6630 Review.

33 replies · 6,203 views · Started 19 December 2004

Alright, I'm on vacation. Got off of Gulf Air's First Class seat (which is quite nice if you're stuck on picking an airline) at Bahrain, went home, and a shiny 6630 lay there in front of me.
Oooooh, Aaaaah, GIMME I screamed.
Opening the box, I was a bit disappointed that there was no dock included, but I didn't care.

I ripped open all of the plastic and put my sim in and turned the phone on. (I didn't charge it even though I should have)

Switching it on I see a SMOOTH Nokia logo and a realistic animation of the shaking hands.

and off we go.

Specs:
10 MB internal memory, 64 mb DV-RSMMC card (more info on that later), 3G, EDGE, light sensor, a 1.3 Megapixel camera, and updated processor (faster than any other phone (even the 9500))

Screen: 65K TFT screen
System: Series 60 Symbian V.8
Sound: One large speaker on the top of the phone (bit different)

Again I apologize if the pictures are not as clear as they should be.

What you get:

In the box you get the battery, a headset (looks iPod like), a Sync CD, Sync cable, charger, battery cover, a memory card (64mb) and a manual.

The CD includes various apps that are already installed on the phone or available on the nokia website.

Below are a few pics of the phone.

The keypad, although chubby looking, is quite slim. Furthermore, pressing the buttons is great! Its soft and doesn't have that rigid feeling that Nokia phones usually do.

The shape of the phone isn't exactly to my taste, my main reasoning for getting the phone is because it works with 3G networks and I dont want to use any of the current phones on the UK market.

Note: The button you see has to functions. Pressing and holding allows you to use voice activated calls and pressing it while in a call activates the recorder.

The recorder is clearer than any phone I have ever used (Of course I am comparing Nokia's together). Playback while in a conversation is also clear.

Now judging by the pics, you might say "that phone is one huge (insert any word here)" So I've supplied a comparison photo.

Note: As you can see, it's almost the same size as the 7610, if not a bit smaller (heigh wise at least).

One point to add though, is that using some functions on the phone with one hand is a bit tricky for me. I've got small hands so it may just be me, but I have a bit of trouble pressing the edit and clear keys while writing a message since it's a bit low on the keypad and reaching for it throws off the phones balance.

Sound Quality on the phone is great. Noticabley better than the 7610 at least. It may be due to the fact that it is position at the top of the phone, or that it's bigger. Playing back load songs doesn't give a screeching sound like the 7610.

Video:
Since it runs series 60 and is a Nokia, it comes with Realplayer as usual and there are a TON of apps to allow any type of playback. If you've got a large enough memory card, then great, you can watch some High quality video's.

Speaking of memory cards though, Nokia have done something that really makes me angry. I pulled out my 7610's 256 RSMMC memory card and plugged it in (with a smile in my face thinking that I was smart for buying one). That smile slowly faded into an angry fit.
Why didn't it work?! So with a bit of reserach I discovered that it accepts on the DV version (Dual Voltage) Basically, it's the same card but it uses less power, thus saving the phone power.
It's in my opinion that this is a software restriction, so hopefully someone will come along.

The keypad lighting is not that bad, nice and white. As mentioned, the phone has a light sensor. If t's bright, it doesn't light up and the screen is dimmed. This is a great feature since it saves battery time. I haven't figured out how to switch it off yet though.

I wont comment on the features since they are as any other Series 60.
There are a few improvements since it's V8 like a 3d Rotating picture view.

It's also faster than all of the other phones, meaning you dont need to load up a menu.

I'm hoping I can set up the content to work on 3 but I wont know til i get back to England.

If anyone has any questions please let me know! I'll be happy to answer!

Actually, the first round with my 6630's battery was over like one night stand - wham bang thank you ma'am. After power failure shutdown new charge overnight and now It's been 7 on the battery (max) two days. If you needlessly use the BT it'll wear out the battery quite fast.

thanks for the compliment.

To be honest at first my battery was lasting 5 hours. I couldn't understand why. Then I discovered i had the Caribe virus!!! (which drains your battery like crazy because it nags the Bluetooth connection)

I cleaned it with Decaribe.

So far it's lasted almost 3 days on a full charge. 2 cells left.

Is the loudspeaker volume (either while listening to Mp3s or on a phone call) louder on the nokia 6630 than on a 7610? If so, how much louder?

its looks verry nice
6630 was my first choice
but im going windows mobile now
but its a great review
nice :icon14:

how come u got the virus??u just got the phone, and btw on the back of the phone say made in finland(i have TIM brand too)so is ok is not MADE BY NOKIA(means hong kong or china)

Yeah, really great review. But few questions;

As ants337 asked, how is the loadspeaker volume (I don't think I have to ask for the crystal sound of the the headset sound)

It seems to have a bit larger screen than the 7610's, do I see wrong or is it really a bit larger?
And unfortunatelly I think that normal RS-MMC compatibility wouldn't be solved by a software, it must be something to do with hardware.

Can you post a few pictures taken with 6630 by the way?

The speaker is louder and doesn't have a screeching sound on max volume like the 7610.

The screen is the exact same size just TFT.

I think the memory card is software related, look at the P900, it couldn't accept Pro Duos', Flash it with the 910 firmware and it can.

In this case, the voltage is just different, so the phone is restricted from accepting a higher voltage (this is just my opinion though)

As for pics by the phone go to my newly launched personal review site.
www.oxygen-inc.com/mobile

hope that helps 😊

i SO wanted this phone(6630) after i have been using 7650 for a long time. but if people are having so many problems already (judging by the amount of posts of problems on this forum section)

i dont know if nokia is going to come up with a better 3g phone any time soon?
so where does this leave us? 🙄

So what's the difference when its TFT?
I don't really know much about these stuff.
And it really looks a bit bigger. I know it has the same pixel size 178x208 or it was something like that. But it just seemed bigger. Anyway, I'm really curious about TFT stuff...

My phone is giving me 30 hours max on standby. I'm not even using the phone for anything and i mean anything. Changed the battery to see if that was the problem. Next battery only lasted 24 hours. They have all been on the full charge and empty run three times as is normal. I am at a loss as to the reason. I am permanently in a 3g area if that is the problem.

This is caused by the fact, that the standby time in 3G and GSM is very different. In the GSM it can be 5 days, but in 3G only one day,or 30 hours.
The phone needs more energy if it works in 3G. 🙄
i know about that, because people from one server tested this in 3G in Polland, and the phone worked for only 2,5 hours while browsing the web. 😃

Awwwww, I really, really thought my phone was faulty. This news makes me sadder than ever.

danidanidani wrote:Awwwww, I really, really thought my phone was faulty. This news makes me sadder than ever.

sorry, but thats the reality... but there is the other side:I live in country, when there is GSM with GPRS and EDGE,but there will be no UMTS before 2006 and i have my 6630,but i cant use it in 3G /never mind, that its only for 30 hours standby,or 2,5 hours of work/,but the 3G experience is more important.
But maybe once,or twice, but for everyday use,hmm.... but iam not able to compare 🙄

@dan,
I put in my 3 sim at the moment and left it in an area where there is no coverage for 3g or 2g, the phone switches between the two to search, I got 34 hours before it went dead.

I think it's due to the fact that when it switches it drains the battery.
Is it possible that your phone moves back and forth?
On a permanent 3g signal the phone should last 2-3 days to be honest with at least 5 hours talk time.

any one got any suggestions?

Honestly after using this phone for more than a month I wouldn't say it has so many problems; it has several limitations and it implements some questionable design choices (i.e. rs-dv-mmc). What problems are you referring to?

Standby by time is different in GSM and UMTS,this fact we all know.Because its a dual mode phone,it is always trying to find the best service, and it switches between 3G and GSM.This switching is killing tha bettery and the standby time is better a bit,if it is always in the same service /GSM,or UMTS/,but the stadby time and talktime in 3G is nothing amazing, its wrong if we compare it with times in GSM.
For exapmle:i acm charging my phone once a week and iam using it frequently /only at night is turned off for some hours/ 😃

My only problem with this device is the absence of 3G in my country 😃 i have bought mine on the 16th November, and iam very satisfied, pictures are perfect, the device is fast enough.Only 4-5 restarts during more than a month. 😊

the problems people are having with 6630. which are already posted on this forum.

Have a look at the other forums, all devices have problems.

You won't find a phone that doesn't have some, and to be honest alot of them are caused by us playing with them 😉

All I can say is....this is by far the best series 60 device I have owned, I've had a 7650, N-gage, 7610.

The 6630 is faster, has a great camera, ok the battery could last a little longer, but maybe thats the trade-off for having 3G.

Ok so will have to wait a bit for some huge memory cards, but lets face it tiger03 if your still using a 7650 it got tons more memory.

Be thankful you are not in a 3g country. As your batter life of charging once a week will be on once every 30hrs. Thats the amount of hours i get on standby, i repeat standby alone in a 3g zone.

So what does the light sensor exactly do?

(and what was the difference of being TFT no one answered my question)

light sensor adjust light,if it is neccessary 😃 try to go from the dark to the light place and vica versa and you will see, what it is able to do 😃

hm,iam thankful for the GSM standby time,but... There are many countries in my near neighbourhood, where there is a 3G.
Austria-3 operators have 3G,Polland-3G available in warsaw, and so on...
iam sad,that i have to wait for 3G to 2006 🙄
i would like to know more about 3G experiences in real life . . . 🙄
speed of connection, videocallings, and many other things about 3G from someone, who tried it in a real life 😃

Its in permanet 3g but with only one bar always on the phone. I dont see it switching. I'm off to the sisters who lives otherside of London. I will check to see how many bars i get there and how long before phone goes dead. As its fresh off the charger this morning (24Dec 10am) and report back here.

Hi,
I live in Slovenia and I have same experiences in "real" with 3G (as we already have it too 😉 ).

Lets see: speed of connection Ive reached is between 30-43 kB/s. Its not bad!
Videocalling works fine, but depends on light conditions. In "normal" light it is ok.
I live in place, where almost all of the time 3G reception is good and Ive got standby time between 1,5 - full 4 days! 1,5 day standby time means I use the phone for varial things almost all the time (exept at night 😉 )

Till now Ive had some problems with PC software and sinchronization but I solved them and Im very pleased with the phone for now.

If youd like to know anything else, just ask 😉

thanks a lot.... it look like, that the standby time is not so bad.... which operators have 3G in Slovania ? I live in Slovakia /Slovak Republic/and here is only GSm with EDGE and GPRS,but no UMTS at the moment....

iam very interested in 3G and as we say in ou country-its better to see,an hear 100 times 😃 would you be so kind, and post some pictures /as i know there is an applications, which is able to take you current screen, wallpaper, and so on/,because i want to see the 3G icon on the screen, and the other visible differences between using in GSM and UMTS.... i will be very happy,if you do so 🙄
