Virgin (3G) Radio PLayer

Sydus and Virgin Radio have launched a 3G Radio Player. It allows you to stream, over the air, three Radio Stations from the Virgin network: Virgin Radio, Virgin Radio Classic Rock and Virgin Radio Groove. The software is a free download and is available for both Series 60 and UIQ. Although touted as a 3G Radio PLayer, it should be possible to get a working connection over GPRS.

It has been possible to stream Radio stations to handsets for some time via the Real Player software. However on many networks (including several in the UK) this is blocked for most users. This software should work on any network anywhere.

Bear in mind that this does involve intensive data usage (roughly 7 mb an hour). Therefore this program is going to be of most use if you are on an unlimited dataplan (such as those available in the US). Virgin say they are actively working with UK networks to encourage cheaper or unlimited data plans.

when I try and install it to the MMC on my ngage, it seems to install ok but the icon donesn't appear. Has anyone has the same problem

I installed this yesterday onto the Memory Stick of my SE. No problems.

It works well - takes a bit of time to "boot." But works well over GPRS once running.

I wish the software enabled the scroll wheel to set volume. Instead, you have to set the multimedia master volume via the touch screen with this app..

Glad I have an unlimited data plan w/ Cingular. 😊

On my Sendo X it installs fine but the icon doesn't show up 😞

That picture can't be right - the 6681 / 6682 isn't 3G!

The app will work with any packet data connection (GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA), it doesn't care. The phone in the picture is a 6681 (or it could be a 6682, too, as they look the same).

this dont work on my 6600.it installs and runs but doesnt connect to the site or whatever it gets the music from.just sticks on 'connecting...'

Must cost the earth to use regularily though. Just good for showing off the capability of the phone.

Why can't some unlimited data tariffs be made available on networks here in the UK? Would possibly drive use of GPRS and maybe 3G?

Works for about 5 mins on my 6630 on Vodafone and then the app is killed. Not just stopped or hung but exited. This is consistent every time I have used it. A limit set by V?

And it is approx 1MB in that 5 mins which equates to 12MB per hour using the built-in calc. A tad more than 7.2MB quoted everywhere.

Still a killer app for 5 minutes. 🙄

The updated sis file now works on my ngage, however it doesn't want to connect over my mrouter connection. Has anyone got the connection working over bluetooth.

Cheers

i think there is another update for s60 phones. mine got an auto update, which is pretty cool and i saw they have added connection buffering percentage etc.

i think these guys were still having problems with the ngage and 3650's, i guess the older s60 handsets, which is not being fixed. can listen to it on ngage and on my 3230....

3230: dont buy the phone. its a piece of crap. spent a lot of time trying to get it, but its totally rubbish. I guess both me and russell beattie found out the hard way :frown:
