What we all want in the next 9K series?

61 replies · 6,464 views · Started 19 November 2002

I made this because it is time to think over this winter about our next 9k device.

So I will start by droping from time to time here, what I wish for my next 9K.

Thiner
Smaller
Longer Battery
USB Connection
Better Data Suite
..

Please feel free to post here. 10X

OPL runtime in the ROM

Screen up to 640x240/

No alteration in physical size - any smaller and the keyboard is going to be compromised, although narrower wouldn;t go too much amiss.

USB connectivity via mPPP a la 7650 - ditch the rebadged PsiWin effort.

Bluetooth

Deent amount of on board memory. Minimum of 32mb, 64mb preferrable.

SA-1100 to run at least 135mhz, 206mhz preferred.

MMS

more stability & less main firmware software crashes...
possibility of download some firmware software updates on the main Mr & Mrs Nokia site...
USB of course...

BUT BUT BUT !!!!! = Finally a decent & respectfull customer service with no lies, delays, or even loosing the phone, from Mr & Mrs Nokia and their kids (=subdealers) to all of us who spent a lot of money buying for this wonderfull phone / tool / laptop / console.

MUST HAVE:

USB
More RAM
640x240 screen

NICE To HAVE:

Bluetooth
GPRS
Replacable Facias (might remove some of the "ugly brick" comments)
Tri-Band
SD Card instead of MMC only
Ethernet Docking Port

No more firmware!!! Or something small just to format and boot ... Like the bios of a normal pc + install connectivity ...

Then we can create our own operating sysmtem or totaly redesign the normal one 😊

GPRS
Bluetooth
64+ Mb built in memory
more RAM
SMALLER...!
built in Camera
built in GPS
Touch screen outside.. when openning it becomes LCD with a keyboard 8)
Stereo speeker
3D accelerator ( too much )
USB cable
and bigger screen.

That's it.. hope Nokia will see this post before announcing about a new 9K !!!

i'll be waiting that mobile

when will nokia annouced the new communicator series

i can;t wait to buy one

Must Have

62+ MB memory
640X240 Screen
USB
Bluetooth
GPRS
Tri Band

Be nice to Have

Thinner
GPS
Camera
More expansion options

In an Ideal World

Radio
TV Decoder
Teletext (properly, not via web)
Emits enough microwave radiation to make a nice cup of tea 😉

1) Secure authentication for email
2) Vibrate ringer functionality
3) Tri-Band
4) Mute function for speaker phone

I am a simple kinda guy 😉

- Same size (to accommodate keyboard) but thinner
- Reflective screen which works better in sunlight
- Tri-band / GRPS / Bluetooth / 3G!
- USB connection to PC
- Nokia Pop-port
- A Nokia desktop on the PC like a Palm desktop equivalent, to edit contacts and calendar (I think this would be very popular with mass-market mainstream buyers!)
- Faster rated CPU (ideally this could be user customisable with varied settings from, 'Max Battery life' to 'Processor priority' options... from within software and effected after a reboot from software.
- More internal memory so things like File Manager come preinstalled! Basically the whole software is ‘on the machine’ and doesn’t have to be loaded via a PC (Yawn!)
- Ability to format and restore OS, apps and user data, from scratch (on the machine!) ****My 9210 froze the other day and I couldn't do anything – even after taking out and replacing the battery – so I had to format the device (and no File manager to restore my backup on the MMC! ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH! How crap!)*
***
- Opera web browser
- 640x240 screen
- Flash upgradeable OS (like Psion s7) so user upgradeable patches can be issued - though I guess this would probable be discounted as it’s likely to be a nightmare for the support staff. So, then at least, lets have flash upgrades which ‘less technically competent’ support staff can handle, so that there is faster OS updating and more places to get an upgrade and walk-in walk-out speed of service
- Pop-port camera
- MP3 playback / Real Playback in stereo with headphone socket
- RTF capable word processor

with all the "i want's..." around, what only left for me to ask for would be... the price to be reasonable... and also editable profiles from front panel... 😉

Smaller, but with a bigger screen???? Hmmm.. some new Nokia Magic that defies physics? 😉

How about.. (you guys must be wondering "whazz : ) doin here?" but i like 9210s! and would have bought one if it was'nt for that 7650!! 😃)

How about a swivel screen! Like in those laptop-tablet pc's, they have a swivel touchscreen, so you can use it without opening it up, and use a stylus and stuff, and even use it as that way for taking images! (would be pretty cool!)

And as for memory, if it has bluetooth its all solved, we could just pay 400 dollars and get the Toshiba HobBit (but then again, not everyone is gonna pay 400$..)

Regarding the front Panel:

-Screen saver for Front Panel (Or it will not be front Panell?)
-Min. 256 Colors LCD and in double size than the actual (will help see the pictures made with the camera)
- Possibility to ask for the number dialed/answered to be stored in the contacts
- Ability to read the numbers in the SMS and associate them with the contacts directory
-Eliminate Duplicates from the contacts data base
-More features like other standard nokia phones: Calculator, Settings, Profiles, Agenda, Adress Book

My perfect phone

Must have
More RAM
Bigger internal drive ( c: )
Faster CPU
Same size

Almost must have
Ethernet port
GPRS
Vibrating mode

Nice to have
API for using the front screen
API for using the front keyboard for custom applications
More functionality for front keyboard (e.g. ability to enter new contact)

What I would also ideally like to see is a flash type ROM (e.g. netBook) with the tools to build a custom flash image provided in a sdk. This way one can assemble all the "must have" application for yourself and put it in ROM. (Now I'm really dreaming 😃 )

BTW: How about emailing Nokia and informing them about this thread.

BTW: How about emailing Nokia and informing them about this thread.

Great idea! We could get their attention (that's if they didn't finish the design already!)

It was in my intention when I started this Topic. Anyhow, I will put all the "Wish To Have Fetaures" in a post, but we first must post as much as we can for this next Generatin Communicator that is to come.

I wish also a simple built in Recorder for Phone Coversation. The one that 9110 used to have was optimal placed (Front panel and cover also)

It would be awesome to find neat features we posted here come up on a new device!

Could the new communicator be the new "near perfect" device (near perfect cause nobody is perfect!! and my name is nobody :P)

As per my first thread & answer on this topic, I forgot to ad this = Tri-band & GRPS.

Now as per the quote I used on my today's answer, I would like 2 state something here (already mentioned it at several time, but will redo it here...). So...

With over 2600 members on this forum, and with the good amount and average of money we spent to buy our phones, I strongly recomend that one should gather all our main requests & comments and process it towards Mr & Mrs Nokia... As mentioned we are over 2600 members, and growing bigger every day. Its seems after reading most of the threads on ths forum, that we all had some problems about our phones. Therefore, if I was Mr & Mrs Nokia, I would deeply listen to a group of users (buyers / customers) that would express their feelings and suggestions. Thus does not mean that Mr & Mrs Nokia should do everything that we request, but it would finally show that Mr & Mrs Nokia are listening...

So please, lets finally organize something towards Mr & Mrs Nokia!!!

You can count me in on that if it happens, and by the way, with my real name and details, as I am not afraid of expressing my opinions.

After all, this is for the good of all of us, including Mr & Mrs Nokia. No?

Sam

I think we do not count as number of users for Mr. & Mrs. Nokia.

As knowledged users, we should count.

There have been a lot of posts regarding this. I personaly believe that our oppinion will count.

For this reason Keep posting, coz it will matter at the end. }{I hope this end is pretty near}{

In addition to my above post including what should have been included inthe current models, let me push the envelope a little.

I use both a 9290 and a T68. wouldn't it be nice if the next gen communicator had a removable phone that would allow input of contacts and all the other current phone features that when 'snapped' back onto the communicator's keyboard or shell, you have full functionality of the suggestions above.

This could solve my need to have a smaller phone for going out while gieing me the flexibility of not haveing to lug around my laptop.

Well, I guess almost all wants have been mentioned already: May be just to emphasized a few already mentioned:

1. Tri-band. Since a lot of 9k users spend most of their non-sleeping time with the device, it must be made truly mobile.

2. GPRS. Very important since this 9k device has so many functions, I want to be able to surf the net, retrieve email and still able to receive calls. I can't do that with CSD in the current 92xx.

3. Native support for calling card function, like that found on the Sony Ericsson T68i. Our telcos here in Malaysia still charges exorbitant rate for IDD calls. Or if there is already an app written for 92xx, kindly let me know.

4. True multilingual support in the Symbian OS level. Especially like Chinese, Thai, Malay & Indonesian. I know this would mean bigger OS. May be the language support can be implemented in a modular way, allowing users to download what they need from the web. Then Nokia doesn't have to launch 9xxxC... etc.

The 9210i is billed / sold as a "communicator". Musts for next generation are:

1. Triband
2. GPRS
3. Bluetooth
4. Faster processor
5. More RAM

These make it the device it should always have been as well as btringing it up to date with competitors in key areas.

Nice to have:

a) Keyboard upgrade - could Nokia learn something from Psion 5 and Revo?
b) USB link to PC
c) Further RAM expansion
d) PC Suite upgrade to fix XP problems, etc

There was supposed to be a Swedish site that hosted an article but I think the page is gone.

I promise to make an article about this post.

Ok what I want to see on the next 9 series device....

Vital
- T9 text entry on phone side (so I can text people without having to stop walking to use the full keyboard).
- More RAM.
- Faster CPU.
- IRDA to be able to transfer more than 1MB without the PC suite.
- Full IBM style 4Mb/s IRDA transfer rate.
- Stronger hinge 😉.
- Gloss black styling, with backlit keys outside and in.
- No more ariel (I fiddle with it too much and it isn't needed).
- A better bloody sample for ring tones.
- Decent e-mail client.

Nice
- USB.
- Bluetooth.
- stereo headphone socket (for music).
- X-press-on covers 😉.
- Cradle and hardcase with device.
- Colour screen on front to complete the look.
- MMS.
- Tri-band and 3G.

Silly
- Touch-screen and stylus.
- 100 price tag.
- User upgradeable OS.
- Built in GPS.
- Sattellite phone option.
- "Speaker-phone" with out opening device.
- Better quality speaker for music playback.

As Switch said above but i'd like

Linux software aswell as i find my windows useage diminishing and my linux useage increasing 😉
