I would dispute this. People say Microsoft will always be number 1 because its so dominant, but where is the historical precident for that? The market leader has always lost its position eventualy and I can't see any reason why it will be any different in MS's case.

People and governments are looking very seriously at Open Source alternatives to Microsoft's Office and OS products. There are a few reasons for this probably more than I've listed.

a) The software cost is cheaper. At least after initial training which is probably not as bad as people think it is.

b) They are not tied to one supplier.

c) They can't be held to ransom over upgrade policies.

d) The souce is open hence anyone can see it or modify it for their own use. This also makes it harder to tamper with as its difficult to hide something if everyone can see it.

e) You dont know what is going in in closed source. Can we be sure that an internal team is not inserting its own code for its own (not the companies) purposes? Although I'm sure (well hope) Microsoft has many security procedures to prevent this.
