While there isn't any outward indication on the Symbian website, anyone downloading the OPL runtime for their Nokia Communicator will download the first full version (version 1.0) of the runtime. After extensive testing by Symbian (both in-house and by external developers), OPL has been updated and is now badged as version 1.0 Good news indeed. We've got more comments available behind the headline.
OPL version 1.0 is a big step for Symbian, even though it hasn't yet been fully announced over their site (surely this will be coming up in the near future?). Many regular users have been wary so far of installing OPL as it has had a beta / pre-release tag on it. This has now been removed, and having a version 1.0 available should mean more people can install the runtime and be able to run more applications from Hobby Developers.
Applications such as ABP and Clock6 from FreEPOC, RMRBank, RMR Art and more from RMRSoft can now be used with confidence. The slew of hobby developers (like our own Dazler) can now program away, knowing that Symbian has been paying attention to user requests.
It now remains for the community to stand up and show that OPL is somehting that we want to use - All About Symbain is helping with our Tutorials and Developer Competition and FreEPOC have a skeleton Event Core to help you get started.
And if we can get enough applications out there, perhaps Symbian may consider the other OPL request that keeps popping up in the Forums. That of OPL support on the Nokia 7650 (and other Series 60) smartphones....
Good news indeed.
I am happy (even not programmer 😞 ) to hear that.
I will install it ASAP.
You all got to prove that this worth..If you know what I mean.
Good luck!

Euh... A stupid (sheep) question for once...
Should I uninstall the old OPL FIRST or can I just install the new update directly.
Thanks for a smart answer to my (sheep) question.

Not a stupid question at all. You don;t need to unistall the old version, the SIS takes care of that. This is true for asis installation files.
Handy, eh? 😊
Man, yu are quick in your answers !!! Do you actually sleep or just have taken some of those magical mushrooms keeping you awake all the time and logged on the forum ???
XAXAXAXAXAXA
Anyway, thanks for that info, saves me some wondering !!!
And yes indeed, very Handy thing!!!

8) Finally there shall be OPL in my 9210... have been waiting for the NON-BETA for quite sometime already...
Methinks the time is coming to look more and more seriously at using OPL.
Hi there
I got a Nokia 6630 and I've tryed to run opl apps using opl runtime for
Symbian S 60 phones (dowloaded from http://opl-dev.sourceforge.net/) but it is suited for Symbian OS v6.1 and I cannot run any opl app.
(Installation works fine but when I run them they quit as I press any button)
Please, do you have any suggestion about it?
Is there another runtime that makes this apps work properly?
I need to run my old opl programs (written for psion serie 3) on a smartphone, shall I change and use a communicator?
thanks
