Thanks to the releases of Ogg Vorbis Controller, a plugin for Symbian's Multimedia Framework, its now possible to use Ogg Music files on your 6600 phone (or any other Series 60 2.0 phone - such as the 7610). Ogg Vorbis Controller allows the decoding and playing back of Ogg Vorbis compressed audio files. It allows any application which uses the multimedia framework to play back these files.
The sis file provided on the release page includes a recogniser so that ogg file will be recognised and played by the Recorder program built into the phone. The recogniser will also mean that ogg files are included in the drop down list that appears when selecting ringtones (e.g. in the Contacts application when specifying a unique ringtone for a contact).
I install these file, but i can test it... i send a various Ogg files to my phone but i can ear nothing... when i play a ogg file nothing sound... :'(
Any help?
This is great, recognition files without having to download a player as well. I installed this last night and have converted several mp3 and played them quite successfully.
I converted a whole song first but ended up just taking short 15 to 30 second segments out to use as ring tones. I will look through my rather large sound effect collection later for some sounds to use as message alert tones 😃
I have used Roxio sound editor and dBpoweramp to convert to OGG, I use 64kps and mono.
This is going to give me lots of fun.
ok thats great but is there one for mp3 ??? would be even cooler 😃
I was thinking that myself but then I thought OGG or MP3? It doesn't really matter for this sort of thing. If your S60 has a stereo output then OGG is supposed to be a better format anyway, or just convert.
what about ogg plugin for 36XX ???
i just wanna hear my oggs as ringtones !!!
I have same problem too, it installs successfully but when I play it nothing sounds..
I tried 16 kHz mono and 44.1 kHz stereo, both cannot be played.
Using OggPlay they can be played successfully.
What's may be wrong...??
Maybe a firmware compatibility problem. I installed this first time and and had success straight away with no tweaking of the phone or OGG encoding.
My firmware is 3.49.2
I have a 6600 running on older firmware and my phone detects ogg files as ringtones and also in recorder. When I assign an ogg file as a ringer in profiles the sound plays and it also vibrates. Problem is that when someone actually calls, the phone doesn't vibrate if using an ogg file and just plays the ogg file. Anyone else experienced this? If I assign a normal tone everything works fine.
As the site says, this is only an example of what can be done and obviously hasn't been fully tested.
Maybe someone can give the programmer feedback to work on or pick up the code provided and prgress it further for more compatibility?
Relating to message above. I have tried to find out how to give feedback but haven't had any luck how to contact the programmer. Any ideas?
Well I wouldn't use the above link for contacting the programmer of the plugin, that is just for the OGG vorbis music codec, it is not really their resposibilty to help get the plugin working on a S60 mobile.
The page that the codec comes from says,
Author: Mathew Inwood, Multimedia Porting Group, Licensee Product Development, Symbian
So I guess you can contact him through the links on this page:-
Symbian Developer Support I hope that helps.

I have this problem too...but with the firmware 4.09.1 when i select a file .ogg as ringtones the nokia 6600 not ring and not vibrate when i receive a call....
Hi, i`m pranay! I want to know what did you do to let your cell to recognise ogg files as ringtones.
Please tell me or forward me the files at .
I want to do the same! And how to install coz there are so many files.
I dont know how to instal and wat to install.
Hello,
If you look at the first message in the thread and click on the link for the Ogg Vorbis Controller, look on the new page that opens and click on the link that says installation file. Tranfer to your phone using either email, infrared or bluetooth and install from there.
I hope that helps.
Hey all, first post here :icon14:
Would really like to get this working!
I stumbled across this thread from google as i was having problems myself with using ogg's as ringtones.
I installed oggplay which i think let me choose oggs from the ringtone menus in profiles. The only problem was when i had an incoming call/message no sound is played. Altho i can hear the sound when you preview the ringtone by hovering over it for a while.
I just installed this codec to see if that would work, but to no avail 😞
Whos got this working so far? because if i need to get a more uptodate version of the 6600 i might be able to as it doesnt recognise the memory card ne more so could get a replacement :frown:
thanks all 😃

As mentioned previously in this thread, there may be compatibility problems with newer firmware versions, I have never tried Oggplay so I don't know what the problem could be there.
This thread is about the Ogg Vorbis Controller plugin that allows the inbuilt player/recorder to play Ogg files and therefore allow the phone to use them as ring tones. If the inbuilt player/recorder won't play them then I think you have problems.
I am not very helpful in diagnosing problems with this because I installed it and it worked straight away, no troubles, but as I stated earlier the page which the plugin is downloaded from says that it hasn't been fully tested on all handsets and it seems to have just been a programming exercise.
Thanks for the reply 😊
Im not saying that im having trouble playing the ogg files at all, its when someone rings me that i have a problem. They wont play only at that point.
I was only using the oggplay as an example, im currently having no problems playing oggs with it.
I can play the oggs in the recorder so there isnt a problem their either.
I can only see one problem, and that being that oggplay is conflicting with the ogg controller. I might try a factory reset and c if it works then!
EDIT - just had a thought also, it might be the encoder im using. Its called power mp3 wma ogg.... converter so it might be unhappy with the files its producing. What other programs have u lot been using?
Hi All,
Ogg Vorbis Controller plugin doesn't work with new firmware - 4.09.1.
To check yur firmware press *#0000#
I'm having some trouble getting the Ogg Vorbis Controller to install on my N-Gage. When I run the installer, it tells me that it's not compatible with my system. I'm running firmware version 3.42, and the OS version is 6.1. Is there anyone out there that has had a similar experience or knows how to help me fix this?
I have the same problem on my SX-1 (fw 12), incompatible, cant install it... is there another way to use Ogg as ringtone?
Of course it won't work.Its designed for Series 60 2.0 devices.Try reading threads for a change 😉
Well, acctually, most other progs for 6600 works on my SX-1, so I guessed this one would to!
i just got my 7610 last friday and im having the same problem
the ringtone page lists all of the ogg files and even plays them to "preview" them
i can select them as ringtones but when a call actually comes in - nothing - i get silence
its really weird - i installed the ogg vorbis controller as well as oggplay - the files play beautifully through oggplay and through the 7610's own media player
but the problem is in the ringtones - you can preview and choose them but when someone ACTUALLY CALLS - that's when i get the silence...
anyways - if anyone could figure out what the problem is - there would be a lot of happy people 😊
btw - my firmware is:
v 4.0421.4
22-05-07
rh-51
by the way - if someone has access to the email address of the developer - i would be happy to email him/her myself...
Has anyone tested this on 6620 or 6000 yet?
