this would be a handy little feature; but in my phone the button turns on/off the 'speaker phone' (or whatsit called). so how did you get yours to activate the recorder?

That is odd!
Mine records, and on the screen the right softkey says Speaker!

Is yours TIM? maybe it's preset

the light sensor senses the level of light around it. If it's bright, the keypad is switched off, if its dark, it turns on.

mine isn't branded (by operator) at all. the right soft key has the same function also, si it is kind of redundant..

there's no way of changing the function of that side button through the options, so i'm thinking it's an operator branding thingy: is yours branded?
