Guest posting bastards

Just deleted between 10-20 posts from some spamming twat who decided it would be fun to pick threads at random and post his links with gay abandon. Ip address was 208.158.164.11

Yep, nothing new about that. I think we should just stop deleting guest spam and leave it all for Rafe and Ewan. Maybe then they will come to their senses and disable guest posting once and for all. 😉

And what will stop people that determined just registering, psoting away, and we still have to delete. Oh that's right, the IP block...

...if this didn't stop the spamming on My-Symbian, why would it stop the flooding on All About Symbian?

I agree it's aproblem, and trust me I sit and delete during the day as well - but I think it's something that comes with the territory of being the biggest board.

Of course making users register before they can post wont completely erase the problem, but it will certainly diminish the problem. You will also get the opportunity to ban the user before it gets out of hand.

Can you please explain to me just why it is so important to still have guest posting enabled? I don't get it.

I actually have diabled guest posting (same time I did some fourm arrnaging a day or two ago) on a few forums on a temporary basis to see if it makes any difference.

Rafe

That'll probably be why it was only in the news, waffle, and dev forums then. Just a pain, everytime I delete one there were another 2.... git. Makes me wanna bitchslap the person posting.

this is a longshot & i don't really know what i'm talking about so correct me if i'm wrong about anything.

would it not be possible to set the forums so that any guest posts/threads must go to the moderation section in the moderator control panel for validation before appearing on the forums?

i know that it would be time consuming to validate every guest post but i personally wouldn't mind doing it as i think it's part of the responsibility i've been given as a moderator.

i'm sure alot of you won't agree with the idea but it's just a thought.

This sounds reasonable for me as well. Luckily, there hasn't been that many "bad" postings in the Series 80 part.

UIQ is pretty clean too, I think it mainly concentrates on Series 60.

Anyway, it is not a bad idea! Although I won't be here all day everyday, so maybe, just maybe we're gonna need more mods if we want this...

I'll have a look into this.

Delta is right more mods would probably be a good thing. Let me know if you have any recommendations

I for one don't think it is a good idea at all. First of all, it would mean even more work than having to delete 20 posts a day, much more work. Second of all, what's the point? It only takes a few seconds to register and then post, but with moderators filtering the posts it might take a few hours before the post is published. I don't get why anyone would want to go through hundreds of posts a day just so someone can post something like: "heY!!!!1 wAzzzzzuup how u aLL dooooin!!!!!???!" anonymously.

Yeah it's a fair point. I'm not sure moderation is the way to go either. Hmm need to think about what to do.

i knew my suggestion would cause a little controversy but i tend to agree with Delta737. most of the problem seems to be centred around the series60 forums. would it not be possible to put the restrictions on to targeted forums/sub-forums?

as to the amount of daily posts, does anyone know the average number of daily guest posts in the series60 forums?

According to a search, 107 threads were active in the last 24 hours, i don't know how many posts. Lets say double to be on the safe side. Bear in mind we are moderating only guest posts, and i don't know how many they account for so lets assume 25-50%, so you are looking at an approximation of 50-100 posts a day to verify.

I guess then that it would be safe to say that if my suggestion could be implimented then there wouldn't really be that much of a workload for moderation?
