you could try this out

www.im.shapeservices.de/

that is only messenger that works (as far as I know)
but it costs too much IMHO ($19.80 at handango). Just waiting for something
better/cheaper.

other j2me based messengers dont seem to work at all with 7650.

If you get it working can you let me know how? I am on vodafone UK and cannot seem to get it to work.

Yes, I got it working here in finland (DNA), but I am so drunk now that
I cant seem to think straight or type 😃 so I cant help you.
Sorry, maybe tomorrow (saturday evening(technically today(but I like to think its tomorrow(so I can feel better now))))
Bye 😃 😃 😃 😃

hehehe....That's about right. 😃

Have you sobered up a bit? I really want to know how you got it working.... I wish I could.

It doesnt work on O2 either in the UK.... keeps saying it cant contact the server - anyone got any ideas... I see a lot of replys to messages in these groups but nobody posts anu actual information!

Cheers,
Simon

I tried to access my Yahoo email via GPRS as well - it dont work! So I tried instead the GSM WAP settings and it does. So on O2 in the UK you can use Email on GSM WAP but not on GPRS WAP.

I have logged a call with O2 on this to find out why. I guess this is the same reason that IM+ cant access ICQ via GPRS.

I have read somewhere that you might need a GPRS connection that support TCPIP, you do have to ask yourself why O2's WAP GSM works but GPRS GSM does not.

Let u know.

Quite simply, O2's WAP and GPRS connections support WAP data only. The will not allow access to any other form of data.

T-Mobile is the only UK network, that i've found, which allows access to WAP/WEB from it's GPRS/CSD connections.

How you managed to download Yahoo mail on O2 WAP is beyond me, unless you used the O2 mail server settings or did it via the Yahoo WAP site.

Using GPRS, one user said changing the APN from wap.o2.co.uk to mobile.o2.co.uk allowed access to any sites/data. (IE: Your IM software) but it doesnt work for me 😞 The small print on the O2 site also says that inclusive GPRS allowances (check your tariff as most were updated to include at least 0.5mb of GPRS on 1/11/02) are only valid when accessing via the wap.o2.co.uk portal, suggesting that the mobile.o2.co.uk portal is charged differently, so beware. 😮

Ahhh...im like a bloody walking GPRS/O2 dictionary! 😃

Changed my APN to mobile.o2.co.uk and it works fine now, using Email via GPRS. Problem Solved.

My SIM is an Online 200, so I get 2mb free of GPRS connection, or as the brochure says Mobile Internet Access.

I guess I will see what happens!

I have IM+ working via GPRS now as well. Phew. One weird problem though, I can receive email from Yahoo! POP3 but I cant send via SMTP - nothings easy is it!

Also I need the MMS settings for O2, I was on the website the other day and could have sworn I saw them somewhere, can I find them now? No!

Anyone who want my current settings for O2 can email me on [email protected]

I have Yahoo! POP3 Inbound working and IM+ via GPRS in the UK.

Did IM+ work when you changed the APN only, or did you have to adjust any other settings?

You should be bale to send if you're able to recieve via the Yahoo servers... that is a wired one!

The MMS settings are still there, I used them yesterday. I'll have a look and post a link when i get a chance.

Well... I havnt got the phone yet... but if any of you have read my previous desperate posts... im ordering a Nokia 7650 on T-Mobile... Ive looked EVERYWHERE for info on their GPRS service.. but I havnt found it... On their website it says "they are still testing"... Is this true? Or according to previous posts it seems to work... so whats going on? Does anyone know any more on this? What kind of tarrif do i need to be on? How do I get T-Mob to get me on the GPRS service?

please please can you help me! Coz im also planning to use Intant messenger on my Mob!

Thanks in advanced for your help! 😃

Nope I just changed the APN from wap.o2.co.uk to mobile.o2.co.uk.

FYI for anybody whos thinking about it my email account at www.mailsnare.com works a treat via IMAP sending and receiving. So I have the lot working now!

All except MMS!!!!

OK, here's the latest on T-Mobile and IM+

T-Mobile do not offer GPRS yet, the official line is that they are testing it, the truth is that they are considering skipping it completely and forcing bussines and data users onto 3rd Generation tariffs Q1-2 next year. I suspect that they will relent and release it soon. It WAS scheduled for 1st Nov... so we may see it this month? I hope so....

Just to clarify, GPRS is up and running on T-Mobile, it is used to power the sending of MMS messages. You will have the T-Mobile GPRS settings installed on your 7650 when you buy it, they just won't work yet.

IM+'s developers areplanning to release the MSN & Emoticon enhanced version of IM+ at the end of next week. Lots of changes and additions are promised!

After a whole day messing about, I finally got the following working:

WAP using GPRS
Email using GPRS(IMAP4)

5. What you should see!!!

A G on the right hand side of the main screen(one with wallpaper) this means GPRS is available.

When you connect via GPRS, it changes to a G with a Box around it.

When you receive a call or SMS or make a Data call it changes to a G with a line through it.

6. Connecting.....

a) Connect to WAP in the normal way, select the bookmark with a G next to, GPRS connection should be

used,
b) Connect to your email, GPRS should be used.
c) When using IM+ select the O2 gprs Access Point.

I have tested IM+ with ICQ and it works a treat, Also, www.netsnare.net offer IMAP4 email boxed for 14$

per year, 50mb of space. Good value and it works. I was able to send photos!

Have fun. 😊

Has anyone managed to do the same for vodafone UK? I still can't get any ICQ program working and don't want to use vodafones own.

Invalid GPRS access point...

I can't really ring up O2 and ask why free acces to all data through their WAP portal isn't working can I? 😃
T-Mobile do not offer GPRS yet
Over the past month I have been e-mailing the lads and ladettes at T-Mobile alot. Phone4u and Carfone Warehouse in the UK are adamant that GPRS services are available on T-Mobile. This service will soon be stopping... I dont think they are accepting new customers for it. But when it was launched the price was:
20 a month for 10MB of data, otherwise it would be 2p for each KB used.
recently I had an e-mail from Chris at T-Mobile...this is what he had to say:
Our GPRS network is built, tested and ready for launch. We are now waiting until there are GPRS devices and applications that we believe will make a true difference to our customers. Please visit the T-Mobile website at http://www.t-mobile.co.uk where any new information about GPRS will be updated.
Since this I have not had any further info... so you never know they could spring it back on us anytime 😃 Keep your eyes and noses open! 😮

Dodgy Bob,

I was going to reply to this topic a couple of days ago but as your weren't registered I didnt bother... didnt think you'd come back!

Go to www.sonyericsson.com/uk and download the T-Mobile GPRS config to your phone. It will set it all up for you (Yes, even on a 7650 😊 )

It connects and works fine, and is charged at 2p per k/b.

-Omar

NB: the 20 - 10mb deal is the one I mentioned initialy, it was sold as the MMS package. T-Mobile still do not officialy offer GPRS connections to customers old or new. Phones 4U & CPW staff are about as well trained as a wild monkey! 😃

I meet with a T-Mobile retail support rep bi-weekly, CPW, The Link & Phones4U do not get the reps in to train staff, it is done internally, and badly IMO!

Ohhhh one other thing, GPRS won't work unless your sim is GPRS enabled. All the new one's are (to enable MMS sending) if you have an old sim ring up and ask for MMS to be enabled on your account, this will grant access to the GPRS APN.
Phones 4U & CPW staff are about as well trained as a wild monkey! 😃
hehe 😃

yeah.. thats soo true! Some guy at carfone warehouse once told me that after 3 months of using a tarrif if I want to downgrade it... I'd have to give them a further 3 months notice!!! Ignorance :-?

Well yeah... this is great! That means I can use GPRS properly on the phone... if and when I get it! :P

I was looking through the CarfoneWarehouse brochure and found the T-Mobile GPRS tarrif exactly as you and I have mentioned. Iam extremely interested in that tarrif {20 for 10MB}. but i'd like to know...
... 1) If its still available because im getting a mixed response from P4U and CFW and T-Mobile... ?
....2) If the MB's are "rolled over" to the next month if I dont use them! OR is there like a "pay as you go" way of GPRS on my tarrif {i.e. put 10MB on and once it finishes put more on etc.}... ?

thanx for the info omar! It clarifies lots of stuff! 8)

Dodgybob!

blah...blah...blah...

No worries Bob 😃

I believe the 20 deal has been stopped, as they now charge per MMS sent rather than in MB bundles. It continues for current customers, who were forced to take it out for a minimum of 4 months in order to get a free MCA-20 (SonyEricsson MMS Cam) with their T68i's.

Again, this is pure hear-say not fact but when GPRS is laucnhed officially, there will be incluse data bundles, the prices of which are anbody's guess.

Whilst mentioning this, Orange are doing unlimited WAP for 3 or 4 a month on their website for existing and new subscribers. That is a very good deal, there is confusion as to whether it is GPRS or CSD though, i'm 99% sure it wont be GPRS, and I know for a fact that it wont allow anything other than WAP access, so no good for IM+ 😞
so no good for IM+ 😞
Yeah.. that is a bummer!

... It will allow some stuff like streaming video and audi... closer to the concepts of 3G... the best solution is to have both systems running simultaneously. Have GPRS for packet switched always on data {IM+, E-Mail and WAP} and then have the CSD/HSCSD activated when you need to do a streaming app OR allow the user to chose between the two when needed...

When will they every bring all this out  We are sooo behind Japan its unbelievable 😞

Same with ADSL/Cable and Digital TV everything new... we are usually behind... but most of these things were pioneered in this country. {e.g. Digital Video Broadcasting was first developed in this country by the BBC research side, ADSL technology was first developed by BT research in this country}... but then we exported everything and opened the patents so everyone else got there stuff out quick and went ahead... while we were still wondering what the weather was going to be like tommorow! {sorry.. that doesnt make sense 😮 }

anyways... lets look to the future... one day we will get there... {by the time we're on Mars}

Dodgybob

blah..blah...blah...

P.S. Some of my facts may be incorrect but they are what I remember from a few lectures on DVB and Wireless Broadband technology by CISCO resaerch students!

Dodgybob

Hi omar_g

just a quick question. you said earlier that for gprs to work on t-mobile MMS needs to be activated but t-mobile dont have MMS they just have picture messaging. shall i subscibe to that?

Thanks in advance

😃

Yep!

MMS, Picture messaging, Photo Messaging & Media messaging are all the same thing. 😃
