Hi People,
After waiting 4 weeks for my Nokia 6680 upgrade (yes 4 weeks - God bless Orange!) it finally arrived this morning. First impressions are good, a very well put together phone. However I have a few questions to ask you guys........
Being on Orange means having to put up with their software, which in this case does hamper the phones usefulness. The thing I love about Nokia is that you can pick up any handset and start using it without having to read the instruction manual. However the Orange software makes simple tasks, such as accessing messages, accessing the phone book, calendars, alarms etc etc more difficult. These tasks are much simpler on my old 6230. Maybe I just need to have more time with the phone.
Anyway the questions............
1. I have read some Orange customers have had their phones 'flashed' back to factory settings thus removing the Orange software. I have contacted my local Orange shop and asked about this but they have never heard of it! - real helpful bunch. Can this be done, if so what are the disadvantages of doing this? which applications will stop working if any?
2. If i have to live with the Orange software can I customise it? There is a list of icons running down the left hand side of the screen, can further shortcuts be added to this? i.e. calculator, alarm etc.
3. In standby mode the left and right selection keys of access the 'camera' and 'Home' options respectively. Can these be changed so I can assign different shortcuts to them? It does say in the manual you can but it doesnt say how to!, Visited the Orange shop to ask them about this and they have no idea how to do it, they rang technical help and they said it is possible I just need to access the config. icon in the menu screen, trouble is i have no config icon! Grrrrr
Anyway Rant over, any advice would be much appreciated. Oh and where are the games?
Have you tried from the main menu, tools, settings, phone and then standby mode?
Tab down to right & left navigation key settings
nice one flange......... Thats allowed me to change the left and right selection keys. It does also say that i can assign different shortcuts to the nav key, left is assinged for a new msg, right calendar, down contacts etc, standard nokia stuff, but when im in standby mode and press the nav keys for the shortcut i want nothin happens, it has been overwritten with the Orange software, up and down of the nav keys accesses the crappy orange software while left and right of the nav keys dont do anything, what a waste! looks like there is no way round this unless u have anymore bright ideas? Well thanks for the tip on changing the selection keys, thats worked and made a big difference! cheers......... Are you on orange by any chance?
No sorry, I'm on 3. I'm sure there are a few bright sparks on here that can help you override the Orange software....good luck !
I have assigned the left selection key as a shortcut to 'GO TO'. Within my 'GO TO' folder i have the options inbox, notes and calendar as standard. How do i add the calculator and clock options to my 'GO TO' folder? The help screen says there should be an option to add shortcuts to 'GO TO' but ive followed the instruction, and again no luck, someone please help!.......
thanks again!
You can use APPMAN to create favorites (i.e. will appear on GO TO screen) for practically any application or game on the phone.
got into APPMAN, no options to create, can u shed some light on this please?
Thanks
Sorry meshk, I meant to say use Stacker to add favorites. I'm using v3.0 even though the website indicates it's not compatible with 6680 yet.
I'm not to sure what you mean by the 'orange software' the only thing I have noticed to be any differant from my orange network 6630 to my mates '3' network 6680 is the default screensaver (3 has none, orange has a rubbish waterfall or something which I turn off) and also the default themes (wallpaper etc) other than these I can't say I have noticed anything else which differs between the two network handsets.
Is there any specific feature which you know is installed by orange that I have possibly overlooked?
Try to go to an nokia shop not authorized with any operator. Then ask them to flash your phone for you.

bjarke is right. if you take your phone to your local nokia service centre you should be able to have the phone re-flashed as long as the phone is still within it's warranty period.
just ask the engineer to re-flash it with a "generic" firmware. some engineers may be a little cautious about using the generic firmware (as it breaks nokia's agreement with the providers) but that's when you have to turn on the charm.
to find out where your local nokia service centre is go to the appropriate nokia site for your country, then click on support, phones support, customer service.

The 6630 doesn't have the software, on the 6680 the active standby screen is disabled and replaced with oranges's own software.
