N70 & Bluetooth GPS conncetion dropping

This thread included a poll: Which GPS Reciever do you use with Tom Tom, do you get any dropping connection issues

HI,

For me I just really like the tomtom software and really want to get it working the way it use to on my old handset.

Its strange the new phone you received is the same firmware as mine and i have the problem sometimes it just looses the gps all the time in less than 10 minutes.

I might just get my headset changes and see what happens. I dont think there is an issue between the ebay software etc as like you said it worked perfectly on an older handset, same as mine did on the 7610, I really just think its a fault with the N70 that needs to be sorted.

Its interesting that tomtom have now released a new version and state support for the N90 but not the N70.

If there is no solution soon then i will have no option to go back to a 7610 which works great with tomtom just ugly and not the features of the N70

Just adding my 2 cents:

I use a Rikaline 6033 GPS and experience exactly the same problems. My N70 is V2.0536.0.2.

The GPS works fine with my laptop and never disconnects when tracking in multimap.

I know this isn't much use but at least it proves its not specific to the BT77.

Anyone had any luck yet? Is the TomTom update any good?

Dear Mr Scott,

Our team is testing the Nokia N 70 but for now we cant say if it will be compatible or not.
If the Nokia will be compatible it will be on our web site.

With best regards,

The TomTom Customer Support Team

I have been following this TomTom & N70 issue and have been carrying out my own tests, which I will go into detail on now to try and draw up some conclusion as to who the fault really lies with..

I will start by listing my firmware and driver versions etc:

My N70 is unbranded Firmware V.20.0536.0.2

12-09-05

RM84

Bluetooth Receiver BT77

TomTom APP Version - 5.2 (Also tested with 5.0)

GPS Driver - 1.20

I have experienced all the same problems as everyone else, frequent connection lose between 5-10 minutes which requires a reboot of the phone before connection is established again!

I have tried all previous suggestions such as offline mode, delete pairings from the bluetooth list etc but none of those have fixed the problem.

Here is what I have found:

Connection is maintained if you are not actually travelling in the car. I tested this by leaving my receiver on the window ledge over night. When I woke up next day it was still connected.

However, if you plan a route (I did my 36 mile commute to work) and set it running as Show Route Demo, it crashes whilst running the demo, the connection is lost but then the demo continues. This happened time and time again with varying lengths of time, sometimes 10 minutes others 2 minutes!

So next test was to see if the demo would run crash free when the bluetooth receiver was not switched on. Again I set this up over night with the demo repeating. Woke up next day and the demo was still going, crash free.

At this stage I was now thinking that there is a definite fault with the N70 bluetooth, and set out to try and get my phone updated with the latest firmware from Nokia V3.0546.2.3

Unfortunately I have been unable to get this done anywhere local to me over the past few days as the engineer from the carphone warehouse service centre is away until after Christmas.

So in the meantime I have been trying various other tests, and one which I think (repeat think) has been successful is if you turn off the map display. It is on page 1 of the preferences menu. So far I have not lost a connection this way whilst the phone has been running the demo. I will confirm this by leaving the receiver on my window ledge over night and setting the demo running.. If when I wake up tomorrow morning the connection is still established and the demo still running, then I think this is the solution. I know its nice to have the colourful map display but for now, as a temporary solution lets hope it works so you can still actually navigate!

Im still none the wiser of who is at fault, but one thing I noticed while looking through the TTMOBILE.APP code from my old version 5.0 was this:

W h e n u s i n g t h e p h o n e , t h e m e m o r y c a n b e c o m e f r a g m e n t e d ( t h e a m o u n t o f f r e e m e m o r y d e c r e a s e s ) . T o s o l v e t h i s , t r y r e b o o t i n g y o u r p h o n e .

It is almost as though the N70 is allocating all its memory to the map display as it re-draws it when your moving? I would appreciate it if people having the same trouble could try out my suggestion and report back.

I could be totally wrong, but hopefully this will be sorted soon.. I miss my 6680 :frown: lol

Hi,

I contacted TomTom Support and after a few days researching my questions, they made the following official response:-

Response 22/12/2005 01.53 PM
Dear Mr Scott,

If ordering the Mobile software it will come with the 5.20 software installed so you should have no problem installing it. Please make sure that you N70 has the latest firmware installed as it is required.

We have tested a N70 here with the MK-II GPS and we have had no connection problems with it.

With best regards,

The TomTom Customer Support Team

In other words TomTom.COM state you need the latest N70 firmware and TT5.20 to be fully supported. When you have this combination of hardware, they claim they cannot reproduce any faults.

I am willing to bet that TomTom's testing comprised of an engineer sitting at his desk with a GPS receiver sitting on the window, with TT5.20 running all day STATIONARY.

Several people, including myself have noted in the past (when I owned a GPS receiver) that if you don't move, then TT doesn't lose GPS signal or crash!

Dez

Dez,

So what's the verdict? Is TomTom working fine for you now with the new Firmware?

I'm working on another GPS Navigation software (CoPilot) and we are experiencing the same problems with the Nokia N70. We were told that the new firmware would fix the GPS Connectivity dropping problem but we can still reproduce this problem with the new firmware.

Any feedback will be very helpful

Thanks,
Bobskins

Let me tell you the story of two n70 phones. One was on O2 the other vodafone. Both phones were running v2.05 software and both has the same probelm lose connection after 20-40 mins to the GPS bluetooth device.

The O2 was taken to a place where the firmware was upgraded to v3.05 and no longer suffers the probelm. However, as vodafone have 'not approved' this software I cannot get anyone to upgrade it. I'm told that the only version apporved by vodafone is v2.05 ( and thats a qoute direct from vodafone)

Summary - upgrading to v3.05 solved the probelm. I hope that someone at vodafone get a move on and approves the latest sofware .. I think V5 is out next week and vodafone still only approve v2!!!

If anyone has found anyway of getting their vodafone upgrade I would like to hear from you

Bill

Reply from the Netherlands.

At first Vodafone did not want to upgrade to firmware v3.
I made it clear to them that I bought a phone that according to Nokia is not working as it should with fw v2.
I left the N70 at a Vodafone shop and had it back within a week with the generic fw v3 from Nokia. The guy in the shop send it in with the complaint reading: Bluetooth problems, upgrade to fw3 to solve problem.

I'm hoping to have it upgraded to fw v5 next week, as it must be possible now at any Nokia service center.

Btw, the phone is still simlocked, at first I thougt this was Vodafone's objection to inserting a generic fw. I did have to call support to enter some network details to be able to use mail on the phone.

Insist on having the phone "fixed"as this is possible!

So what's the verdict? Is TomTom working fine for you now with the new Firmware?

I just received my N70 back from FonFunShop today after a FW upgrade to Generic (Unbranded) v 5.0609.2.0.1 01-03-06 RM-84 so have not had time to test it with TomTom GPS. Will do so over Easter weekend.

My experiences with the various N70 Firmwares since November 2005 are as follows:-

V2.xx (O2 & T-Mobile)
1. Reboot phone before trying to use Tomtom
2. Disable all POIs and only allow Warn On Route for Speed Cams
3. TomTom reliable for at least 1 hour.
4. HOWEVER... if the N70 goes out of range of the GPS receiver (e.g. paying for petrol) or if you disconnect your BT headset, the GPS signal is lost and will not return until a reboot.
5. Need to reboot phone after closing TomTom app or PC Suite may not work via Bluetooth

V3.xx (O2)
1. Reboot phone before trying to use Tomtom
2. Disable all POIs and only allow Warn On Route for Speed Cams
3. TomTom reliable until battery goes flat in GPS Receiver or N70.
4. GPS connection automatically restored if N70 goes out of range of the GPS receiver (e.g. paying for petrol) and you then return to car in a few minutes.
5. Reliably make and receive voice calls via BlueTooth headset whilst using TomTom.
5. Need to reboot phone after closing TomTom app or PC Suite may not work via Bluetooth

V5.xx (Generic / De-Branded)
Unknown - will test this weekend.

Dez

I got the phone with v 5.0609.2.0.1 01-03-0 and a RoyalTek GPS adapter.

The problem is still there. Works sometimes for more than an hour, sometimes drops after 5 min. ????

ANY news on this

Im running latest version of TOMTOM

:frown:

i bought a n70 on a 18month contract specifically to be able to have sat nav if i need

this is before i knew of any problems i was relying on people telling me it worked well etc on their phones

admittedly im not running a legit version but 1 i got off the internet my firmware is as follows

v 2.0537.1.7
18-09-05
rm-84

using this gps receiver

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8801382096&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

i have had other problems also i tried to send my gf sister a picture via bluetooth and it was having non of it it wouldnt send at all untill i rebooted the mobile and started a fresh

i contacted nokia on this and didnt get a reply fast so i phoned t-mobile up and they are sending me another via courier and the courier is taking this 1 with him

i then get the following email

Dear Mr Welch

Thank you for contacting Nokia Helpline.

With regard to your email concerning a faulty handset, please take the phone to your nearest Nokia Authorised Service Point for repair. They will assess if a repair is required and if this may be covered under the warranty.

Your nearest Nokia Authorised Service Point is as follows:

Name: Blast Communications
Tel: 01623633123

so im going to see what happens when it comes tommorow hopfully it will work as my trial period/cooling off hting has run out so im stuck with it either way

if it doesnt work im going to have to bite the bullet save up a while for a standalone module

any other help off people is appreciated

i've tried offline mode as well went to pay for petrol left the phone in the car next to gps receiver on the dash came back gps signal lost and wouldnt reconnect and forced a restart

EDIT:

also another problem i've found dunno if related is using the data cable that came with the pghone i plug it into pc n phone all good do what im doing all good then..... remove the cable n the usb symbol on the phone stays on and wont connect to pc without a reboot either

Whats make the author of this poll/thread think that the only GPS units available to people are TomTom's proprietary unit and the BT777 ??

I am using the best BT GPS unit available; Holux GPSlim 236 (sirfstar iii, fw.3.11)
with very little loss of connection with my N70 (FW V5.0609.2.0.1) and TomTom Mobile 5.21.

Ive just had my new Nokia LD-3W Bluetooth module arrive this morning, and I will be giving it a test run with my Tomtom 5.20 Mobile.

After much thinking, I decided to get Nokias latest bluetooth GPS unit. It has the latest Sirf III chipset, and is Bluetooth 2.0 EDR compatible, so I guess if this doesnt work perfectly, nothing will! And best of all, it only cost 65, thats 50 cheaper than the older LD-1W.

Firmware - v 2.0539 debranded.

wooooooooooooopppppppeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyyyy

think i've solved it got a new phone this morning from t-mobile firmware version is

v 2.0537.1.7
18-09-05
RM-18

and im using tom tom version 5.000 (419)
gps drive v1.30

and i've removed all pocket gps speed camera and red lgiht camera's etc
because i have a snooper s3 speed cam thing gps so i dont need them n e way

i've completed a 40-50 minute drive from mansfield to hucknall then randomly ignoring it trying to get it lost and crash the system and its worked perfectly with the gps receiver posted earlier

i even turned off the gps receiver 20-30 seconds it came up no gps detected

so i turned it back on went to plan a route and low n behold it found it without asking to pair it etc

i also got phoned and took the call not with bluetooth however as i havent got tht paired yet but it kept working

in general its possible i had a faulty phone as this phone runs so much faster than the last 1 t-mobile sent me but im impressed with it again

although im still not convinced its worth £200 when i can get a stand alone unit for that ammount

thanks for all your help guys n gurls

edit still freezes if you do somthing it doesnt like but the navigation seems fine no drop out yet

think this is due to my bluetooth receiver gps thingy ma bob

when it doesnt connect to satelites it times out and turns off althought a possible solution could be leave the phone in the car if i dart into n e where or put it in glovbox etc

would like to u im using this software for all trips whether i need it or not to test how it is working

and agian so far i havent had a gps signal drop except once while under the celing of a petrol station went to pay for fuel came back gps was active had reconnected

i noticed i do still get the odd white screen but i can live with it and somtimes have to reset phone to be able to send people files via bluetooth

If this has been mentioned before I will apologise now. The fix I have been told is to use the v3 firmware/software for the N70 as this causes no problems according to a guy I met at a computer fair selling tomtom and gps rx units. Obviously this is dependant on your service provider as to wether they have realeased that version. I was running v1 with tomtom 5.0, now 5.2 and it would drop gps and lock the phone requiring a recycle this could happen after 40 miles and then 1 mile, it didnt care how far or long.. I am now running a generic v5 firmware from nokia service with the same tomtom and it does the same but now does no lock the phone up and allows me to just select the gps device in the setup tomtom menu and its off working...... It appears to be a big bluetooth issue as it will do this to my headset but it hasnt decided when. Needless to say the phone is going away again this time to 3 so they can wave their magic wands at it and hopefully put a stable version on there for me.:con? Hope this is of some use and I have not repeated someone elses reply.

Thanks

im using version 2.0537.1.7 firmware

tomtom 5.00 cracked

running a standard voice and no poi.

after receioveing a new phone because t-mobile said it was possibly faulty tomtom works fine

it lost connection once so far and that was going under cover on a petrol station and then reconnect when it found it again

i still do ge tthe odd white screen when tom tom freezes but so far it has not been while navigating just playing with stuff like voices and i scroll through them too fast

another thing i have found is usually have to do a full reset on the phone although this doesnt bother me as when the novelty of having sat nat has worn off ill only use it when i need to and not all the time as a gadget

still not impressed with the near £200 price tag tho :S still not worth it even if they fixed it and it ran 100% perfect

"""and im using tom tom version 5.000 (419)
gps drive v1.30""""

I think - i got latest version of TomTom mobile 5, but why is my software (gps driver) v1.2 ? - App-version 5.200 (443).
Why is my gps driver 1.2 and not 1.3 ?

i dont have a problem i sent my phone back and a working 1 came back :S

i get the occansional white screen but other than that mine seem's to be stable as hell but idont use poi's any more could be somthing to do with that as well

I'm on N70 firmware V5 and TTM5.2 with BT-321 and is fine for me. Delete all pairings, reboot phone, search for device inside TomTom, should connect without asking for codes.

Or, pair it under the normal bluetooth menu and set it to automatically accept connections.

Jon

Got it sorted!..

My Vodafone had v2.05 software on and would drop every 30-40mins. Vodafone would not upgrade the software as they have 'no tested it on their network'.

Anyway - got phone reflashed as a generic phone with v5. I deleted all blutetooth pairings and turned off PIO within tom tom. I repaired the phone to the GPS and saved the autehntiaction.

And - this has fixed the probelm. I have been using the phone for over a week and fre serveral hours a day and I have not once had the probelm.

rich_slay wrote:Here's a good problem for you. Got tom tom mobile on the n70 which seems to work fine when not connected to GPS, i.e. browsing maps etc.

If i turn the phone on hook up the bluetooth gps receiver ( a generic one not a tom tom one) tom tom does for a while work fine, then after x amount of minutes, guess a number between 5 and 60, usually when i'm cruising down the motorwayand not really needing it, it looses the connection to the GPS reciever. If i exit tom tom and go back in no joy, if i turn off the device and turn it back on no joy. The only ways i have found to get it back are to turn the bluetooth on the phone off then on and to reboot the phone. This is the only thing connected to the phone via bluetooth.

Has anyone else come across this problem? The gps i can send back but i wonder if it's a software problem and not actually a hardware problem at all??

Any hints/advice would be very greatfully recieved otherwise soon both gps and phone will be departing the car via the window at high speed.

Cheers

Rich

I have the same problem! I have tried two different GPS receivers, one from Holox BT5471 and another BT501, both exhibit similar problems.

I use TT mobile 5 version 5.000.419 which I think ite latest Mobile 5 version, When you try to install a GPS device TT asks you to pair it with your phone first. Doing this, I find that after between 5 and 25 minutes, the screen will freeze up TT mobile stops working and I have to re-start the phone, delete all bluetooth pairings and start all over again.

I have been advised by two people who sell GPS receivers, to set my N70 so its bluetooh is hidden, delete all previous bluetooth parings, turn off the phone, then turn it on again, then go into TT mobile, go to settings, GPS status and manually add my receiver (having first turned it on of course). This you can do, and TT mobile will find it and set it up even though bluetooth is hidden. Funnily enough on my phone it doesn't ask for the bluetooth receiver passcode for either of the bluetooth GPS receivers I now have?? TT mobile starts working fine, but once again and at random, the screen freezes. Sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes after half an hour or 45 minutes.

I have tried everything to no avail . My firmware version is now at V2.0537.1.7 and this has made no difference. Also, I notice if you are stood still for more than five or six minutes and the N70 decides to go into active standby mode, TT mobile will stop working and the whole thing is buggered up again. ( A Friend of mine has an N70 that goes to sleep so soundly that he misses calls and texts and can only make calss after this happens by re-starting his phone!)

I have talked to Nokia who are not remotely interested. TomTom say they don't list the N70 as a compatible device and leave it at that!!!

I think I am going to solve this problem by buying a second-hand Nokia 6630 or 6680 s both of these work fine with TomTom - or maybe a PDA, as for the N70 - the thing is not worth the money it cost.

Anyone have any ideas??

TomTom say they don't list the N70 as a compatible device and leave it at that!!!
