according to this article o2 are to launch their 3G service on 1st of Feb 2005. Initially it will only be available to Contract customers but Pay As You Go should be available soon. The new 3G services will be priced at identical rates as existing GPRS (2.5G) tariffs.

The deals dont sound so impressive. Anyone wanting the phone with the current Orange deal has only 2 days left!

it makes a nice change that the we in the (UK) will have something good ie 3G before other countries! we are usually the last to get everything! 😃

before what countries ?? there are so any countries where there is a 3G for ages and ages 😃 The Isle of Man/in 2001,now HSDPA testing/,Monaco,Japan/oktober 2001/,Austria ... and so on.
Situation in UK is good enough, for example in my country we have to wait to 3G until Q1 2006 😮
but what can i do ? only wait and believe 😃

sorry,an mistake occured.... "has been for ages and ages" 😃 its a but funny, that Vodafone launched their 3G so late.. its the greatest operator, but its not the first to use some technologies 😃
iam impressed by NTTDOCOMO 😃 they are working on 4G standards and using 3G+in the near future HSDPA 😃

vodafone are annoying in some ways ie not the cheapest & seem to disable functions on their phones ie MP3 on 6630 but i find their service very good. 😃

I would love to spend some time in japan & have NTTDOCOMO as my network providor 😃 as they seem to be at the cutting edge of technology ie with their phone models etc, 😃 can you tell me what is HSDPA? i take it its the next step fwd after 3G?

unfortunately even though 3G has launched in the uk not everyone will be able to get it. i'm in northern ireland & unless you live in derry, belfast or near the international airport you can expect to wait for around 6-12 months for the service. 🙄

HSDPA is High Speed Download Package Acces /as i remember/ and its an upgrade of the network, like EDGE for GSM,than there is HSDPA to 3G,its called the 3.5G and maybe WIMAX will be the 4G... 😃

the correct definition of HSDPA is-highspeed downlink packet access, the downlink speed is 3.6Mbit/s and the speed can be higher up to 14.4Mbit/s its supporting download of movies in DVD quality,e-mails with very big attachments 😃
now its tested in the Isle of Man 😃 for more information try to look at this:http://www.mmo2.com/media/pr_041205.asp

todays fresh news
UK: O2 moves towards HSDPA
O2's plan to build towards an all Internet Protocol (IP) digital mobile
multimedia core network has moved forward with the selection of a IP
Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). This will support roll-out of mobile
broadband delivered via super-fast 3G network based on HSDPA technology during
2005, and Group-wide in 2006.

well as i promised o2 have launched thier 3G services today. the 6630 & a few other devices are available though as expected the 3G coverage area isn't that great yet. the 6630 is also priced @ 99 whatever tarriff you choose.

yes,the coverage is maybe not great, but i think that shortly it will be and if the use the HSDPA,than ehir network be very fast

im currently using a genie sim in my 6630, but boy, i can't wait to throw in a o2 3G sim......the o2 rep for our store has said that there are some cracking payngo tariffs coming our way soon....bring it on!!! 😃

Did you get the phone unlocked yourself? I've got a 6600 which was on Orange but I unlocked it myself for my Genie contract.

you shouldn't need to change your sim. 3G should be enabled for the handset you are using & in most cases is noting to do with the type of sim. you might just have to wait for o2 to turn on 3G for pay and go customers. on the other hand, o2 may offer a different type of tarriff to deal with the video calling/data usage.

i personally wouldn't want to give up the 300 texts & for some strange reason i've had free unlimited data for the last 3 months (so far i've recieved 176.44mb's & sent 19.20mb's of data)

igary..i bought the sim free version from my work place, with the help of a nice staff idscount that carphone give...

reaper, i don't want to give up my genie sim, as, for the last 4 years, i haven't paid for anything...not gprs, or texts...of which i sent some 1500 last month and didn't pay for any of them...as for 3G...i hope they do enable current users sims for 3G...but regardless of that, i'll just buy the payandgo sim when it comes out...which will be around a tenna according to the o2 rep....either way..i can't wait...

currently, at work, i spend most of my time recommending symbian handsets to buisness users, and those who want a bit more from their handsets...ithe only problem i have is that, when i demo a handset, wheather it be the 6600, 7610 , or whatever, i get totally carried away and babble on like an old lady talking about bingo... i must remember to breeeeeeaaaatttthhhhhh..... 😃

Hey,

Where is the shop you actually work in mate?
Sounds like the one to visit for great customer service 😃

Ian

i work in bolton deansgate carphone warehouse pal....i love my job...good hours...lots of great symbian technology...and the best thing is....as soon as a new handset comes in...i get to take them home with me for up to two weeks to give the handset a thorough going over...i get average wages, but hey...i don't care...i really love my job.... 😃

Good to see that some people who work in phone shops actually know the product. I asked for a demo of a 6630 (to check if the sound was better than my 6600) in a shop the other week. The girl spent 20 mins in the back (i kid you not) then come out with a 6670 at which point i stood up.. The worst bit was the look on her face like I'd just wasted her time!

we all know its a mans world gary...women have no place in phone shops... 😃 lol...of course, im just joking...but seriously...as a consumer myself, i expect the people who work in phone shops to know there stuff...unfortunately, on training courses for fones4u and the link, and cpw, the last thing they teach you is the actual products your selling, and the focal point of phone shops...the phones themselves...moreover, they teach you how to sell there home landline product...its hammered into you...luckily, i was very much into symbian technology, and phones in general, before i even started at cpw....but, as you know, its hit and miss with staff in phone shops...

Can you confirm that the wap works ok with the 6630. Just that I have my Netfront connected through the wap on my 6600 and it's cool. And as you know, the wap is free on Genie so it can be as slow as it wants!

gary...my version of the 6630 has the software 2.39.15, so i have no wap dial up option. just packet data..ive been told that when i get it flashed with the new software that the option will be available...as far as opera, netfront etc go, i use both opera 6.2, and netfront 3.2 through gprs...just put in proxy port n ip n ya up n away...as for my mailboxes...while i have no dialup, i go through opera and the mail2web site for opening mail..even my yahoo email... 😃

You have gprs enabled on your Genie sim? Which version is it? I've tried to get mine enabled but they want me off the contract (obviously). It's only a case of someone pressing a button somewhere.

gary. if you dial 2425 from your o2 mobile you can follow the prompts to provision your mobile for 1mb free gprs. this can take 1 month to complete & is instead of your 300 mins of dialup. all the networks are slowly trying to phase out dialup.

Is this the case for all O2 UK customers? If so, what's the catch?

I get 50 mins off peak every day which is why i'm on genie, i wouldn't swap that for anything. (if that's what you mean)

50 mins every day off peak
300 or so texts free
wap free

10 per month. Sounds reasonable to me 😮)

2425 on my phone just goes beep beep beep and hangs up anyway.
