Is Python a replacement for OPL on Series 60? Is Nokia on the right track by backing it? Is it easy to get started? And can you produce full standalone applications using Python? Steve Litchfield answers these questions and produces an application as concrete proof.

Great article Steve. Too bad I don't own a Series 60 device myself. Python definitely looks like the way to go for RAD on the Series 60 devices.
I also think that it's just a matter of time before someone creates a utility that makes creating standalone applications with python a breeze.
I still definitively love OPL as RAD language for S80, but I would also welcome Python on the Communicator. Do you know if there are plans to make it available for S80 as well?
Well, Forum Nokia, intriguingly, have made the Python for Series 60 forum a sub-forum within 'Python'. So presumably there will be Python for Series 80. And maybe even Series 40 and non-Symbian OS?
Steve
I certainly view Python as the second best option after OPL. Still I sincerely hope that the FEP issue in S60 can be finally done away with and OPL can move on S60 with proper APP....ENDA statements.
I'd also like to spend some time in the near future to look into how Python and OPL can complement each other, e.g. how OPL could leverage on Python functionality to address missing features and vice versa.
