not backup. Time to search the forums.

Conclusion: The backup program backsup exactly what PC Suite and the nokia program does, exept it does it to an Orange server and uses up GPRS usage.
The Updater gives you access to some free multimedia when it is realeased and also updates the Orange video program.
The Orange Video program is only useable on the Orange wap site, I don't think that there is any content available for it else where, I have never downloaded that much from O wap anyway, btu you have the nokia video recorder/player and realplayer so why another one?
I n't need any of it, time to reformat the phone and get on with putting all my settings on it.

I think this thread is over now. :icon14:

It's my first night with my 6600 (after over a year with a 7650) and I installed the Orange app out of curiosity. After a few minutes I realised it was crap (and annoying, keeps bringing up a connection popup every few minutes) and wanted to uninstall it. Went to the manager app and nothing was in the list, although if you select 'View Log' you can see 'Orange 1.02 installed'. So I can't get rid of the damn thing! Any suggestions?

If you backed up the phone to the memory card using the memory application before you transfered all the Orange software over (even if you didn't), you can do an operator reset or more likely a soft format of your phone to erase the memory on the phone. This SHOULD load the default orange firmware from the ROM when you restart the phone, then you just have to fix your access points, etc (switch messaging to the mmc instead of the phone because that's the one major pain for restores). Before you do a reset of the phone backup whatever you have using the memory application on the phone so if you don't get back the factory stuff you can restore the phone memory from the mmc.

Thanks. Did the soft format (as hadn't had it long enough to put anything on it work backing up yet) and that toasted it. Got rid of the Orange icon too. Fortunately it did restore the access point info and answer phone number, etc.

Cheers, Jason, for the pointer on setting messaging to the MMC. I'm sure i'll get used to having the extra space soon enough 😊

To be fair, while most of it is crap, the Backup facility isn't bad - it backs up selected items (I use it for 900+ Contacts and my Calander) to Orange servers over GPRS.

I hope I never have to use this, as it's synced with my PC at work most days - but it's a nice peace of mind. As for the rest, I'd agree it's not worth much.
