Yes you can but not with an official update (it won't let you). There is a trick though using a hex editor.
The only way without firmware modifications is with winswup updates. They are the same updates used in Service Centers. Do not ask me where you can find them, just make a google search.
There are no hardware differences between the Normal and the Limited editions other than the cases. The only differences you'll notice is in the software. The limited editions have different bootup screens, default wallpaper, a couple of ringtones more, and in the McLaren edition an application with links to web sites, interviews,etc.
The Limited editions also come with a 32MB MMC card which includes photos, videos, etc.
