Browser can't open web pages using Java script or Frames ?

If this is correct, my chances of buying a P800 have just gone from probably not to zero. Very disappointing.

According to

http://www.wirelesssoftware.info/show1news.php/612.html

The P800 browser is very nice, BUT

"The browser can open web pages that does not use Java script or frames"

Symbian should do a perminant deal with Opera. They seam to have things well sorted with the 9210i

OK,

So that confirms it. The chances of me getting a P800 are now officially 0%.

Nokia, get on with it and bring out the 9310.

More memory, including executable memory.
Faster processor
Deeper screen, say 640 x 320
Latest OS version.
Add GPRS (3G would be even better)
A little slimmer (and shorter if that is possible).
a couple more screen buttons for selection.
Keep and update Opera.
Add Bluetooth/USB.
SD rather than MMC.
Some space to allow a twin sim adaptor.
Vibrating Alert.
Better FileSync. including ability to automatically sync. files.

You are forgetting about the Symbian OS's nature. Opera are producing a version of theres highly rated internet browser for the mini- OS, which should have the features you need.

more info at www.opera.com

Interesting,

So does that mean that:

Opera will need to be purchased as an Add on.
Opera will be supplied but the smartphone version does not support Javescript or frames.
Opera will be supplied and does support JaveScript and Frames but it is not reflected in the draft documentation and prototypes.
Some other variation.

(Soon to be Palm OS device user - Probably)

Nomatter what the O.S. or browser is, even if JavaScript-Flash-etc are supported, 1/4 VGA HTML web browsing will *never* be a satisfiyng experience.
This is why I think smartphones will be forever condemned to casual browsing, at least until VGA resolution is achieved.
The same goes for GPS map navigation.
Of course few will be willing to *pay* for VGA luxury by carriyng a brick device so the solution must be some kind of image/sound headphones.
Until that happens my plan is to get myself the smallest possible VGA device/PDA and use whatever mobile/smartphone as its Bluetooth/GPRS data modem.

Have you considered buying a POGO? Just over 56k speed internet access through GPRS will a full VGA display, supporting Java, scripts, forms, tables, pop ups & frames. It's also a PDA and dual band GSM mobile phone.

I checked out the Pogo. Looks quite cool, but it makes the 9210 look small. Can you imagine trying to keep that in your pocket ...

The most interesting solutions I have seen are from Sharp and BSquare. Ignoring the which OS debate etc. Oh, neither of these are on the market yet.

Note that the Sharp is not as big as it first looks. If the apps were upto the job, I'd quite like the idea of a linux PDA. Especially if it came with full blown Opera.

I still think the ultimate would be something like the 9210 but a little slimmer and narrower and with a deeper screen (320 high). This could be done if you look at the current device if they could shrink the electronics a little more. Just a matter of time.

Also, I've always fancied the idea of a very light unobtrusive head mounted display. The technology is there already. But I'm not going to be the first to walk down the street wearing this stuff 😃

I also fancy both these devices, expecially the Zaurus2003 (no oficial name yet)

Just a bit worried about how vague they both seem to be towards Bluetooth support...
Linux is getting behind on BT adoption, WinCE4.0 has BT support built-in but not sure if the Bsquare reference hardware offers BT functionallity or not. Hoppefully some OEM adopting this design could add built-in BT to it.

Of course one could allways use the expansion slot to add BT but I would need that slot for storage (maps) when doing GPS navigation with a BT-GPS.

With BT image oriented profiles beggining to appear a BT head-mounted-display is only a matter of time...

I have great hopes for Christmas... ...2004... -?

You sure? Looking at the Oct issue of the white paper, page 70 has nothing to do with browsing and i searched the rest of the doc, only to find that it says it doesn't support frames. It doesn't mention javascripts. It does mention java a lot however.

So framed pages are out (unless Opera is installed) but are javascripts?

I didn't said "Page 70 of White Papper", I said "Page 70 of USER MANUAL"
It is a completly diferent document.
You can find a link to it in another post of this same forum (FCC approval)

Where did you get the info that it is "full VGA display"?...
Acording to http//www.pogo.co.uk/design/specification.htm it is only 1/4 VGA.
For 1/4 VGA I would rather get the smaller LOOX (and get Bluetooth and SD & CF-Type2 expansion slots)

The thing that caught my eye with the LOOX, is that the Bluetooth is longer range (Class 1 I think).

So I could use it around the house as part of the network. All the other devices with integrated bluetooth have the shorter 10m range. I assume 10m becomes more like 2 to 4 meters when walls get in the way. You can get CF cards with the longer range, but that adds expense, driver questions etc.

What would be even better is if Bluetooth could be switched between the two (or automatically varied) so as to reduce power drain when you are just using it in close quarters.

The BT on the Loox is indeed capable of 100m range, but i heard that only works when the other device also has a class I BT module.
So it's not so simple as they say, and the Loox has got a lot of problems in software and hardware. (see all the forums about it).
P800 can easily compete with it! 😃

The other device would be my PC, so adding Class 1 would not be a problem. I never realised the LOOX had "problems". I'll look into it IF I decide to resort to buying a PPC.

Just for the BT range thing! I use the MSI BT Dongle and the 7650 and can be connected with a range of about 10 meters including a large hallway in my flat! Some(2) firedoors and I glass door! (I live in an apartment building) 😃 So walls are no particular problem!

OK,

So that should mean that I can use it half the house. If I could just persuade my wife to let me put the kids PC downstairs, I'd be covered 😃 .
