First impressions of my new Sendo X

I have been waiting for this phone since November and when it finally came out I decided to buy it despite people saying it was very buggy. When I got it the first thing I thought was that it looks so much better than in the pictures and so much smaller! Build quality seems very good. Anyway I decided to write down some of the good and bad points about it while keeping a note of all bugs so that I can send them to Sendo. At the moment there is a lot of negative stuff on this forum, which simply isnt fair for such a good phone. Stuff that might put off future buyers, so I have compiled a balanced summary of the pros and cons.

Good Points:

-Stereo loudspeaker sound is a dream; I can play MP3s at a quite high volume and still get excellent sound quality. The speakers are unbelievably good for the size of the unit! I have tried a phone call on loudspeaker and it seems to work extremely well.

-Display is excellent, perfectly visible even in the bright sunlight. I have it on the Ultra Bright setting.

-Voice recognition is not going to be my most used feature, but even so it is really good works with no training for everyone I have tried it with.

-I thought the Image editor would be really poor, but it is actually brilliant. So many possibilities; however I would like to be able to add my own icons and frames and stuff.

-I was told that the flash was only a crappy LED, however it is so bright. My Sendo X flash is so much brighter than my brothers Samsung E710.

-Now! Screen is brilliant. Very useful indeed.

-Quite stable - no crashes so far. However, some minor lock ups have occurred.

-Camera and camcorder viewfinder is really quick and smooth.

-I have read that RF reception was poor and had problems, however I would say that it is better than my SL45i (which always seemed to have very good reception). I have had no problems yet, hopefully that wont change!

-Supplied headset has a volume control on and sounds fairly good.

-Messaging is very good; when sending to multiple people it just queues them up and sends them in the background. If there is no signal it schedules them to be sent later.

-Battery life seems very good (I have not run it completely down yet), and indicator so far seems very reliable.

-Little additions like the converter and document viewers are so useful.

-Bluetooth works very well. USB cable and software also seem very good.

Bugs/Problems:

-Camcorder function has a really poor frame rate no matter which settings are chosen. At first I thought it might be the realone player, but I watched on my PC and the audio is terrible and the frame rate is very choppy. This needs to be fixed.

-An annoying problem is that the backlight takes about 2 seconds to come on after pressing a button. I really hope they fix this!

-Sometimes when multitasking the music comes out really horrible and distorted. Seems to be at random times, and is very infrequent. The way to fix it is to pause the MP3 player and then un-pause.

-Some noises are still played in silent mode (like changing profile tone)

-MP3 player shuffle system isnt very good; I always get them in the same order!

-When multi tasking and playing mp3s the music is constantly interrupted although only for a small time normally. I was hoping the SoniX chip would sort this maybe in a firmware upgrade then

-Once you restart the phone it seems to ask me if I want to copy SIM contacts to the phone memory every time I go into contacts. Also the phone lock code resets as does the lock status.

-It needs Airplane mode; so you can use it to either free up memory or for hospitals/planes. I was allowed onto Thomas Cook airlines with my SL45i because I took the SIM out. I dont see why this phone doesnt have Airplane mode.

-Some of the help files dont match up like help says there should be a contrast setting under display, but there isnt.

-The PTT button on the stereo headset doesnt do anything while the MP3 player is active. My SL45i used to pause/play on a push, and if you held it down it would skip to the next song. That was very useful.

-Oggplay doesnt work

Does anyone else have these problems?

Overall I would say it is an excellent phone; scoring 8/10 and hopefully with some of these problems fixed it will score 9 or even 10. Top notch - Sendo really put a lot of effort into it, and it shows!

mart_is_good wrote:Actually I do have one question: how do I use a wav file as my ringtone? Where do I put it??

C:\Nokia\Sounds\Digital. :icon14:

Where did you get it from?

You dont even need to be specific where you save the wave, simply send the wav to the handset via BT or IRDA, it will then appear as a text message. Opening it will cause recorder to open. Listen to the wav, then save using recorder, and it will be availble in the ringtone section!

The X checks three file locations for ringtone compatible files:
C:\Nokia\Sounds\Digital
Z:\Nokia\Sounds\Digital
Z:\Nokia\Sounds\Simple

However, you can only save to the first one.
😊

Delta737 wrote:Are you sure it is not C:\SENDO\Sounds\Digital

Yes it's Nokia, not Sendo. As Nokia were the first ones out with a S60 handset, and various third party applications used that file system in their programs, we kept to that standard too. The Siemens SX1 does the same.

Thanks for the help on the ringtones, now just gotta choose which tone!

Got it from http://www.pixmania.co.uk for 298 including VAT & Delivery. Only problem is that it comes from Paris so therefore has a Euro plug charger. Had to buy an adapter for 5.

-Oggplay doesnt work

Would it be possible to have more details why oggplay doesn't work? What happens, do you see splash screen, etc...
What is the OggPlay SW version you tried to run?
It *should* work, but nobody ever tried, I'm afraid. Perhaps you could PM me OggPlay log, I can take a look at it. To make log, create a directory C:\logs\OggPlay. Run Oggplay, and a log should appear there.
Thanks, on behalf of OggPlay developpers !

Yep sure 😊

It installs fine and then opens fine. I tell it in the settings to look in E:\Ogg only. I put one file in there to test. It finds it fine. I tell it to play and it just sits there, noting happens - no sound or counter movement. It seems to do a sort of crash at this point. If I just leave it I can press exit and it exits. However if I try to multitask with it trying to play I get an 'App Closed' Message after a bit of a slow down in the phone. So in short, it opens but cannot play.

Here is the log if you choose exit when playing fails (no crash):

Regarding OggPlay. I have spent some more time trying to get it working. And I actually got some sound out of it. You have to pause then unpause to get any sound out. It is quite unstable though. Often it quits while playing and multitasking with no error mesages. The music stops and when holding menu OggPlay has gone from the list. So I assume it crashed and was closed.

There is some hope then 😊 I think it should be fairly easy to get it working. But, the multitasking thing looks a little bit desesperate, since even the built-in Mp3 player seems to have hard time...
PS Mart, I have PM you a special package with more traces. Hope I can get some fresh new traces 😊

My brother got himself a Siemens SX1 and I have used it quite a bit now. I would say Sendo X is definitely better.

SX1 Plus Points:

-Multitasking while playing music is much better. There are very few interruptions, but the catch is that the rest of the applications run slow. This is how it should be.

-SMS character counter

Sendo X Plus Points:

-Camera frame rate is much better. SX1 feels very slow in comparison! The graphiX chip really works!

-Better shape and size, SX1 is too wide I think. Side keys are very usable though once you get used to them.

-Much better loudspeaker system and there are two of them!

-The flash really is good. The SX1 does have night mode, but the flash really makes this camera usable in the dark.

-Battery life of the Sendo X is so much better than the SX1!

-The SX1 has so little internal memory it is a joke! Installation of loads of stuff has to be done on MMC, which is not as convenient.

-I prefer the Sendo X joystick (well navi keys or whatever). The SX1 joystick is not as easy to use, especially when you hands are a bit wet.

a friend of mine owns the sx1, too. i'm wondering what he'll say, when i'll show the sendo x to him.

A couple of questions on the X,

1. Does the X allow the user to zoom in and out of the display like the old Psions used to?

I guess what I mean is, does it allow you to switch to a smaller font so you can see more info on the screen? I am particularly interested in the Calendar and Contacts.

2. Is there a "find" function which allows the user to search contacts by all the fields in the database? On my psion I often search by phone number, company, or for a string in the note field.

Thanks.
