A week ago we were introduced to Nokia's N-Gage first foray into the mobile-gaming industry, This week, it's SonyEricsson's turn to announce a dodgy looking games machine/phone hybrid.
It's code named "Red Jade" but don't be too upset by thename, it has a 64-bit CPU which sends images to the 65,000 colour screen, hile a standalone DSP produces hi-fi sound.
Unlike the N-gage, the Red Jade doesn't need memory cards to run games, this device connects directly to a SonyEricsson WAP portal where it downloads the latest games for a fee.
The Red Jade will be priced just above a Gameboy Advance at launch and uses standard Ericsson accessories to cut the end user's costs to a bare minimum.
Doesn't look like it runs on Symbian but i'd love to be proved wrong. In fact, I can't even see where you type in the phone numbers. Having said that, with 3D games on the go, who's gonna have time to call anyone?
Knowing SE, I'd probably think it's touch sceen.
Very impressive though the Picture looks like they knocked it together in about a week! (Since the launch of the N-Gage)
Hmmmm.... yeah. I can't imagine THAT being on sale in shops.
I wouldn't buy one if it was thrown at me by a SonyEricsson Rep, or even given to me nicely but i must admit that multiplayer games overbluetooth sounds excellent. I can see a gameboy advance bluetooth adaptor around the corner if these things take off upon launch; March 2003
Depending upon pricing and the way they market it, I think they will be a huge sucess.
Also as they aren't cartridge based, also will depend on how fast software companys can come up with good games for them.
Have to admit though, I want one :P
N-Gage i'd buy for SMS & Games (I like the keypad's placement) but the SE one... not with a bargepole. :P
I dunno if that is a dummy in the picture, but the graphics look like a PS2, but on a really small screen....Quite impressive you've got to admit.
I wonder how much these "Games Console/Phone/PDA/Kichen Sink is going to weigh :-?
Yeah, the graphics were the first thing I noticed too. Very tasty. (My "I can't stop saying it" word of the week)
While i've got your attention, there's a new version of Active Desk; v1.5
I think you'd need to upgrade if you were running v4.00 firmware. Just thought i'd tell you incase u fancy putting on the news page?
So if your running firmware V4 or above you need to upgrade to V1.5 of Active desk?

WOW! It's more than a simple update for V4.00
It allows you to download new themes and it finally has a clock, profile & battery bar. You can pressthe joystick right to go to contacts too. It's also a full replacment for the standby screen. I'm very impressed!
As good as the new active desk is, I have reason to believe that my much advertised 'today' screen will be a reality within a couple of weeks thanks to a really friendly bunch of developers...

yes i heard that too that the device has been canceled by SE due to cost thingy but after Nokia announced the N-Gage. SE opens the research again for the Red Jade
btw anyone notice that the device looks like the Neo Geo pocket colour n the wonderswan colour ???
I cant believe that is a phone as well as a gaming machine, how would you hold that refrigerator-sized gadget while calling..... What site is that pic from?
