Firmwareupdate failed?

29 replies · 4,439 views · Started 20 March 2005

Hi there,

got recently my SendoX and made the last FW update. I am not sure if following was caused by this new firmware or if my phone is broken.

The (brandnew) battery is lasting for maximum 8 hours. What I figured out is that inside/behind the window for the IR port permanently a red LED is on. I am not sure but I think this was not like this before, so I assume the update is bad or my phone is broken. Or is it normal that this LED is always on and my problem is somewhere elese? Unfortunately I live in Brazil, I don't know anybody who has the same phone since this modell was not sold here.

Wish I could help you sir. You should have read the foums that way you can get some info to convince you that SENDO X by itself is a problem. Sell it to another brazilian who you may never meet again. Sendo X is not a phone, it is a stress bomb ready to consume your optimist views, and encourages pessimistist values. WATCH OUT!

There is definately a problem, 8 hours is terrible! Are you saying there is a visible LED behind the IR window 😮? On mine there definately isn't. There should be one IR LED and one IR Reciever behind there, neither of which can be seen by the human eye! I suggest you re-try flashing the firmware and if you still have problem then try and send it to a Sendo Service Center...

PS. Blahblahbber that is not a very helpful post.

blahblahbber is really annoying me now! he has commented lots of times that he doesn't like the Sendo X on all threads, but never offers any constructive advice/info. Personally i hope the moderators ban him!

I did already a new FW update after I realized this batterie problem. Can it cause any headache to try one of the other offered FW's only to see if the phone comes back with this lightening LED afterwards? If it wouldn't be the case, at least I would know it was caused by a faulty FW. BTW, I loaded 1.98 Expansys Distribution. It is recommended to update only with a fully charged batterie, at least the second time my batterie was not completely charged but connected to the charger.
I think they mention this only to avoid a switching off phone during the update?
Something else: It is also mentioned all datas would be erased when updating. This was definately not the case when I did the update. All contacts etc. were still available, but the phone reported to run on 1.98 afterwards. Was this ok?

He certainly should be banned. This is the fourth thread in which he's posted some completely useless drivel today!

Nobody out there who is using the same FW? Does nobody know if there is any risk to try (temporarily) another FW?
Nobody with experience concerning a fully (or not) charged phone while updating? What about my update, was is right that all my contacts and settings were still the same after updating, even when the manual says everything would be deleted?
blahblahbber, maybe you are right, when saying the phone is not so great (which actually doesn't fix my problem). Bought at the same time a Nokia 6600 for my wife (we used before both a 3650), I wanted to try something else. To be honest, there are several items I like better on the Nokia (Joystick, memory, newer OS), but there are nice details coming with the Sendo too. There is only one problem. I can't use it, because it obviously broke after using 5 days (or after loading a faulty firmware?). :frown:

Best is to try go back to the old FW release you had and see if the problem still occurs, if it does you'd better go back to the Shop or a Sendo Service Center.
As for your contacts and settings not being deleted when upgrading FW, yes that is right, I've upgraded my FW every time a new one came out and all my contacts + settings were still there. (but isn't that a good htings? :P )

As for comparing the 6600 and the X, I prefer the X, even though I'm not entirely satisfied with the phone. I had a problem with my mic but since I fixed that it's good now. Not many complaints about the phone anymore beside the dropping of Network Connection.

Hmm, where do I get my old FW. Is it available on Sendos site, did it come on CD? I even dont know which version was running before, since I did the update some days after I received the phone.
In case there is no older version anymore available, does anybody know if I could load any other supplied by Sendo?
I have to figure out if there is a service center in Brazil. If so, probably they dont accept my phone since this model was never sold here :frown:
Turns out it was not a great deal, because the shipping costs from UK to here and now back (if necessary) are not cheap. For that price I probably could have bought something more reliable (Nokia? 😃 )

I will asume you had the right SPN matching the Expansys Distribution FW.
Sadly there aren't any older FW versions for Expansys for download so your best bet is to mail Sendo Support and ask if they have a solution/older FW

And as for another version FW of any other supplier, I think they did it with the French ones? But it's a risk to do so. Wouldn't recomment it unless you are very sure.

cwoern wrote:Does nobody know if there is any risk to try (temporarily) another FW?

You can try, no harm will be done but Sendo have blocked most of them from doing this. It will just say update failed! But there are some, for example I had a French one and used the Portuguese (I think) upgrade as it came out sooner... and it worked fine 😊

I will check that. Meanwhile I wrote to Sendo in England asking the same questions. On top I wanted to know which procedure has to follow if there is a physical problem. Called already the service center in Sao Paulo. But they dont feel responsible since the phone was sold abroad and is not available here. Beside from the obviously poor quality the customer care is better? Anybody already contacted them? How long does it take usually until they answer?
BTW, this small lightening and clear visible LED behind the IR window, is it on when you guys activate your IR, or is it never visible to see?

Christian

well guys. as you can probably see, i've banned blahblahbber. in the interest of fairness i have only given him a 7 day ban in the hope that he will learn his lesson.

thank you to any user who notified the admins/mods. please be sure that we appreciate your help.

Hi guys! Happy EASTER, or holidays!!

.

Probably I suggest a stupid thing but... why don't you try to format the X? Start it with the "5" key pressed down and press ok on the alert. I know that it's a suggested procedure from sendo when you reflash the phone. :hmmmm:

PS. can you send us a photo of your "always red" IR?

I did that already, I tried another FW (BTW, some I could load, others I couldnt). Seems to be a hardware problem. The guys from Sendo decided not to answer my mail
I am really disappointed with the phone and the service. I will post a pic with that LED soon.

Hi Christian,

There is no standard type LED behind the IR window. As someone else pointed out, there is a transmit and receive points, neither of which can be seen (other than with a Sony Camcorder in nightvision mode - quite cool to watch..).

One thing that causes IR a problem, is direct sunlight, but it would only be an issue if you turned IR on - as it is not on permenantly.

You can try an old firmware, and then put back a new one, without issues. Just backup your data first (to a memory card), then restore it back when it seems OK.

The main thing about batteries is that they are "conditioned" first by fully charging it, then discharging it. You could try this first. Also batteries are affected by heat and cold. I go to Finland in Wintertime, and when outside (in -25/-30) it SEVERELY affects the battery. As you are in Brazil (I am jealous!), maybe the heat has that affect too? I know some of our guys got to Brazil / Mexico quite often however, and I do not remember any of them complaining about this problem.

Was this phone a new one, or second hand? If not new, maybe the previous owner had some issues with it (dropped / damaged it?)

Regards,

Kevin (from Sendo)

Hi Kevin,

I assumed there is no "standard LED" behind the window, what for? So it seems it's the IR which is lightening so strong?
Next issue, where do I get a matching old FW?
Backup: One thing really pi.. me off! Using a memory card in my old Nokia 3650 allowed me to read it in any card reader, the card formated in the Sendo is not readable anymore in any card reader :frown:
I bought the phone brand new, this small bastard did well for one week working in Rio. None of my former Nokias ever complained to be in Rio 😃 . Caused by loading the new firmware (or at least appearing at the same time) the "LED" came up?! Probably no wonder the battery lasts only for such a short time.
Took some pics, it is kind of tricky since the red shining "LED" turns out to blue when photgraphing it with a Digi Cam, but you can get an idea, how strong it lights.
Sendo service: Tried to contact them threw their website, describing my problem, no answer :frown:
Really, I like to check out other stuff, but did this mistake already when buying once a Philips cellular, a Sagem and now Sendo. All 3 are/were nice toys when working. In future I will stay with Nokia for sure.

Try to format the card with FAT16 on your pc.

It's certainly intriguing. Infra-Red, by its very nature is invisible to the human eye, being beyond the low-end of the visible light spectrum. My guess would be that the IR port on your phone has shorted out or something similar, rather than a software fault.

Yeh it's got to be a hardware problem really!

I don't believe it. After I figured out where and how to send the phone back to the UK it "slept" in the shelf, waiting for its big trip to Europe 🙄
I wanted to show a friend of mine the problem, switched it on after 2 weeks not touching. What do I have to tell you? It is working like new, the "LED" or IR port is not lightening anymore, nothing. The phone was never exposed to very hot, cold or wet environment, it was stored just in the same way I leave usually the phone.
It is a mystery what happened. Anyway, like this I don't need to send it back. They will tell me there is no problem.
I feel it will end up like following: Just a day after the warranty expires the phone will show again this behavior.
I think I will use it now for a while and will update my contract in August for something more reliable. 😃
Anybody else who found out that the SendoX has coming and going problems without any obvious reason?

Christian

You could always update it for the X2. As for your memory card problem, I've added a post on the FAQ section, as this one seems to be cropping up a lot.

This subject with the memory card is strange. I will try it again, but neither ny build-in card reader of the laptop nor an USB reader was able to read the card, after it was formatted by the Sendo phone.
Ganymed: Once it was formatted FAT16, this problem should be fixed for the future?
Will try it again these days. About the SendoX2. When I contacted Sendo to find out if I could drop the phone in a service center in Sao Paulo, I also wanted to know if it is possible to return it to do an update to Sendos X2, I was told this is not possible. (Of course, buying another one is a solution, but to be honest, I don't want to take this risk anymore. As mentioned, I like the phone when it is working, but the next (paid one) will be a Nokia again)

Bye Christian

Since I updated to the newest FW I also have a red light behind my IR window. The battery life is terrible.

Not sure what to do. Also since updating I have the copy new contacts from SIM message a lot. Why is that?

I have now opened the phone and it seems the bottom IR bulb (presumably the transmit one) is permanently lit. I have tried flashing with various versions and variants and formatting the phone.

Its still there! Anyone else got any ideas? The thing is this bulb is on from the start - even in software update mode it is on...
