iDesk 1.22 released

14 replies · 4,886 views · Started 21 July 2005

iDesk is a small but extremely powerful application that allows you to organize all your files, folders and URLs in an easy folder structure for quick access.
iDesk also provides customizable hotkeys for every internal function, application, file or folder, and contains a built-in task manager and password manager, making it the ideal all round tool to get the most out of your Communicator.

New in version 1.22:
- iDesk can now use the entire Communicator screen. You can optionally switch off the title bar, header, command button area and the status bar to allow room for up to 35 buttons.
- Hotkeys!!! Every internal action and every button now has an optional hotkey (press Ctrl+H to set hotkeys for individual buttons and Ctrl+Shift+H to set hotkeys for all iDesk's internal functions). Hotkeys also work when iDesk is in the background of course.
- Quickly select any action by pressing the first character of the application name (for example, press "C" to start Control Panel). If this is the only button that has this starting character, the attached action is immediately launched. If there are more buttons that have the same starting character, pressing that character repeatedly cycles through these buttons.
- Improved password management (categories, templates (press Ctrl-T to edit templates), ability to edit all fields and full text search). The password dialog will now also automatically close if you open your Communicator, to prevent prying eyes to see your confidential data.
- iDesk now has an improved installation and deinstallation. During uninstall you are prompted which files created by iDesk should also be removed. Please read the file install.txt for installation instructions.
- iDesk will automatically detect configuration files from a previous installation if you install the new version on a different drive than an earlier version and will prompt you if these files should be used or discarded.
- Localization. All iDesk's strings are moved to a resource file to make it possible to create different language versions. Right now iDesk is available in English, Dutch and German.
- The amount of available memory is now shown in the header line next to the available disk space for each drive.
- Numerous other small improvements and bugfixes.

iDesk 1.22 is FREEWARE and can be download from http://opldev.broeze.com

Update:
The initial released version contains a small bugs that prevents you from switching back to the main folder. This has been fixed and an update is already uploaded the the website.

If you already downloaded iDesk 1.22, please redownload it. The filename of the updated version is "idesk_s80_v1.22a.zip".

My aplogies for the inconvenience caused.

iDesk is great applications, but I have problems with assigning an url address as shortcut.
I Always get "error launching URL, the specified URL cannot be opened, Pls check if the name is correct" when I try to start web page from i Desk
Pls, advise.
10x.

Hi Miro

Can you post some more information, like the exact string of the URL you entered? I just tried it on my own Communicator and it works as expected with the latest version.

Best regards
Arjen

When I tried to install the fixed V1.22a (over the previous 1.22) , I got: unknown error, problem with removing iDesk. I ignored it and the instalatioon was made
Any ideas?

This last error is a problem with the OPL runtime. But, you shouldn't install the new version over the old one. This will lead to problems. Please read the file "INSTALL.TXT" for installation instructions and the reason why the old version needs to be uninstalled first.

I don't have any problems with the URL launching. What device are you using and which firmware? And, can you please send me the file "MAIN" from the \System\Apps\iDesk\Data folder (assuming it is in Main that you tried this URL button)? Maybe I can figure out what's wrong if I try your settings on my device. You can send it arjen at allaboutsymbian dot com

I uninstalled the old version and got the same error.
When I try to assign as shortcut a folder there is no browsing option, so to choose folder, only new option, is it normal?

Yey! :icon14: After roman quit, i didnt think we'd see this again.

Are you taking feature requests?

Great work, Arjen & Roman! - Btw, Roman seems to be back now. 😊

I am really missing more customization options though... Like setting a wallpaper, changing buttons/option to remove buttons/changing colour of buttons (not just the highlighted button), changing application icons etc.

@Milo: I'll look into it and give you feedback tomorrow.
@Raven:
Thanks for the suggestions. One thing: I don't understand what you mean that you're only able to change the highlighted button. You can change the look of all the buttons (normal ones and selected one). Setting a wallpaper is a good idea for the next version.
What do you mean with removing buttons? It is possible to delete a button's content by pressing the Delete button. The empty button will always be shown, but that's just the way the program is designed (we didn't want to duplicate Desk).
Changing applications icons and captions is also a good idea for the next version. I'll see what I can do.

Where? I can only change the highlighted button and the highlighted button's text colour. The reason I want to change the blue buttons appearance is because I use my own custom made skin which doesn't go well with the blue buttons...

Yes, I meant that I would like an option for the buttons not to be shown. As of now I still prefer the look and feel and extra functionality of PowerDesk, but iDesk is coming along nicely! And we all like and appreciate freeware/donationware. 😊 You've done some really great work, and I hope you will continue to work on it.

@Raven: Select "Settings" from the Tools menu, then select "Button setttings".
In the Button preferences dialog you can specify the number of buttons, but also the font and fontstyle for unselected buttons and selected buttons. To specify the color of Unselected buttons, press the second CBA-key (Unsel.color), to specify the color the Highlighted buttons press the third CBA-key (Select.color). If you don't have these options, then you probably don't have the latest version.

I will continue to work on iDesk although it was never meant as a replacement of PowerDesk. Thanks for the suggestions ans I'll think about implementing them in the next release.

Cheers, Arjen

If i may be so bold as to suggest some as well?

1. Password import/export to csv?

2. Hotkeys & Warm?keys
The hotkey stuff is cool, but 'warm key' would be a short cut key that only worked in iDesk. so i could for example press chr+shift+i and then d for my dictionary. or just d if i was in powerdesk.
It would be even nicer if the letter was underlined in the application description, like menu shortcuts in windows.
Even better would be if these keys were per iDesk folder, so i could quickly open a document that i had assigned a warmkey path to. so for example iDesk path:
'Project folder->design Widgets->Widget Spec'
could be accessed by pressing p w s

3. To be able to open actual filesystem folders in file-manager, as you do applications. So if i have a directory on my mmc full of misc stuff and reference material for a project, i can create a link to the directory, rather than directly to any/all of the documents.

4. To be able to create new 'Documents' in target directories. This could be a 'note taker' implementation. what i mean is, say i have a physical folder 'mad ideas', that i could make a 'create new document in:' item on the desktop, and point it to my 'mad ideas' directory. Any time i select that option, it would then open a blank document in that directory. Simple way of keeping all of your notes on a subject in one directory in one easy setup.
- This could be doable by extending the 'filemanager open', and sending the key events for 'file->new document->Document' to the filemanager?

Anyhoo, keep up the good work! and if you need any more beta testers, drop me a PM.
